"The Savage Extreme of a Narrow Policy Spectrum" - Five Questions
with Noam Chomsky
By Merlin Chowkwanyun
The term "permanent war economy" is attributed to Charles Wilson,
CEO of GE, who warned at the end of World War II that the US must
not return to a civilian economy, but must keep to a "permanent
war economy" of the kind that was so successful during the war: a
semi-command economy, run mostly by corporate executives, geared
to military production.

Terror scare paves way for police-state measures
By WSWS Editorial Board, WSWS
Anyone who denies that the Bush administration is capable of
using the threat of terrorism to manipulate, and even cancel, the
November election - such as Democratic Senator Joseph Lieberman,
who declared such suspicions "madness" - is himself ignoring the
plain facts. What, after all, was the invasion of Iraq, but a
cynical and calculated use of the terrorist threat, employing
outright lies, to drag the country into war?

THE TOWERING INFERNO! - Fire and the Incandescent Varieties of
Resistance to Empire
By Green Anarchy
If there's one substance that's emblematic of our age, this epoch
of turmoil and destruction, it's the resplendent and
transformative element of Fire. The Empire is glowing from heat
as its physical structures of dominion are set ablaze by a
worldwide eruption of insubordination. A counterattack against
the reign of capital and property has been ignited by the Earth
Liberation Front, who in late April torched an under-construction
housing development in Washington state, causing an estimated $1
million in damages. From British Columbia to Italy, a radiant
conflagration has burst forth-both within and outside the State's
jurisdiction-and the molotov cocktail has begun to emerge as the
favored weapon of the exploited, the flickering beacon of freedom
that best exemplifies the spreading dissention.

Terrorists Rule the Roost
by Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr., LewRockwell.com
You heard the warnings that terrorists could attack specific
sites in Washington, Manhattan, and Newark. We are talking the
stock exchange, Citigroup, the World Bank, and the IMF. Had it
never occurred to anyone that these might be targets? No, we had
to find that out by discovering secret memos. Thank goodness for
our intelligence services!

They Knew...
By David Sirota and Christy Harvey, In These Times
Top administration officials repeatedly ignored warnings that
their assertions about Iraq's supposed Weapons of Mass
Destruction (WMD) and connections to al Qaeda were overstated. In
some cases, they were told their claims were wholly without
merit, yet they went ahead and made them anyway. Even the Senate
report admits that the White House "misrepresented" classified
intelligence by eliminating references to contradictory
assertions. In short, they knew they were misleading America. And
they did not care.

Two Traditions: WMD and Official Disinformation (59 Years After
Hiroshima)
By Mickey Z., Press Action
We are approaching August 6, 2004, the 59th anniversary of the
U.S. terror bombing of Hiroshima, and it's apparent that the
history and use of WMD is still not fully understood.

Plastics: Your Formidable Enemy
by Jan Lundberg, Culture Change
Imagine the near future without petroleum, as we try to sustain
ourselves and do things in a more natural or austere way. Such
as, no hoses replaceable for watering gardens - just when we have
to do more local gardening for a post-petroleum food supply. If
this were not a serious enough challenge, it turns out that
plastics are full of poisons that kill living things such as
people. Think of it as a permanent, toxic oil spill. The dangers
of plastics have been ignored and suppressed for decades, but the
recent news on the extent that plastics are killing sea animals
and birds will finally raise the human health issue through the
environmental focus.

Worst Coverage Ever? - Reporting on the UN Oil-For-Food Program
is Rife With Conservative Talking Points and Glaring Omissions
by Joshua Holland, Dissident Voice
For conservatives, the story is all about the UN. That's because
the 'scandal' confirms the long-held belief that Turtle Bay is
occupied by thoroughly corrupt and incompetent bureaucrats. And
the affair doesn't just sully the UN; if the sanctions program
proves to have been deeply flawed, the argument to go to war
takes on greater weight in hindsight. But the simple and largely
unreported fact is that there is no UN oil-for-food scandal.

AMERICA'S LAST WAR
By Ted Rall, Yahoo.com
The Bush Administration began test-marketing a war against Iran
by naming it as a charter member of the Axis of EvilTM. For the
moment, however, electioneering to an alert-jittery electorate
has forced the Bushies to place their neofascist tendencies in a
lockbox. Bush and Cheney are deploying hoary Republican
rhetorical ploys; referring to John Kerry as a flipflopping
limousine liberal may harken to such classic GOP candidacies as
Dole '96 and Reagan '80, but the war criminals of Guantánamo and
Abu Ghraib are playing the role of traditional Republicans only
to close the deal on a gullible electorate. Whether the Bushian
neofascists win the election or opt for another end run around
democracy, planning for a second-term war against Iran is already
under way.

The Anarchists' Datebook: The FBI's anti-terrorism task force
goes Info-shopping.
By Nadia Pflaum, Pitch
When 21-year-old Nate Hoffmann called his roommate, Jeff Kinder,
and told him that the FBI was looking for him, Kinder thought
Hoffmann was being paranoid. He reconsidered when a black Ford
Explorer tailed him as he pulled into his West Plaza driveway.
