1)
11th May at 3pm
LILYA – 4 EVER
700,000 women, according to UN figures, are currently 'trafficked'
around the world, forced into sexual slavery and prostitution. The film
'Lilya 4-Ever' is a very immediate, visual and graphic contribution to
this discussion.
The director Lukas Moodyson tells the true life story of a sixteen year
old 'trafficked' from Eastern Europe to Sweden, where she is kept
imprisoned and sold for sex. The film is graphic without being lewd,
and is told from the young people's view of the world.
It's not an easy film to watch. But the disgust and anger it engenders
will hopefully raise consciouness and desire to end oppression of women.
the whole event is intended to generate open discussion around these
complex issues with a represrntative from SWAN (Sex Workers and Allies
Network) and
a speaker from the White Ribbon Campaign - men organising against
violence against women – present for Q & A's

18th May 3pm
DEAD SOCIETY
Montage and (brilliant) music interwoven with a telephone interview
between the film maker tomas toivonen and anarcho primitivist author
John Zerzan. Subjects covered include 'why i hate wind turbines',
vivisection, how to make fire, self defence, freeganism, revolt!
Thought provoking, at times bleak but ulitimately uplifting and
inspiring film. Not to be missed!
Speakers from both the Anti Farming Alliance and Dingy Industry will
host a discussion on dismantling civilisation following the screening.
Tea and crumpets will be provided.
queer, feminist avante garde short films
25th May at 3pm
MYSTERIOUS OBJECT AT NOON (Dogfahr Nai Meu Man)
Directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul (2000)
Apichatpong Weerasethakul shakes up the boundaries
between documentary and fiction in this hypnotic and
deeply affecting film. He journeys all over Thailand
asking ordinary people to contribute episodes to a
chain story that begins with a strange object rolling
out from underneath a teachers skirt and unfolds into
an increasingly bizarre tale..

5)
Monday May 12th, 7-9pm

"The Nakbah Project - Return of the Soul"
is an exhibition that will run in Edinburgh from July 30th to August 18th.
Many, many refugees from 1948 are involved with British artists in putting
the
work together. It will truly represent the
hopes and anguish and agony of those ethnically cleansed in 1948 and still
living in refugee camps.

It
needs local support, support that will contribute to a very significant
art work
that will oppose the destruction of the memory of these Palestinians
as much of the British media propagates the Israeli narrative of
'Independence' while concealing the human cost to the Palestinians.

The
Edinburgh international festival is a place from where we can send a
message to
the Palestinians, the Israelis and the world that the Palestinian
experience of
violation and displacement in 1948 (and today) will not be concealed.

Come
to the Conference Room (ground floor) at the David Hume Tower in Edinburgh
University next Monday to hear a presentation on this remarkable project
and why
and how you can help.

Please
notify campaign at scottishpsc.org.uk or
call 0795 800 2591 to let us know you would like to
help.

8)The aim of feminist revolution is for women to achieve our total
humanity, which means destroying the masculine and feminine roles which
make both men and women only half human. Creating a women's culture is the
means through which we shall restore our humanity”
Cathy Levine
'The Tyranny of Tyranny'

4TH - 31ST MAY 2008!!! A whole month of events put on by Ladyfest
Edinburgh. ART MUSIC LITERATURE DANCE COMEDY DISCUSSIONS WORKSHOPS.
Ladyfest is an idea. A community based, not-for-profit global celebration
of women in the arts, culture and society. The 1st Ladyfest festival was
held in Olympia in 2000 and since then loads of independently run
festivals have been happening across the world. It has it's roots in riott
grrrls and D.I.Y culture.

Our aims: - to celebrate female creativity across all artforms - to create
a space to rejuvinate discussions about feminism and its relevance in
society today - to create an alternative space with events organised
primarily by women - to give the opportunity for women to come forward and
put on events/workshops and redress the balance of male dominated
arts/music festivals - to work in partnership with already established
groups in Edinburgh and to make Ladyfest accessible to all - to raise
money for local charities including Zero Tolerance.

Through workshops and events we aim to challenge all forms of
stereotyping. we want to stimulate discussions and learn new skills. we
want to motivate women to stand up and use their voices politically,
creatively and in their everyday home and work situations.
