"Patriotism is a pernicious, psychopathic form of idiocy." - George Bernard Shaw
"Man has no right to kill his brother. It is no excuse that he does so in uniform. He only adds the infamy of servitude to the crime of murder." - Percy Bysshe Shelley
"God Wills It!"
By Uri Avnery, avnery-news
Two shocking manifestos were published this week. Both call for comment. One of them declares that dismantling the settlements in the Gaza Strip is a "crime against humanity". It does not mention that they were set up on the land reserves of a million Palestinians crowded in the tiny strip, and rob them of their scarce water. Their removal, it says, is an "expression of tyranny, evil and arbitrariness". Officers and soldiers are called upon not to take part in this "ethnic cleansing".
Cops and Cameras: Guerrilla Media Grows Up
By Kirsten Anderberg
The Pacific Northwest is a hotbed of cop watch activity. With a vocal anarchist community, eco-defense alliances, and a growing boldness due to organization on the part of activists, places like Eugene and Portland, Oregon, are spawning a strength of Independent Media that is literally leading the nation. From the high quality news website produced by Portland's Independent Media Center (IMC) to Portland's Indy Media Web Radio Collective and their Video Collective, to the Cascadia Media Collective, radicals are learning how to produce professional quality media that rivals, if not outperforms, the mainstream press.
On Civil Liberties Myopia
By the Glorious Revolutionary Federation of Fortune 500 Killers
Some people apparently think awful incursions on Americans' civil liberties began after 9/11 and that things were paradise beforehand during the reign of Clinton the Beloved. The Federation, as usual, has no choice but to inject integrity into the foul deluded minds of liberal rot.
THE VANUNU EPILOGUE
By Am Johal
If East Jerusalem had an unofficial mayor, it would be nuclear whistle blower Mordechai Vanunu. When the church bell rings at noon at the Anglican cathedral of St. George's in East Jerusalem not far from Damascus Gate in the Old City, chances are it's Mordechai Vanunu ringing the bell. From that vantage point, he looks down on the Jerusalem court house where he was originally sentenced to eighteen years in prison for divulging Israel's nuclear secrets.
Doom and gloom? Your perception calls the tune
by Jan Lundberg, Culture Change
To go further than discussing changes in lifestyle is to warn of deadly consequences of too many consumers running up against resource limits in a biosphere with failing life-support systems. This should be considered a biological and sociological question, but is almost always rejected out of hand by the authorities in power. Or, the honest assessment is considered inconvenient for the public and the profitable, global marketplace.

Ninety-three Years of Bombing the Arabs
By Gavin Gatenby, Al-Hayat
In Iraq, few days pass without the U.S. Air Force bombing civilian targets. In a high-profile atrocity in May, a bunch of trigger-happy fly-boys shot up a village wedding in western Iraq, killing 45 guests including many children, and a Baghdad singer loved by millions, but these things happen almost daily in towns like Najaf, Samara and Fallujah, and in other places too far from public gaze to warrant media attention.
Iraq And The Crisis Of Empire
by Roger Burbach, ZNet
Bush declared in his acceptance speech at the Republican convention that he is fighting terrorism abroad "not for pride, not for power," but to protect American lives. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Bush's wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are wars of empire.
Fallujah: an Iraqi Beslan
By Mike Whitney, CounterPunch
Fallujah is an Iraqi Beslan. The only difference is that the cameras aren't rolling. The city of 500,000 is being held hostage by an American leadership who doesn't mind shedding the blood of innocent civilians to achieve their broader political goals. That is the very definition of terrorism.
The Dead End of ABB
By Anthony Arnove, Z Magazine
ABB -- Anybody But Bush -- is one of the most harmful slogans progressives have put forward in decades. The slogan tells John Kerry and the Democrats that they don't need to do anything to win our vote. As the satiric Onion newspaper joked, Kerry can safely run on a "one-point program": that he is not George Bush.
Why George W. Bush is the World's Leading Terrorist
Analysis by TvNewsLIES.org
Is there any doubt at all that the Bush administration committed acts of terrorism when it unlawfully used force and violence against the nation of Iraq to intimidate and coerce its government and the civilian population, in furtherance of the Bush/PNAC political and social objectives? Therefore, by any definition, if George W. Bush is guilty of terrorism, he can accurately be identified as a TERRORIST.
Terrorism Began at Deir Yassin
By James F. Harrington, LA Indymedia
We are constantly reminded by our elected officials (and those who steal their elections) and the pro-Israel filtered media, of the acts of revenge that Palestinian and Muslim groups have committed against the people of Israel, however, we are almost never told about the brutal and inhumane acts of state terrorism that the government of Israel has beeen inflicting against the people of Israel, ever since its inception. For over two thousand years, Jews, Christians and Muslims lived side by side in peace and harmony in Palestine. However, due to the inception of Zionism, this tranquility would come to an abrupt end shortly after the end of the second world war.
Night and fog: Disturbing resonances between regime and reich
By Chris Floyd, The Moscow Times
If you take the general definition of fascism provided by its founder, Benito Mussolini -- "the merger of corporate and state power" -- and apply it to the elements that are coalescing in America at this historical moment, you could hardly find a more apt description of the Bush Regime. Couple that with the Bushists' radical transformation of party politics into a quasi-religious cult of militarism and leader worship, and you have not an equivalence but certainly an ever-deepening resonance with the malevolent spirit that swept Germany and Italy during the first half of the 20th century.
Can It Happen Here?
by Maureen Farrell, Buzzflash
During last spring's Dixie Chick fiasco, columnist Paul Krugman drew parallels between Sinclair Lewis' book burnings and modern CD smashings. "One of the most striking [vehement pro-war rallies] took place after Natalie Maines, lead singer for the Dixie Chicks, criticized President Bush; a crowd gathered in Louisiana to watch a 33,000-pound tractor smash a collection of Dixie Chicks CD's, tapes and other paraphernalia," Krugman explained. "To those familiar with 20th-century European history it seemed eerily reminiscent of. . . . But as Sinclair Lewis said, it can't happen here."
Our dead and injured children
By Ahmed Zakaev, The Guardian
Ten years ago Chechnya had a population of 2 million. Today it is 800,000, and Vladimir Putin has an army of what we estimate to be up to 300,000 Russian soldiers in Chechnya inflicting a regime of terror. Many Chechens are refugees and many others have simply disappeared, often in the night. At least 200,000 Chechen civilians have been killed by Russian soldiers, including 35,000 children. Another 40,000 children have been seriously injured, 32,000 have lost at least one parent and 6,500 have been orphaned. These are figures supported by reports of human rights organisations such as Amnesty International, and we believe they are conservative. This is how Putin's soldiers treat Chechen civilians.
