Iraqi editor's experience in US custody
By Ahmed Janabi

They think because we are a revered Sunni Muslim organisation, we
might have information about the so-called Sunni resistance, but
the truth is the resistance is Iraqi not Sunni. They asked me,
why we hate them? I told them that we do not hate the American
people, they are welcomed as tourists, traders.etc., but not as
occupiers.

A Lost Cause?
By Stephen Gowans

George Carlin once remarked that there a lot of dumb people in
the world, and then there are people who don't, at first, seem
dumb, but once you get to know them, turn out to be fucking
stupid, full of shit, or fucking nuts. This, I can attest, is a
truer statement than anything you can read in this, the run up to
the US presidential election, by Tariq Ali, David Barsamian or
Michael Moore. Dan Quayle, said Carlin, was all three: fucking
stupid, full of shit, and fucking nuts. Which is what I've come
to think of the socialists for Kerry, Marxists for Kerry,
Communists for Kerry, progressives for Kerry, antiwar activists
for Kerry and Michael Moore ditto-heads for Kerry, who've piled
onto the Kerry for President bandwagon.

The warlords of America: The debate between US liberals and
conservatives is a fake
By John Pilger, New Statesman

On 6 May last, the US House of Representatives passed a
resolution which, in effect, authorised a "pre-emptive" attack on
Iran. The vote was 376-3. Undeterred by the accelerating disaster
in Iraq, Republicans and Democrats, wrote one commentator, "once
again joined hands to assert the responsibilities of American
power". The joining of hands across America's illusory political
divide has a long history. The native Americans were slaughtered,
the Philippines laid to waste and Cuba and much of Latin America
brought to heel with "bipartisan" backing. Wading through the
blood, a new breed of popular historian, the journalist in the
pay of rich newspaper owners, spun the heroic myths of a
supersect called Americanism, which advertising and public
relations in the 20th century formalised as an ideology,
embracing both conservatism and liberalism.

Still Not Getting by in Bush's America
By Joel Wendland

It is clear that Bush's tax policies have shifted the burden of
financing federal spending to the working class. It is we who
will have to pay for these tax policies: we will pay
disproportionately to make up for the growing deficit with higher
interest rates, higher tax rates, and more cuts in social
services we all rely on.

Bush's dubious terror alerts
Bill Berkowitz, Working for Change

When the going gets tough, the "tough" get to issuing terrorist
alerts, announcing high profile arrests, and raising the
terrorism threat level. Since January 2002, according to
JuliusBlog, an Internet web log, there have been at least fifteen
incidents where Team Bush, responding to adverse news or dipping
presidential poll numbers, turned either Attorney General John
Ashcroft or Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge loose to ramp
up talk of terrorism and terrorist attacks.

Monkeywrench Hope: An Interview with Jeffrey St. Clair
By Joshua Frank, Press Action

The big groups, aka Gang Green, function politically as little
more than green front for the Democratic Party. Of course, they
inflate Kerry as an environmental crusader. They would say, and
indeed have said, the same thing about any Democratic nominee.
That's their job. They do it very well, indeed. They should,
because the Beltway Greens aren't really environmentalists any
more in the way we used to think of enviros 15 or 20 years ago.
These aren't activists, but lawyers and lobbyists, mainly from
Ivy League schools, overwhelmingly white and liberal, who could
(and perhaps will) just as easily be lobbying on health care,
abortion rights, trade policy. They come packing with a PhD in
deal-making. There's no driving commitment to wilderness or
burning rage about cancer alley or passionate concern about the
fate of the grizzly. It's all very congenial, nicely compensated,
prefabricated and totally uninspired.

Google's Wealth Built on Uncle Sam's Shoulders
by Chuck Collins, The Progressive Trail

Google is a dramatic case study of the ways in which societal
investment creates a fertile ground for private wealth creation.
Taxpayer funded institutions, which enable a Google wealth
explosion to occur, are unparalleled on the planet. Consider the
role of public research, regulated market mechanisms, property
rights protections and a wide range of public infrastructure that
makes the Google story possible.
