Alternative Press Review - Your Guide Beyond the Mainstream

We should never forget that everything Adolf Hitler did in Germany was
"legal" and everything the Hungarian freedom fighters did in Hungary was
"illegal." -- Martin Luther King, Jr., "Letter from Birmingham Jail," Why We
Can't Wait, 1963

Individuals have international duties which transcend the national
obligations of obedience. Therefore [individual citizens] have the duty to
violate domestic laws to prevent crimes against peace and humanity from
occurring. -- The Nuremberg Tribunal (1945-1946)

David Walker's Revolutionary Appeal: (Peals of Cries for) Where John Brown
is Buried
by Richard Oxman

Nothing contributed more to the revolutionary fervor necessary for the
emancipation of slaves in the U.S. than the publication of David Walker's
Appeal... to the Colored Citizens of the World But in Particular and very
Expressly to those of the United States of America in September, 1829. It
was a huge threat to both the slave-holding South (which did everything it
could to suppress the document) and Northern moderates, who (although they
opposed slavery in principle) agreed that the pamphlet was inappropriate and
incendiary.

Collapse of the petroleum delusion / Rise of the DIY movement
by Jan Lundberg

An historic change in social relations, as a deep, cultural transformation,
is foreseeable if humanity is to return to sustainability. Western
civilization is largely the result of turning our backs on mutual aid and
sustainability, pretending we can devour the world as if it is endless, for
individual gain. Rather than promising you a green Utopia of technofixes and
empty hope for a semblance of the status quo, I offer logic that leads from
acknowledging resource depletion and associated strife that have begun
irreversibly. Following today's trends, signs and the laws of nature, we can
anticipate the unraveling of the dominant, overextended system of
corporatist order
that modern folk presently take for granted as normal.

Smedley Butler, Meet John Perkins
by Russell Mokhiber and Robert Weissman

Remember Smedley Butler? He was perhaps the most decorated Major General in
Marine Corps history. In the early part of this century, he fought and
killed for the United States around the world. Butler was awarded two
Congressional Medals of Honor. Then, when he returned to the United States
he wrote a book titled "War is a Racket" which opens with the memorable
lines: "War is a racket. It always has been." "I was a high class muscleman
for Big Business, for Wall Street and for the Bankers," Butler said. "In
short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism."

An Interview with an Anti-war Veteran from the Iraq War
Jim Talib HM3 (FMF/PJ) interviewed by Derek Seidman

On one of my trips to drop off a detainee at the jail, the Senior
Interrogator told us not to bring them in any more. 'Just shoot them' he
said, I was stunned, I couldn't believe he actually said it. He was not
joking around, he was giving us a directive. A few days later a group of
Humvees from another unit passed by one of our machine gun positions, and
they had the bodies of two dead Iraqi's strapped to their hoods like a
couple of deer. One of the bodies had exposed brain matter that had begun to
cook onto the hood of the vehicle, it was a gruesome, medieval display. So
much of what I experienced seemed out of control, I saw so little respect
for the living and almost none for the dead, and there was almost no
accountability.

The Hierarchy of Human Worth
By Kirsten Anderberg

Some human lives seem to be worth "more" than others, as uncouth as it may
be to say it so bluntly. Certainly we see this in the current war situation.
It appears Iraqi and Afghanistan lives are worth less than American lives.
The big deal made over the tiny numbers of American dead from *their* war in
Iraq, compared to the hoards of Iraqi dead and wandering homeless refugees,
hungry mothers, shoeless children, cold people, shivering at night, is odd,
at best. Their lives are nothing compared to an American soldier's life and
the fight for "freedom" for the Iraqi people he is leading. The press plays
it up as if one American soldier death should be paid for by 100 or more
Iraqi deaths.

Activists Crawl Through Web to Untangle US Secrecy
William Fisher, Antiwar.com

To combat the Bush administration's penchant for secrecy, U.S. citizens have
been forced to unearth new sources for information they once read in their
daily newspapers. But thanks to a few dedicated individuals and
not-for-profit groups - and the Internet - such material is easier to come
by than ever before.

The Crushing of Fallujah
James Petras, CounterPunch

I am reading William Shirer's Berlin Diary, a journalist's account of Nazi
political propaganda during the 1930's, as I watch the US 'news' reports of
the violent assault on Fallujah. The US mass media 'reports', the style,
content and especially the language echo their Nazi predecessor of 70 years
ago to an uncanny degree. Coincidence? Of course! In both instances we have
imperialist armies conquering countries, leveling cities and slaughtering
civilians--and the mass media, private in form, state appendages in
practice, disseminate the most outrageous lies, in defense and praise of the
conquering 'storm troopers'--call them SS or Marines.

Falluja's Health Damage
Miles Schuman, The Nation

While the North American news media have focused on the military triumph of
US Marines in Falluja, little attention has been paid to reports that US
armed forces killed scores of patients in an attack on a Falluja health
center and have deprived civilians of medical care, food and water.

People power? Or George power?
Mark Almond, New Statesman

Back home the two Georges [Soros and Bush] may be deadly enemies, but
outside America the missionaries of Soros's lavishly funded "Open Society"
foundations march in parallel columns with the Bush administration. Domestic
culture wars don't stop America's big two foreign policy players presenting
a united front abroad when it comes to promoting friends and punishing foes.
A year ago, the two Georges jointly helped topple Georgia's president Eduard
Shevardnadze by putting financial muscle and organisational metal behind his
opponents. Ukraine is the latest country to feel the full force of the two
Georges' displeasure.
