Blood Money: The Human-Capital Equation of the U.S. Occupation of
Iraq
by Stephen "Flint" Arthur, NEFAC

When a state is determined to pursue war, and all forms of
indirect symbolic protest actions have failed to sway politicians
to halt their imperialist aggression, the only remaining option
is direct action by the working class. One option is a general
strike by workers that can effect the production and
transpiration of military capital, that is the materials
essential for the war machine. The other is to deprive the
military of the labor it needs to fight the war. The slogan from
the Vietnam War protests deliberately speaks to this, "What if
they had a war, and no one came?" The U.S. military is
overwhelmingly recruited from the working class, and convincing
our class as a whole to refuse to work for this blood money may
be our best chance for both ending the war in Iraq and limiting
the imperialist ambitions of the U.S. for future decades.

"Uncle Tom" Gitlin Bleats "Cool It"
By Dave Lindorff, CounterPunch

... the Epistle of Gitlin and Passacantando offers us a
sepia-toned, revisionist view of the '60s. The Gandhi-inspired
marches and protests of the Civil Rights era were indeed powerful
tools in the struggle for African-American civil rights, but it
was the riots in Watts, Detroit, Newark and elsewhere, and the
threat of a much more militant Black Power movement, as promoted
by the likes of Stokely Carmichael, Malcolm X and Fred Hampton
and others that led President Johnson and the Establishment to
decide they had to cut a deal.

The FBI has begun interrogating activists in Colorado, Kansas and
other states about their plans to protest at the convention.
Meanwhile the NYPD has put 56 activists around the country under
24 hours surveillance. Reports indicate the NYPD has assigned one
supervisor and six police officers to track each of the 56
activists.

Imprisoned Decency
Arjan El Fassed, Electronic Intifada

Since 1967 to date, Israel has arbitrarily detained over 630,000
Palestinians. In 1989 alone, Israel detained 50,000 Palestinians,
representing 16% of the entire male population of the West Bank
and Gaza Strip between the ages of 14 and 55. By way of
comparison, that same year, out of a total African population of
24 million in South Africa, no more than 5,000 or 0.2% were
detained for security offenses against the apartheid regime. Over
200 Palestinian prisoners have died while in Israeli custody, due
to torture, ill-treatment, deprivation of medical treatment, and
neglect.

Specter of a police state
WSWS

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has embarked on a large-scale
operation to intimidate and attack opponents of the Bush
administration's war policy. In advance of the Democratic
National Convention held earlier this month in Boston and the
upcoming Republican convention in New York City, the FBI's Joint
Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) has mobilized agents to spy on,
interrogate and threaten antiwar protesters and disrupt their
activities.

Send in the CIA: Goss and "Preventive Direct Action" in America
Kurt Nimmo, kurtnimmo.com

"Rep. Porter Goss, President Bush's nominee to head the CIA,
recently introduced legislation that would give the president new

authority to direct CIA agents to conduct law-enforcement
operations inside the United States-including arresting American
citizens," write Michael Isikoff and Mark Hosenball for Newsweek.

FBI Knocks, Part II
Dreyfuss Report

Consider these two items: First, Congress, stampeded by the
families of 9/11 victims, is holding hearings about reorganizing
the intelligence system to further blend the CIA and the FBI and
strengthen domestic spying and surveillance capabilities. And
second, there is a growing flap over the FBI's shocking abuse of
its powers, as reported in The New York Times this week, in
harassing and intimidating protesters who are planning
demonstrations and possibly-gasp!-civil disobedience in New York
at the GOP convention.

'Palestinian terror - morally justified'
By Lawrence Smallman, Aljazeera

A leading radical philosopher, who has been compared to Bertrand
Russell and Jean-Paul Sartre and praised by Noam Chomsky, says
Palestinian "terrorism" is a moral response to Israeli ethnic
cleansing.

Non-violence in the Palestinian arsenal
Charles Demers, Seven Oaks Magazine

The re-emergence of non-violent tendencies within the Palestinian
national movement is cause for celebration, but not moralizing
nor condescension. There is still a place for the armed struggle
to which Palestinians, as an occupied people, have an absolute
right.
