War Resisters are the Real Heroes

Iraq is full of WMD
By Paul Harris, YellowTimes.org
The United States went to war against Iraq in 2003 on the basis that Iraq was chock-a-block with ''weapons of mass destruction'' (WMD). Eventually, the Americans had to admit they were wrong and they just couldn't find those weapons. Many skeptics suspect the Bush administration lied about the WMDs in Iraq to cover a desire to invade and steal Iraqi oil. Few understand that the United States is still lying. Iraq is full of WMDs, both used and unused, but the Bushoviks and their sycophantic media fail to alert the public because it is the Americans who are using them.

THE HORRORS OF CHECHNYA -- AGAIN!
By Mumia Abu-Jamal
The horrific images emerging from the shattered, gaping ruins of a school in southern Russia, and the catastrophe of over 300 people -- women and children among them -- dead, has become a graphic backdrop for the perpetual media search for reflections of the ephemeral 'war on terror.'

The real story of the...Vietnam Veterans Against the War
By Joe Allen, Socialist Worker
Vietnam Veterans are "quite different from veterans of earlier wars," observed Ralph Nader in 1973--then at the height of his fame as a consumer advocate. No prior war, Nader pointed out, had "witnessed such a moral dissent by soldiers and new veterans." What was it about the Vietnam War that produced this high level of opposition within the military? And what role did this resistance and organizations like VVAW play in ending the war in Vietnam?

Drugs and Schooling: The Meaning of State Education
by Sheldon Richman, FFF
What do government schooling and the mislabeled "war on drugs" have in common? Both are primary mechanisms of social engineering, each designed to subordinate the individual to the bureaucratic state. As such, each should inspire undying suspicion and hostility in everyone who values his life and liberty.

Friends Don't Let Friends Vote!
by Mike Wasdin, Strike the Root
We have all heard the mantra before: "If you don't vote, you can't complain." Well I disagree, I think it's just the opposite: "If you vote, you can't complain." By voting, you are legitimizing the system. You are giving your stamp of approval that you will accept the outcome because you agreed to it. If it does not turn out like you had hoped, you have no right to complain, because that would make you a sore loser.

Incident on Haifa Street
Tom Engelhardt, TomDispatch
Are there any statistics from Iraq in recent weeks which don't indicate trouble? Oil production, which Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz once swore would fund the reconstruction of a democratic Iraq, is now crippled and well below prewar levels, while attacks on oil pipelines and facilities have risen sharply; American deaths are on the rise (53 for just over half of September) as are the numbers of our wounded, as are attacks on American troops, which are now averaging more than 80 a day, "four times the number of one year ago and 25 percent higher than last spring"; while the strains on American Guard and Reserve units, being called up ever more frequently, grow greater by the week...

The Spoils of Another War: Five Years after Nato's Attack on Yugoslavia, its Administration in Kosovo is pushing through Mass Privatization
by Neil Clark, The Guardian
'Wars, conflict - it's all business," sighs Monsieur Verdoux in Charlie Chaplin's 1947 film of the same name. Many will not need to be convinced of the link between US corporations now busily helping themselves to Iraqi state assets and the military machine that prised Iraq open for global business. But what is less widely known is that a similar process is already well under way in a part of the world where B52s were not so long ago dropping bombs in another "liberation" mission.

Your Media is Killing You
By William Rivers Pitt, Truthout
The American mainstream television news media, in whole and in part, has catastrophically failed the American people and is singularly responsible for the untimely deaths of tens of thousands of innocent people.

The Arctic: Earth's Early Warning System
By J.R. Pegg, Environment News Service
The Inuit are already suffering dramatic changes to their Arctic environment, warns a native leader. And as goes the Arctic, so goes the Earth.
