Soaw-legislative -- SOA Watch Legislative Working Group

About Soaw-legislative
English (USA)

The Legislative Working Group is an on-going working group of SOA Watch. We include representatives of various local SOA groups throughout the country, members of the SOA Watch grassroots council, and the Legislative Coordinator staff person from the DC office. Together we make decisions by consensus about the overall legislative strategy of the movement incorporating feedback and participation from the SOA Watch grassroots council (the decision-making body) as well as from the DC staff who give us logistical and financial support.

Through our monthly conference calls we additionally give updates about our work across the country in various congressional districts. We are always open to new members.

This list will be used to share information, post minutes of meetings, and send out meeting reminders and agendas.
~~~~~
Statement of Purpose drafted at the Legislative Retreat, November 2004:
The LWG member is accessible to and in communication with the
regional/state grassroots structure (or is willing to be). Ideally, there
is at least one representative per region. Communication about legislation
and lobbying efforts should flow both to and from the local groups/regions
and the national structure through this member.
LWG members assist the SOA Watch Legislative Coordinator by: strategizing, visioning and setting agendas for the legislative campaign; helping to execute the legislative pieces of the Vigil and Sprint event; and
facilitating the local level lobbying of targets to win congressional
support.
We do this work through: monthly conference calls, participation in
sub-group work, and attention and responsiveness to emails. Additionally,
LWG members will take an interest in and will pick up tasks associated
with developing new leaders in the region, i.e. training participants and
folks who contact the national office.
This statement was drafted in November 2004 during the LWG retreat in
Georgia. It is a working document meant to clarify the roles and
responsibilities for current LWG members, as well as a tool to recruit
new members.
