[ACE] Film Screenings for May and June

Hi Folks, 
          Heres's the ACE FILM SCREENING PROGRAM 
NB. Our film on May 6th is suitable for children as
well as adults!

We are still open each Tuesday 1-4 for Edinburgh
Claimants sessions on debt,dole and housing hassles
and for the food co-op shop.
And on each Saturday 10 -6 for the food co-op shop and
free internet access.
We have open meetings the first Wednesday of every
month at 7:30pm. All very welcome.

ACE CINEMA

All screenings are at 3pm each Sunday

6th May - The Story of the Weeping Camel dir.
Byambasuren Davaa & Luigi Falorni (2003) 87 mins.
Mongolian. This poignant film merges documentary and
storytelling traditions into a film that commands the
attention of children and adults alike. Set in the
Gobi desert it follows the efforts of nomadic
shepherds to reunite a mother camel with her abandoned
calf.

13th May - – La Haine dir. Mathieu Kassonitz (1995) 96
min. French with English subtitles. A riot has broken
out in a suburban ghetto and the police are trying to
suppress it. The film follows the lives three young
friends for 24 hours and explores racism and the
nature of violence.

20th May – My Childhood (1972) and My Ain Folk (1973)
(the first two films from the Trilogy ) dir. Bill
Douglas. Based on the directors memories of his 
childhood and being raised in poverty in the mining
village of Newcraighall. A poetic depth of realism.

27th May – The Circle dir. Jafar Parachi (2000) 87
mins. Banned in Iran this film follows the lives of
two women released from prison as they traverse the
busy streets of Tehran where their movements are still
restricted.

3rd June  - Andrei Rublev dir. Andrei Tarkovsky (1966)
205 mins (directors cut). Explores the life of a 15th
century Russian icon painter and through his eyes
observes and questions ideas and experiences of
artists at different times in Russian history.

10th June  - Blue dir. Derek Jarman is the last film
of director Derek Jarman (1942-1994). At the time when
he made the film, he was blind and dying of AIDS. It
consists of a single shot of saturated blue colour
filling the screen whilst Jarman describes his life
and vision.
The soundtrack ends with the words:

In time,
No one will remember our work
Our life will pass like the traces of a cloud
And be scattered like
Mist that is chased by the
Rays of the sun
For our time is the passing of a shadow
And our lives will run like
Sparks through the stubble.
I place a delphinium, Blue, upon your grave

17th June –Why We Fight dir. Eugene jarecki (2005)
99mins.The film describes the rise and maintenance of
the United States military-industrial complex while
concentrating on wars led by the United States of the
last fifty years and in particular on the 2003
Invasion of Iraq. It alleges that every decade since
World War II, the American public has been told a lie
to bring it into war to fuel the military-economic
machine, which in turn maintains American dominance in
the world. It includes interviews with John McCain,
Chalmers Johnson, Richard Perle, William Kristol, Gore
Vidal and Joseph Cirincione. The film also
incorporates the stories of a Vietnam War veteran
whose son died in the September 11, 2001 attacks and
then had his son's name written on a bomb dropped on
Iraq, a 23-year old New York man who enlists in the
United States Army citing his financial troubles after
his only family member died, and a former Vietnamese
refugee who now develops explosives for the American
military.

24th June – Atauarjuat – The Fast Runner dir. Zac
Kunuk (2001) 2 hrs 50 mins. First Inuit language film,
based on an oral legend of two generations of Inuit
whose harmonious lives are disrupted by the presence
of an evil spirit. Betrayl, seduction and bloodshed
follow.

1st July – Salud y Solidaridad – Health and Solidarity
2007 dir. Edinburgh Chiapas Solidarity Group 45 mins. 
This film provides a vivid account of how life and
struggle goes on in Edinburgh’s twinned municipality
in Chiapas, Mexico where the indigenous peoples have
declared themselves autonomous from the Mexican
government and are ruling their own affairs. With a
particular focus on the newly established health
clinic, partly built with funds raised in Scotland. An
opportunity to meet with the filmmakers after the
screening.
