RIB is a support structure for a number of individuals and groups who
produce publications, information and materials for sale, view and free
distribution.
The project is self-financed by the participants, no public or corporate
monies are involved, no one takes a wage, it is not party politically
aligned and is autonomous from other organisations.
The project is more than an occasional bookshop and travelling bookstall -
it is also a temporary library, a videotheque, a meeting point for
discussion, distribution and ideas, as well as a place to come and have a
coffee and a blether.
More about the Radical Independent Book Fair at http://www.ribproject.org/
The Reshuffle event which happens periodically is one such idea that
attempts to mix the idea of enjoyment of local space and place, such as
community centres with some discussion and workshops in the mix about
housing environment and such like.

FREEDOM TO PROTEST DEMO EDINBURGH
A peaceful demonstration is planned to assert our right to freely protest
without fear. It will be held at 12pm on Sunday 18th of May at Parliament
Square, as a response to the campaign of harassment and intimidation which
Lothian and Borders Police is directing at peaceful protsters in
Edinburgh. Such repression violates human rights and, if it continues, it
will stifle popular participation in civil society. The demonstration is
also in solidarity with the dozens of working class people who are
oppressed by the Edinburgh 'justice' system every day.
Police Harrasment in Edinburgh
On 15th April five people in the political performance art group,
Edinburgh Rebel Clowns, were surrounded by police at a demonstration
against the use of biofuels [1] and detained for questioning; they were
investigating numerous protests that they claimed had happened in
Edinburgh over the previous months. They were later charged with a 'breach
of the peace' for behaving like clowns at the biofuels demonstration,
despite eye witnesses reporting that they were friendly and entertaining.
While they were in custody, one woman was singled out, interviewed for two
hours and kept in solitary confinement. When she was returned to the cell
with her friends, she started vomiting from stress.
Sophie Bastable, 20, an Edinburgh University student and member of the
rebel clown group said "We were targeted for no apparent reason other than
dressing up as clowns and having political opinions. We had no idea that
participating in a peaceful demonstration against biofuels could result in
arbritrary arrest, and were shocked when we were detained without warning
by lothian and borders police."
Today, the 12th May, Peter Wyszomirfki a 27 year old artist and Edinburgh
resident was physically assaulted, and went to the police to report it:
"After giving my statement another officer came into the room, he was very
intimidating and accusatory saying: I know you, you were at the protest at
the Quartermile [2]. He showed me photographs and asked me loads of
questions about people and events that I knew nothing about. He also said
that the clowns are dangerous people, and that I shouldn't join them".
There have also been several early morning detentions of environmental
campaigners. On Friday march 28th, three individuals were detained for
questioning at the same time; they were woken up, and taken from their
bedrooms with only just enough time to get dressed, then held and
questioned for four and a half hours.
Oliver Munnion, 23, an Environmental Science student at Edinburgh
University said "it's important to remind the police that they are public
servants, and accountable for their actions. Their tactics of intimidation
are reminiscent of more oppressive regimes."
Several environmental campaigners have been contacted by the police and
offered money in exchange for information about past and future
demonstrations in Edinburgh.
Our Demands
Not only are the Police acting in a way which contradicts their
obligations to Article 10, and Article 11 of the European Convention of
Human Rights; they are suppressing political protest, and if such
activities continue, there will be detrimental consequences for popular
participation in civil society.
In light of this we have the following demands:
We demand that the Lothian and Borders Police end the intimidation of
peaceful protests.
We demand that harassment in the guise of 'evidence gathering' is stopped.
We demand that our human right to freedom of expression, freedom of
assembly and association be respected.
We demand that people in police custody are treated with respect and dignity
We make these demands in solidarity with millions of people around the
world whose rights are infringed upon by unjust governments and oppressive
police forces; and in solidarity with the dozens of working class people
every day who are subjected to the violence of Edinburgh's 'justice'
system, people who are treated without dignity or respect by the police or
the court.
We call upon every freedom loving person to come out and demonstrate at
12pm on the 18th of May at Parliament Square [3], to assert our freedom to
protest, and to ensure that these rights are not eroded by aggressive
policing.
Notes
[1] a fuel source which is contributing to famine and environmental
devastation in the developing world
[2] A peaceful protest, raising awareness about the problems that
supermarkets such as Sainsbury's have on the local economy and on the
environment.
[3] Parliament square is located just off Edinburgh's royal mile, near
High St, and the City Chambers.

Forum meeting this sunday 18th May
in conjunction with Edinburgh Chiapas Solidarity Group
NEIGHBOURHOOD RESISTANCE
Stop developers ripping off the community
speakers from
Movement for Justice in El Barrio, Harlem, New York City
Save Our Old Town, Edinburgh
7pm Quaker Meeting House, Victoria Terrace
(access off Lawnmarket, top of Royal Mile, near Castle)
Venue fully accessible (ramp and lift)
The Movement for Justice in El Barrio (MJB) is an inspiring grass-roots
organisation.
"BEST POWER TO THE PEOPLE MOVEMENT IN NYC"-VILLAGE VOICE
"IT IS REAL GRASS-ROOTS DEMOCRACY, AND IT IS BEING
PRACTICED BY THE IMMIGRANTS WHO LIVE IN EAST
HARLEM"-DAILY NEWS
We hope to have Juan from the MJB speak at the meeting, but currently he is
being denied access to the UK by the immigration authorities. In any case
the meeting will definitely go ahead, with a film about the MJB and the
speaker from SOOT and, hopefully, a live web link up with Juan.
The members of "Movement for Justice in El Barrio" are mainly poor
Mexican immigrants. Having driven their previous landlord, millionaire
Mr Kessner, out of East Harlem, they are now involved in a major battle
with new landlord, UK-based multinational Dawnay Day.
Juan explains : "Driven by multi-national corporations and
profit-seeking landlords and facilitated by city officials,
gentrification has swept New York causing the grand-scale displacement
of low-income people of colour and immigrants from our communities. East
Harlem is experiencing a wave of harassment, abuse and intimidation in
attempts by greedy landlords to evict us from our homes in order to
raise rents and increase profits. Movement for Justice in El Barrio is
fighting back: "We Will Not be Moved!!!"
The group accuses Dawnay Day of trying to drive its tenants out of their
homes by the imposition of illegal charges. Juan says "We are organizing
on a transnational level to combat displacement in El Barrio - East
Harlem - by building a multi-national network to go after one of our main
targets, the multi-national corporation Dawnay, Day Group at their
central headquarters in London and on multiple continents where they
hold property." Dawnay Day also own the posh Carlton Hotel on
Edinburgh's North Bridge, and hotels in Troon and Stirling as part of
Paramount Hotel Group. Movement for Justice in El Barrio are planning a
demonstration at Dawnay Day's London HQ on Sat 4 October, as part of a
week of action in the UK, hopefully including Scotland.
Movement for Justice in El Barrio is committed to a grass-roots way of
organising, stating:
"For Movement for Justice in El Barrio, the struggle
for justice means fighting for the liberation of
women, immigrants, lesbians, people of color, gays and
the transgender community. We all share a common enemy
and its called neoliberalism. Neoliberalism wishes to
divide us and keep us from combining our forces. We
will defeat this by continuing to unite our entire
community until we achieve true liberation for all."
MJB has been active for 3 years, and has 400 members, tenants in
privately-rented housing in mainly Hispanic East Harlem. They have
launched an innovative form of local democracy, "a consultation of El
Barrio", in which 1,500 local people expressed their views on which
issues the movement should take up and prioritise. This led the New York
Daily News to state :"It is real grass-roots democracy, and it is being
practised by the immigrants who live in East Harlem."
The members of Movement for Justice in El Barrio are mainly Mexican
immigrants, many of them without legal immigration papers. They take
inspiration from the Zapatista-initiated Other Campaign, to which they
have affiliated. This international campaign aims to organise among
oppressed and exploited people at the grass-roots "from below and the
left".
MJB are keen to make links with community groups in Scotland. Thus at this
meeting they are being joined by a speaker from Save Our Old Town,
campaigning for community-based change in Edinburgh's Old Town, and
against the "Caltongate" development.

LADYFEST EDINBURGH
The aim of feminist revolution is for women to achieve our total
humanity, which means destroying the masculine and feminine roles which
make both men and women only half human. Creating a women's culture is the
means through which we shall restore our humanity
Cathy Levine
'The Tyranny of Tyranny'
4TH - 31ST MAY 2008!!! A whole month of events put on by Ladyfest
Edinburgh. ART MUSIC LITERATURE DANCE COMEDY DISCUSSIONS WORKSHOPS.
Ladyfest is an idea. A community based, not-for-profit global celebration
of women in the arts, culture and society. The 1st Ladyfest festival was
held in Olympia in 2000 and since then loads of independently run
festivals have been happening across the world. It has it's roots in riott
grrrls and D.I.Y culture.
Our aims: - to celebrate female creativity across all artforms - to create
a space to rejuvinate discussions about feminism and its relevance in
society today - to create an alternative space with events organised
primarily by women - to give the opportunity for women to come forward and
put on events/workshops and redress the balance of male dominated
arts/music festivals - to work in partnership with already established
groups in Edinburgh and to make Ladyfest accessible to all - to raise
money for local charities including Zero Tolerance.
Through workshops and events we aim to challenge all forms of
stereotyping. we want to stimulate discussions and learn new skills. we
want to motivate women to stand up and use their voices politically,
creatively and in their everyday home and work situations.

3) ONGOING ACTIVITIES AND INFORMATION
Feminist Health Book.
THREADS.
changes during the menstrual cycle
feminism and anatomy
medical model of menstruation
the politics of so-called PMS.
Hi
'Threads' is a book that I've finished putting together.
It's a collection of information, thoughts and ideas that were the basis
of workshops I did about the experience and politics of the menstrual
cycle and so-called PMS, which included information and discussion about
anatomy and sexuality. I collated all the info from those workshops and
expanded on the ideas. 'Threads' mixes writing, quotes, excerpts, personal
stories, illustrations and images.
Threads contains;
information and thoughts about changes that can be experienced during the
menstrual cycle, and a chapter about the experience and politics of
so-called PMS;
a look at feminist redefinitions of female anatomy based on women's own
observations and experiences;
information and thinking about the history of western anatomy and about
different understandings of the human body (i.e. Chinese Medicine);
some on the history of sexology; on intersex politics; on gender;
a look at the medical model of menstruation and critique of biomedicine;
and at other understandings of menstruation;
information about how awareness of the changes that can happen during the
menstrual cycle can be used as a method of contraception (FAM);
'Threads' is about these things in the broader cultural, social and
economic contexts we are living in and how that informs our experience of
ourselves, of health, of life.
You can get copies of 'Threads' from

Bookprice is £6
The book is not for profit, DIY and self published. I tried to keep the
price as low as possible.
If anyone else can help with distro or wants to take books for a stall/
workshop etc. that would be great, please get in touch. And of course
please forward this mail to anyone who might be interested.
Sorry if you get this mail more that once because I mailed you personally
and to lists you might be on. And hi if I haven't been in touch for a
while and this mail is suddenly landing in your inbox. If you read
'Threads' it would be great to hear back any thoughts/ comments.
