The "Abiotic Oil" Controversy
By Richard Heinberg

In recent months a few of the many web sites that challenge the official
account of the events of 9/11/2001 have also attacked the idea of peak oil.
I would prefer to ignore this controversy-and there are good reasons for
doing so, as some of these web sites lack credibility on other counts;
nevertheless, as these sites are magnets for large numbers of people who are
just beginning to find their way out of the consensus societal trance, they
appear to be doing some palpable harm. I have received at least a couple of
dozen e-mails from sincere people wanting to know my response to claims that
"peak oil" is a scam, and that oil is actually an inexhaustible resource.
So, once and for all, here is my take on the abiotic oil controversy.

The Hydrogen Economy - Energy and Economic Black Hole
By Alice Friedemann, Culture Change

The energy literate scoff at perpetual motion, free energy, and cold fusion,
but what about the hydrogen economy? Before we invest trillions of dollars,
let's take a hydrogen car out for a spin.

All Out of Volunteers: A Draft in the Air?
By Dave Lindorff, CounterPunch

The Republicans are running like mad away from the rumor that's running like
wildfire around on the web in the form of email and blog messages, that the
Bush administration and the Pentagon have a secret plan to reinstate the
Draft after the election.

RINGS IN THEIR NOSES: NADER ON CHOMSKY, ZINN, GOODMAN ET. AL.
by Richard Oxman

I'm sure that most progressive outlets will not make much of a fuss about
Ralph's historically important characterization of The Left at this
juncture...out of habit. But, nonetheless, he's on the mark. A new mark has
been made with our distinguished progressives agreeing to be led by the
likes of Kerry. It's over. There's officially no more democracy.

JUDGING THE INTIFADA
By Hasan Abu Nimah & Ali Abunimah, Electronic Intifada

The fourth anniversary of Israel's violent crackdown on the Palestinian
uprising, which coincided with its latest massacre of Palestinians in the
Gaza Strip, occasioned a number of analyses, many concluding - wishfully -
that the Intifada has been "counterproductive" for the Palestinians, or even
a "failure."

On Barack Obama: Don't Believe the Hype

We have Mr. Perfect Environmentalist with his progressive street cred who
has no problem lobbing DU-tipped missiles at Islamic countries for the crime
of having a set of leaders that America doesn't like and who refuse to bow
down to the dictates of Imperial America. What I found particularly
interesting is that Obama coolly rationalized pre-emptively attacking
Islamic countries because their religious and cultural views make them less
reasonable and more warlike than the former Soviet Union. Progressives have
come a long way from the days when they argued the Indians were less
reasonable and more warlike than civilized and enlightened Europeans!

War Lies Are Piling Up
Ivan Eland, Independent Institute

Even though a mound of evidence keeps accumulating that the Bush
administration exaggerated the threat to fulfill its obsession to invade
Iraq, administration officials keep standing by-in Goebbels-like repetition
of the "big lie"-the need for war.

Dear Dad, Iraq Sucks

My unit was one of the first to Baghdad. I was so scared. Didn't know what
to think. Seeing dead bodies for the first time. People blown in half.
Little kids with no legs. It was overwhelming, the sights, sounds, fear. I
was over there from Jan'03 to Aug'03. I hated every minute. It was a daily
battle to keep my spirits up. I hate the army and my job. I am supposed to
get out next February but will now be unable to because the asshole in the
White House decided that now would be a great time to put a stop-loss in
effect for the army.

The eyes that cannot see beyond Jabaliya and Samarra
By Simon Tisdall, The Guardian

In both Jabaliya and Samarra modern armies with state-of-the-art weaponry
and unanswerable air power attacked residential areas, causing numerous
civilian casualties. In both cases the degree of lethal force used was
grossly disproportionate to the assessed threat. Three US and two Iraqi
battalions - about 5,000 men - were sent against 200-300 insurgents in
Samarra.

Democrat Edwards backs war, austerity in vice presidential debate
By Bill Van Auken, WSWS

The debate Tuesday night between Vice President Richard Cheney and his
challenger Senator John Edwards underscored the fundamental agreement
between the two big business parties on intensifying the war against the
Iraqi people and continuing the policy of global militarism pursued by the
Bush administration.

It's Not a Debate When They Agree
by Mark Yu, Left Hook

The presidential debate last Thursday night did not offer any new
perspectives on the November election. Kerry criticized Bush for mishandling
the invasion and occupation of Iraq while Bush continued the effort to
portray Kerry as a flip-flopper. They repeated words and phrases that had
been carefully selected by their professional public-relations teams and
designed for maximum impact on the voting population. The whole setup seemed
more like a fusion of two expensive campaign commercials than a dialogue fit
for a truly democratic society.
