Israel and Racism: Inseparable Allies
By M. Junaid Alam
The history of all hitherto existing anti-Palestinian propaganda is the
history of outright racism. The Israelis and their political allies have
bred and nurtured a malicious beast, kept well-fed on a steady diet of
hatred and contempt for the Palestinian people. It bristles with anger at
the mention of forced expulsions, military occupation, and excessive use of
force. Fangs bare, claws extended, eyes glaring, it aims to scare out the
moral consciences of its victims

If the FBI works to shut down independent journalism Web sites that are
critical of U.S. policy, isn't that a story?
By John Hanrahan, Niemanwatchdog.org
Agence France-Presse thought it was news. So did the U.K.'s Guardian
newspaper. Likewise BBC News, which reported that the FBI in cooperation
with U.K. authorities had on October 7 "shut down some 20 sites which were
part of an alternative media network known as Indymedia." But coverage of
this significant, ominous event has thus far drawn almost total silence from
the U.S. news media.

John Kerry and the Democrats' Project for a New American Century
by Roy Rollin, Left Hook
The already infamous Democratic Leadership Council, which master-minded the
Democrats right ward lurch during the Clinton-Gore years, has its own think
tank, the "Progressive Policy Institute" (PPI), which calls for virtually
all of the same things the PNAC does, and in language that is almost
identical to that used by their Republican "rivals." This is hardly
shocking.

Don't Count on it: Ai Vay, What Kind of "Progressive" are You?
by Richard Oxman
When I criticize people like Amy Goodman and Michael Moore, invariably a
number of readers will rise up to point out that they both do much good.
That's undoubtedly true about the former, a debateable point regarding the
latter. In both cases, however, the fact that "bits" of what they do are to
be applauded, are useful to The Left, does not preclude necessary
condemnation...when sins of omission or commission rear their ugly head.

Small Differences, Large Outcomes
Noam Chomsky recently acknowledged there were "small differences" between
Bush and Kerry and that those differences could potentially translate into
"large outcomes." This is hardly a controversial stand. The controversy
stems from how you apply Chomsky's words.

Choose and Lose
I've often heard that if you don't vote you have no right to complain. I
agree with George Carlin that it makes a lot more sense when you turn it
around. "If you vote, you have no right to complain," he says.

Compromise, Hell! - Economic WMD's are Being Used Against Our Own People
by Wendell Berry, Orion Magazine
We are destroying our country -- I mean our country itself, our land. This
is a terrible thing to know, but it is not a reason for despair unless we
decide to continue the destruction. If we decide to continue the
destruction, that will not be because we have no other choice. This
destruction is not necessary. It is not inevitable, except that by our
submissiveness we make it so.

Resisting the war machine and U.S. ecocide
by Jan Lundberg, Culture Change
This is a time of massive denial of the destruction of both the planet's
biosphere and non-mainstream cultures by governments, corporations and the
average consumer. A call for resistance, then, is never more appropriate.
So, what are the possibilities, and what kind of world do we want to build?

FBI Shutdown of Indymedia Threatens Free Speech
In a chilling attack on free speech, U.S. authorities on October 7 seized
two internet servers in London belonging to the independent media network
Indymedia. More than 20 Indymedia sites around the world were taken down as
a result of the raid. The servers were returned on October 14, but no formal
charges have been announced and no explanation has been given for the raid.

Amnesty International: A False Beacon?
By Paul de Rooij, CounterPunch
Consider the title of a recent press release: "Israeli army must respect
human rights in its operations". According to AI, the Israeli depredations
on occupied land are acceptable as long as they "respect" human rights. This
is analogous to recommending that a rapist should practice safe sex. It is
also difficult to imagine that a military occupation could ever be imposed
while observing "human rights".

House Republicans and Democrats Unite in Linking Iraq with 9/11
By Stephen Zunes, FPIF
On the eve of the third anniversary of 9/11, the U.S. House of
Representatives--by an overwhelming, bipartisan majority of 406-16--passed a
resolution linking Iraq to the al-Qaida attacks on the World Trade Center
and the Pentagon. This comes despite conclusions reached by the bipartisan
9/11 Commission, a recent CIA report, and the consensus of independent
strategic analysis familiar with the region that no such links ever existed.

A Draft - One Way or the Other
By J. Douglas Allen-Taylor, Berkeley Daily Planet
If we're having no trouble bringing enough needed new troops into the
military, why is the Pentagon forcing soldiers to stay past their contracted
terms, leaving us with a battlefield potentially sprinkled with demoralized
and disgruntled fighters?

Soldiers Once ... And Young
By Tai Moses, AlterNet
After serving a 12-month tour of duty in Iraq last year, Marine Lance
Corporal Jeff Lucey returned home to his relieved family with no injuries -
or at least none that were visible. "When we didn't see him tremendously
traumatized when he returned, we thought, 'Oh, thank god,'" says his father,
Kevin Lucey. "And then it exploded."

The making of the terror myth
By Andy Beckett, The Guardian
Since September 11 Britain has been warned of the 'inevitability' of
catastrophic terrorist attack. But has the danger been exaggerated? A major
new TV documentary claims that the perceived threat is a politically driven
fantasy - and al-Qaida a dark illusion.
