Hollywood an Agent of Hegemony: The War Film
by Tony Kashani, Dissident Voice

>From the early days Hollywood (the institution) has understood
that film is a powerful medium, thus movies were created with
emotional designs on the individual audience in order to control
his/her mind. While war rewrites civil and criminal laws,
Hollywood rewrites history.

Running on Empty: A field guide to the coming fuel crunch
by Brian Kaller, Pulse of the Twin Cities

Five minutes before he was supposed to take the stage, Marion
King Hubbert's bosses at Shell Oil called him on the phone and
begged him not to go through with it. They had heard that
Hubbert, a respected geophysicist, was about to tell a meeting of
the American Petroleum Institute in San Antonio, Texas, that all
the oil production in the United States would soon peak, and,
eventually, end. It was 1956.

The virtue of idleness
by Tom Hodgkinson, The Guardian

>From the Bible on, moralists and nags have promoted the benefits
of hard work and early rising. They are mistaken, argues Tom
Hodgkinson. For breathing space to create and time to reflect,
indolence is essential. He offers a guide to easy living,
pleasurable illness, and effortless sex.

Bush Zones Go National
by Jim Hightower, The Nation

Once ensconced in the White House, the Bushites institutionalized
the art of dissing dissent, routinely dispatching the Secret
Service to order local police to set up FSZs to quarantine
protesters wherever Bush goes. The embedded media trooping
dutifully behind him almost never cover this fascinating and
truly newsworthy phenomenon, instead focusing almost entirely on
spoon-fed soundbites from the President's press office.

The Inner Workings of Alternative Media (Parts 1-3)
by Kirsten Anderberg

Ben Franklin said freedom of the press is in owning the press.
And these days, with the internet and Xerox machines, owning, or
at least renting, your own press, has never been easier. I would
argue that freedom of the press is in owning the press *and*
understanding marketing, though. I interviewed some people
involved in alternative, independent and "parallel" media forms
for this article. I wanted to see what motivated people working
in alternative media, but I also wanted to see what they needed,
and what the public could do to help support their efforts...to
ensure a healthy alternative to mainstream media for us all.

Reporting for Duty: Where the Killing Starts
by David Edwards, Media Lens

Where did all this killing begin? We might think it began with
the leaders who issued the orders for the invasion of Iraq, and
with the pilots and soldiers who pushed the buttons and pulled
the triggers. But in truth the killing always starts with you and
us - the public. First, we have to be persuaded that we are led
by good, reasonable people who absolutely would not kill unless
they had to. Psychological buffers must be set up in our minds to
protect us from the realisation that our leaders are willing to
kill cynically - for power, for profit, for the status quo.

Iraq and the Problem of Peak Oil
by F. William Engdahl, Ballaciao

Today, much of the world is convinced the Bush Administration did
not wage war against Iraq and Saddam Hussein because of threat
from weapons of mass destruction, nor from terror dangers. Still
a puzzle, however, is why Washington would risk so much in terms
of relations with its allies and the entire world, to occupy
Iraq. There is compelling evidence that oil and geopolitics lie
at the heart of the still-hidden reasons for the military action
in Iraq.

Go Ahead, Mr. Wendell: At 70, Wendell Berry remains a champion of
agrarian ideals
by Mark Engler, Grist Magazine

Wendell Berry, 70 years old today, has established himself as
many things in his lifetime: a veteran sage of sustainable
agriculture; a progressive defender of virtue and tradition; one
of our most famous farmers to renounce the tractor; and one of
our most acclaimed authors to shun the computer.

Flying the Hysterical Skies
By Margaret Kimberley, The Black Commentator

If we profile in airports, why not banks, boardrooms and the
halls of Congress? Because if every Arab can be a presumed
Mohammed Atta, then isn't every white man a presumed Richard
Grasso or Ken Lay?
