The Face of War
By Gabriele Zamparini

While millions of people all over the world were demonstrating and
organizing to stop this slaughter, the "supreme international crime" was
being prepared by the corporate media months before the invasion officially
started. And it wasn't just the FOX News and the other Murdoch's gems of
journalism. The "liberal" (sic!) media were adding their candid voice,
singing the 'liberation of the oppressed Iraqis'. So full of nobility!

If you can't shoot the messenger, lock him up
Siddharth Varadarajan, The Hindu

President Bush's alleged threat to bomb Al Jazeera shouldn't surprise us.
Ever since the NATO attack on Yugoslavia, the U.S. has looked at the media
it can't control as the "enemy." If there were any doubts about the
authenticity of the Daily Mirror story on President George W. Bush wanting
to bomb the head offices of Al Jazeera, the British government would appear
to have cleared them up by threatening editors with prison if they publish
the text of the confidential memo from which the London tabloid sourced its
account.

IMC-UC: Indymedia as Social Movement
Amy L. Dalton, ZNet

The Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center is not an organization
dedicated to reporting on something happening "over there." Its hundred-plus
volunteers are rooted in the very space where things are happening. And they
are telling their story as they make it.

Rocking the Bus: A Colorado woman takes a stand against arbitrary ID checks
Jacob Sullum, Reason

The first time she was asked to show identification while riding the bus to
work, Deborah Davis was so startled that she complied without thinking. But
the more she thought about it, the less sense it made. That's how Davis, a
50-year-old Colorado woman with four grown children and five grandchildren,
ended up getting dragged off the bus by federal security officers, who
handcuffed her, took her to their station, and cited her for two
misdemeanors. Davis, who is scheduled to be arraigned on December 9, is
risking 60 days in jail to show her fellow Americans that they don't need to
blindly obey every dictate imposed in the name of security.

Wishful Thinking Promoted, Truth Jailed
Karen Kwiatkowski, LewRockwell.com

Sometimes, as in the case of Sgt Kevin Benderman, truth must be jailed.
Benderman told the truth about Iraq and about America, and he is safely
ensconced for a fifteen-month prison term. SSgt Al Lorentz spoke truth, and
he was both bad-mouthed and marginalized, as not a team player and worse.
Captain Ian Fishback tried to do the right thing; not a single West Pointer
stands up beside him, and his career may be over. Isolate, punish, pressure,
torture. It's what Truth deserves, isn't it?

The End Of Copyright
Ernest Adams, Gamasutra

I think we are witnessing the beginning of the end of a major era in world
history. It may take fifty years, it may take a hundred, but the age of
copyright is drawing to a close. I don't know if this is a good thing or a
bad thing, but it's inevitable.

America's Debt Time Bomb
John F. Ince, AlterNet

America's exploding debt is a ticking time-bomb. No one can say for sure
what might trigger a crisis and when the bomb might explode, but this much
is for sure: America's current level of borrowing is unsustainable.
