Sun 13 April

OUR BRAND IS CRISIS [Dir. Rachel Boynton] [2005] [87mins] 3pm

American mercenary consultants go to Bolivia to influence & control the 2002 Bolivian
Presidential Campaign. They claim to represent the candidate who stands the best chance
of improving the plight of the Bolivian people, but in fact they represent the candidate
willing to pay them most to come to Bolivia, ruling class Gonzal Sanchez De Lozada.

AMERICAN BLACKOUT [Dir. Ian Inaba] [2006] [89mins] 5pm

Chronicles the recurring patterns of the disenfranchisement of African American voters
& other minority groupswitnessed during US elections from 2000 to 2004, while following
the story of Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, who took an active
role in investigating these election debacles & allegations of voting fraud.

20th April
TAKING LIBERTIES SINCE 1997 [Dir. Chris Atkins] [2007] [101mins]
3pm
Film documenting infringement on civil liberties in the UK over the last 10 years. Looks at
new legislation, police powers & technology & its effects on the right to free speech, the
right to protest, the right to privacy, the idea that torture is immoral, the perpetuation
of fear in the "war on terror" & general quashing of political dissent.

5pm SUSPECT NATION [Dir. Neil Ferguson] [2006] [47mins]

Technologyfocussed look into the UK slide towards a "Surveillance
Society", CCTV, ID cards, Biometric Passports, & the increasing
"Database State" which is beginning to penetrate almost every aspect of
our lives. Security measures & legislation effectively label us all as
criminal suspects & do very little to protect people from crime &
terrorism.

27th April

CHAIN CAMERA (dir Kirkby Dick, 2001, 90 mins)

>From the director of SICK comes a film made with footage from 10
camcordeRs shared between 4192 school students from John Marsahall High
School, Los Angeles. Original and candid, this documentary touches on
youth, race, eating disorders, and much more.

4 May to be arranged

11 May 3pm Lilya 4-Ever

700,000 women, according to UN figures, are currently ‘trafficked’
around the world, forced into sexual slavery and prostitution. The film
‘Lilya 4-Ever’ is a very immediate, visual and graphic contribution to
this discussion.

The director Lukas Moodyson tells the true life story of a sixteen year
old ‘trafficked’ from Eastern Europe to Sweden, where she is kept
imprisoned and sold for sex. The film is graphic without being lewd, and
is told from the young people’s view of the world.

It’s not an easy film to watch. But the disgust and anger it engenders
will hopefully raise the profile of the campaign to stop the trafficking
of women, children – and men – across the globe. It inspires anger, and
we need to act on that anger.

Plus speaker from the White Ribbon Campaign - men organising against
violence against women.

Also, hopefully, a rep from SWAN, Sex Workers and Allies Network, and
possibly a film on sex workers rights (details tbc)

18 May

THE FORUM

Sunday 13 April 7pm

Quaker Meeting House, Victoria Terrace, off Lawnmarket (top of Royal
Mile)

Public Discussion

STOPPING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN : Involving men in Edinburgh

with a speaker from the White Ribbon Campaign

Venue fully accessible (ramp and lift)

The next Forum meeting is this Sunday, and we're hosting a speaker from
the White Ribbon Campaign which seeks to invovle men in the fight
to stop men's violence against women.

The campaign is about challenging the taboo nature of this crime, the
silence that can often protect a violent person and allow a violent
relationship to continue that way.

The statistics are awful:1 in 4 women in Scotland are survivors of male
violence, and it's likely that we all already know someone in this
position - but like most survivors, she probably will not have talked
about it.

Feel free to pass this info on to anyone who might be interested. You
can find more info on the campaign at www.whiteribbonscotland.org.uk

Lastly, planning ahead, the May meeting is going to be on Sunday the
18th May and we'll be hosting a group of speakers from New York. They
are from a community group called Movement For Justice in El Barrio and
will be sharing their experience of fighting for community and against
gentrification in New York. Again, 7pm at Quaker Mtg Hse.

A REPORT FROM THE FRONT LINE

The new Mexican State Attack against Zapatista communities

Speaker: Ernesto Ledesma, from CAPISE human rights group, San Cristobal,
Chiapas, Mexico.

8pm Wed 16 April at the Augustine United Church, 14 George IV Bridge,
central Edinburgh

Admission Free (donations welcome)

Mexican human rights activist Ernesto Ledesma will expose the serious
attacks being made on the indigenous zapatista communities Mexico, when
he speaks in Edinburgh on 16th April.

“Paramilitaries and Mexican state forces are both involved in grave
violations of human rights in the indigenous villages in Chiapas,
Mexico,” explained Esther McDonald of the Edinburgh Chiapas Solidarity
Group, who have organised the meeting.

Ernesto works for the human rights organisation CAPISE. Based in the
heart of the conflict zone, CAPISE not only research and document
infringements of civil liberties, they also send human rights observers
to the villages under threat. Ernesto will give a first-hand account of
some of the many recent dramatic developments.

On 1st February 2008 a father and son from the zapatista community of
Vetel Yochib were attacked by police while travelling to help build a
Peace Camp for human rights observers. The police shot the father in the
foot, then took them both to the Playas de Catajaza prison near
Palenque. There they were tortured for seven hours. Only after vigorous
protests by the zapatista authorities and human rights groups, were they
freed after a week in prison.

Five armed police entered the zapatista village of Bolon Ajaw on 21st
February, firing shots in the air. The villagers mobilised, forcing them
to retreat, but not before they had badly beaten two women with their
gun butts. These are only two of many different attacks, some of which
involve whole villages being violently evicted.

The repression in Chiapas has led to many people being unjustly
imprisoned. Ernesto will report on the hungerstrike by over 30 political
prisoners in Chiapas, which within the last few days has led to some of
these prisoners being released.

“The attacks on the zapatista villages are not isolated events, but part
of a strategy coming from the highest levels of the Mexican state,”
explained Esther McDonald. “Those in power are scared that the
autonomous communities created by the zapatistas will encourage other
oppressed people to take power into their own hands.”

The Edinburgh Chiapas Solidarity Group is twinned with a group of 40
zapatista villages known as Autonomous Municipality 16th February, and
have raised over £15,000 for their health clinic and primary schools.

Edinburgh Coalition Against Poverty

Meeting at ACE at 7.30pm the second tuesday every month.

May meeting tues 13 May

Edinburgh Coalition Against Poverty are getting together a phone tree of
people who can turn up to support people who are having serious problems
with authorities like employers, landlords, benefits authorities, debt
collectors, fuel companies etc. It might be to protest at the offices of
a bad landlord, or to back up someone who is having sheriff officers
come to their home. It could be to demonstrate against an exploiting
employer, or at a benefit office which has cut someone’s money.

First we would try talking to the authorities, but if the problem cannot
be sorted out by negotiations, then we could alert everyone on the phone
tree so we can all act together in solidarity.

So far Edinburgh Coalition Against Poverty is backed by Edinburgh
Claimants, the Industrial Workers of the World, and the Autonomous
Centre of Edinburgh. We are building on the long experience of Edinburgh
Claimants in the fields of benefits and debt, and of the IWW in
workplace issues.

Our aim is to help draw together a wide range of people and groups in
the Edinburgh area interested in practical activity to build up
self-organisation to combat poverty - do consider getting involved, your
contribution is needed.

LEITH PERMACULTURE GROUP

The permaculture group had a meeting on saturday 5th of April in which a
site plan was devised for the double allotment sized community garden at
craigentinny allotments.

The ground is waterlogged and so is not suitable for growing veg in a
conventional bed system. Be prepared for some deeply radical gardening
in the next while folks: there was talk of propogation huts made from
cling film, growing mushrooms in a half burnt couch, a miniture fruit
forest a couple of roundhouses withfancy reciprocal roofs and of course
the obligatory willow structure.

With the site plan established it is hoped that the groups energy can be
harnessed to include others in the project via the medium of free
knowledge sharing events (workshops). Details of the site plan can be
found in the LPG dookit in ACE.
Anyone wanting to be kept up to date with all the goings on is welcome
to join the low traffic email list by emailing

THE FILM THEY'RE TRYING TO BAN:
'ON THE VERGE'

THE FILM
In 2004 a group of Brighton peace campaigners began to
bang pot and pans outside their local arms
manufacturers EDO MBM in disgust of their part in the
Iraq war. This has grown into the Smash EDO campaign,
which has cost the company millions, been the subject
of large-scale police operations and has tested the
right to protest in the UK.

Using activist, police and CCTV footage plus
interviews with those involved in the campaign,
'On The Verge'; tells the story of one of
the most persistent and imaginative campaigns to
emerge out of the UK's anti-war movement and direct
action scene.

POLICE TRY TO BLOCK SCREENINGS
In an incredible turn of events, the police have been
doing their best to stop the film from being screened.
So far establishments in Southampton, Chichester,
Bath, Oxford and Brighton have come under police
pressure to cancel film showings.

For more information on the police attempts to ban the
film please visit: http://tinyurl.com/3e3n7d and

AGROFUEL ACTION 15 APRIL

The Edinburgh Agrofuel Action group are planning a protest for April
Biofools Day on the 15th April from 12 midday-2pm. It will be at a BP
petrol station (as BP are
high investors in biofuels). It will be creative and fun, attracting
media attention as well as engaging with the public about the issues.
Please get in touch if you want to be involved:
agrofuelactionedinburgh at googlemail.com(also email this address is you
want to go on the mailing list).

It's part of a wider day of action, with local protests happening around
the UK. April 15th is the day the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation
(RTFO) comes into force, meaning all forecourts will be legally obliged
to sell only fuel which is blended with 2.5% biofuel. Targets increase
to 5% by 2010 and 10% by 2020.

What's wrong with agrofuels? (biofuels)
Deforestation, peatland destruction and nitrogen fertiliser use mean
that agrofuels are actually worse for the climate than fossil fuel. For
example, a study by Paul Crutzen (nobel prize-winner) shows that
rapeseed biodiesel is 70% worse for climate change than ordinary fossil
diesel (even though it's grown in the UK so involves no deforestation or
peatland destruction) due to nitrogen fertiliser use, as this emits
nitrous oxide, a 300x more damaging greenhouse gas than CO2.

People are being evicted from their lands to make way for agrofuel
plantations, often violently with deaths and human rights abuses taking
place. In Argentina 90,000 families and in Paraguay 150,000 families
have been evicted due to soya expansion. These are just 2 examples but
this is happening on a wide scale in South-east Asia, India, Tanzania,
Ethiopia, Colombia and the list goes on.

Food prices are soaring as a result of agrofuels. According to Jean
Ziegler (until recently the UN special rapporteur on the right to food)
there are 12 million more people going hungry now than a year ago due to
rising food prices, something which agrofuels are a big contributer to.
Instead we need to dramatically reduce fossil fuel use, live closer to
work and family, reducing the need to travel, while reducing speed
limits and increasing efficiency of cars.

                              OPEN LETTER

                    'April Fool's Day' in Commons-

one more step to grave injustices

How appropriate that on 'April Fool's Day' Jacqui Smith will launch the
long awaited second reading of The Counter Terrorism Bill 2008. We
should not be fooled. For the last six years the Labour government has
created a climate of fear and deceived us that we face a permanent
emergency as a nation. Hence the most fundamental principles of justice
such as 'habeas corpus' and the right to a fair trial have to be
mutilated in the name of national security.

Although the extension of pre-charge detention from 28 to 42 days has
been aired widely, the draft bill has many proposed police powers which
are equally pernicious particularly when the definition of terrorism
under the 2000 Terrorism Act is so broad that people are being jailed
for possessing DVDs and downloading web pages.

Extra powers - for surveillance, pre-charge questioning and legal
obligations to disclose 'suspicious' financial transactions - will
further encourage arbitrary arrests. Information 'which could be useful
for terrorism' can mean nearly anything and would generally be linked
with politics activities in order to justify prosecutions, as well as to
harass activists. Restrictions could be imposed on travellers to
international demonstrations.

Sinister also are the attempts to extend 'secret’' court procedures to
confiscation of property and to inquests, partly or wholly held in
camera, a move to avoid accountability when we have the next Jean
Charles de Menezes.

A new offence making criminal the failure by volunteers in charities or
NGOs is an attack on the right to silence. The Bill would also
criminalise the collection of information on armed forces by
investigative journalists, thus attacking free speech.

We, the 27 civil society organisations listed hereunder, call on MPs to
hold the government to account and not let this unjust bill through
Parliament without serious challenge. Yes, the government has a duty to
protect the public against terrorists but Parliament has a duty to
protect the public from draconian measures that violate the most
fundamental principles of justice.

REFUGEE SOLIDARITY - VERY URGENT

Subject:Sharon Sylvia Nasuna Urgent Help Needed!

We have just received news that Sharon and her two year old son, Shaun
have been booked onto a flight to Uganda on Sunday 13 april. They are currently
in detention in Dungavel where Shaun is being denied treatment for a
skin condition he suffers from.

We need people to help urgently by faxing Kenya Airways asking them not
to take Sharon and Shaun on the flight. Let them know that Sharon has an
ongoing case with the Home Office and that they cannot remove her from
Britain.

As we said in yesterdays message(see below) Sharon had her new claim for
asylum in her hand when she went to report on Monday and should not have
been detained. Her friends who had gone with her when she went to hand
in her fresh claim witnessed Sharon and Shaun being pulled into the back
of the van screaming.

The Home Office have also claimed they had lost fresh evidence that
Sharon brought with her to support her case! Luckily copies of the
evidence have been found by her friends.

Please help us secure Sharon and Shaun's release from detention and
return to Glasgow by faxing Kenya Airways and the Home Secretary.

Kenya Airways can be reached via Fax at their head office in Nairobi on

+254-20-823488 and by phone on +254-20-6422000

Sharons flight details are as follows

Kenya-Airways flight KQ101/KQ410 20:00 hours April 13th from Heathrow
terminal 5.

Let them know that it is not acceptable to call themselves the pride of
Africa and participate in the removal of Asylum Seekers from the UK or
anywhere in the world.

The Home Secretary Jacqui Smith can be reached by Faxing

The Rt Hon Jacqui Smith, MP, Secretary of State for the Home Office

020-7035-4745 or from outside the Uk +44 207 035 4745

When faxing Jacqui Smith remember to include Sharon's Home Office
reference number N1137405

Let her know that Sharon was in the process of submitting a fresh claim
with supporting new evidence and that her removal would be a travesty of
justice.

Thank you in advance on behalf of all at Unity and all Sharon friends
here in Glasgow.

Unity!!

Sharon Sylvia Nasuna and her two year old son were detained yesterday at
the home office on Brand Street, Glasgow. She was going into the home
office to hand in her fresh Asylum claim when they were detained. So far
the immigration authorities have failed to look at her claim and are
continuing to detain her despite the fact that even their own
regulations say that they cannot detain a person who has a claim
pending.

Even without taking into account Sharon’s experiences in Uganda and the
treatment she faces if returns it is despicable that this woman and her
child have been detained whilst she had new evidence to support her case
in her hand!

Please help us get Sharon and Shaun out of detention by faxing the Home
Secretary Jacqui Smith and demanding that she intervene and release
Sylvia and Shaun.

Fax the Rt Hon Jacqui Smith, MP, Secretary of State for the Home Office
asking that Syharon Sylvia Nasuna and her son are released and returned
to Glasgw. Please remember to include Sharon’s Home Office Reference
Number N1137405

Fax 020 7035 4745 / from outside UK+44 207 035 4745

*No fax machine? No matter!*
If you have a computer and access to the internet you do not need a fax
machine to fax.

There are two methods of faxing:
>From your browser go to:
http://www.tpc.int/sendfax.html
(the number must be entered with the country code
so 020 7035 4745 (Home Office) would be 44 20 7035 4745

Send a fax via email
Use this email address format :
remote-printer.recipient_name at fax_number.iddd.tpc.int

So, to send the fax to Jacqui Smith put:
remote-printer.Jacqui_Smith at 442070354745.iddd.tpc.int
Just copy your fax message into the body of the email.

Thanks for your support
