Keepers at the Gate: He Who Controls Television Controls the Masses
By Manuel Valenzuela
In this age of modernity and technology, where the television monitor has
become the center of the average American household, from cradle to grave
acting as surrogate parent, teacher, role model and as influencer of human
thought, it should come as no surprise that entire populations can be
controlled with such facility and efficiency, turning once thinking humans
into grazing sheeple. For in today's day and age, he who controls television
controls the masses, and he who controls the masses controls the nation.

Robert Fisk Tells All
By Sonia Nettnin
>From the podium Fisk opened a U.S. newspaper and demonstrated basic media
analysis for the audience. As he reviewed a front-page article about Iraq,
Fisk repeated over a dozen references to U.S. officials as the quoted
sources of information. Some audience members laughed. "This is not a joke,
this is very serious," Fisk said. "If this is the reporting we're not going
to report the truth about the Middle East."

"We now have to stop the government stealing our land: without it we will
die"
By Roy Sesana, Right Livelihood Award address, Stockholm, December 2005
They said we had to go because of diamonds. Then they said we were killing
too many animals: but that's not true. They say many things which aren't
true. They said we had to move so the government could develop us. The
president says unless we change we will perish like the dodo. I didn't know
what a dodo was. But I found out: it was a bird which was wiped out by
settlers. The president was right. They are killing us by forcing us off our
land. We have been tortured and shot at. They arrested me and beat me.

2005 - 12/07/05)
Political language, as used by politicians, does not venture into any of
this territory since the majority of politicians, on the evidence available
to us, are interested not in truth but in power and in the maintenance of
that power. To maintain that power it is essential that people remain in
ignorance, that they live in ignorance of the truth, even the truth of their
own lives. What surrounds us therefore is a vast tapestry of lies, upon
which we feed.

Report from the Devastated Front Lines of the Lower Ninth Ward - New Orleans
Mary Beth Appell, Common Dreams
I am here as a volunteer with Common Ground, a free collective medical
clinic in New Orleans set up by residents of New Orleans and staffed by
local and out of town volunteers. I am a Nurse Practictioner in Philadelphia
where I help coordinate a free medical clinic. One road was open to let
people into the neighborhood. People were met by a military checkpoint in
their cars. They had to show proof of residency to be allowed past the
checkpoint. Then they were required to stop by the tent to speak with FEMA,
the EPA, to get their "shots", masks and booties. The whole area was guarded
by armed men in black fleece jackets and sunglasses who work for Blackwater
security, a mercenary group hired by the government.

Corporate Plantation: Political Repression and the Hampton Model
Heavy-handed Repression of Recent Student Activism
John Robinson and Brandon King, Black Commentator
We aim to act not defensively, but counter-offensively in our resistance.
It is not enough to just ask the Administration to leave us alone in this
one instance. We intend to illuminate problems that perennially have
plagued the campus of Hampton and we therefore DEMAND that Hampton
University drop all charges against the five students and change its general
policy toward social justice-oriented groups on campus. We will not accept
this denial of democratic procedure, nor the school's betrayal of the Black
Community. We are black students and we will no longer be cajoled by the
flattery of a dishonest Administration nor proselytized to the ways of the
corporate elite. We will not forget about our people. We will not be
intimidated. Fight not for us, but with us because the actions of the
Hampton Administration and the increasingly frequent campus repression
happening nationally, ultimately threaten us all.

The Silencing of Carlos Delgado
Dave Zirin, The Nation
Sometimes sports mirrors politics with such morbid accuracy you don't know
whether to laugh, cry or hide in the basement. Just as the Bush
Administration shows its commitment to democracy by operating secret
offshore gulags and buying favorable news coverage in Iraq, the New York
Mets have made it clear to new player Carlos Delgado that freedom of speech
stops once the blue and orange uniform--their brand--is affixed to his body.

A dangerous neighbourhood
Noam Chomsky, Khaleej Times
>From Venezuela to Argentina, the hemisphere is getting completely out of
control, with left-centre governments all the way through. Even in Central
America, still suffering the aftereffects of President Reagan's "war on
terror," the lid is barely on. In the southern cone, the indigenous
populations have become much more active and influential, particularly in
Bolivia and Ecuador, both major energy producers, where they either oppose
production of oil and gas or want it to be domestically controlled. Some are
even calling for an "Indian nation" in South America.
