Sunday 10th December 3pm
Showing of films about repression and resistance in Mexico. With Edinburgh Chiapas Solidarity Group. Free.

Atenco: Breaking the Siege (2006, subtitled). A graphic documentary on the events in May this year when police violently attacked people near Mexico City. The peasant farmers of Atenco are veterans of struggle, having defeated plans to build a new airport for Mexico City on their lands. Now they are struggling to free prisoners still in jail following the vicious police assault in the spring.

Plus film footage from the continuing struggle in Oaxaca. Since June 2006 a massive social movement in Oaxaca has been taking to the streets to demand the resignation of the violent and corrupt state governor URO. Starting with a teachers' strike, the struggle has grown into a challenge to the power of the political elite.
Grass-roots action has included the building of hundreds of barricades in the streets of Oaxaca City every night, and the occupation of a dozen radio stations, which have then broadcast news of the struggle. But in the last few weeks state repression has increased, and the Federal Police have occupied the city. Dissidents are being rounded up and put in jail. Gunmen, both paramilitaries and on and off-duty policemen, have murdered with impunity. At least 16 activists have been killed in the last few months, including an Indymedia reporter.

This event is part of the Britain-wide week of action in solidarity with the people of Oaxaca, from 10 - 17th December. For more info, including other activity in Edinburgh and Glasgow, contact edinchiapas at yahoo.co.uk

The ACE info shop will be open on Sunday, including the special section with zapatista coffee and handicrafts, and pamphlets and books on the struggle in Chiapas and Latin America.
