Democracy - or is it the US military - on the march
By William Blum

Imagine if during the Cold War, Hungary had held an "election" under Soviet
occupation, in which the voters did not know the names of the candidates or
what they stood for, and no candidate or party called for the withdrawal of
Soviet troops. The American media would have had a field day poking fun at
this farce.

E.P.A. Nominee Supports Testing of Chemicals on Human Subjects
By Gene C. Gerard

In 2001, the trials considered by the agency gave paid subjects doses of
pesticides hundreds of times greater than levels that E.P.A. officials
considered safe for the general public. The agency evaluated three studies
that year from Dow Chemicals, Bayer Corporation, and the Gowan Company. The
Bayer and Gowan studies were conducted in third-world countries, where
volunteers were more readily available, while Dow conducted their study in
Nebraska.

Connections: How Three Unrelated Books Relate
By Mickey Z.

I recently read "102 Minutes: The Untold Story of the Fight to Survive
Inside the Twin Towers," by Jim Dwyer and Kevin Flynn (book #1)...a detailed
account of the events inside the World Trade Center on the morning of 9/11.
The title refers to the time that elapsed between the first plane hitting
the north tower and the both towers being reduced to rubble. Riveting
reading...as you might imagine. The stories are edge-of-your-seat stuff and
made me wish we had similar books about attacks in other countries. After
all, there are far more victims OF America than victims IN America.

Joe Strupp, Editor & Publisher

A new American University study anonymously surveyed Iraq War correspondents
and confirms what many suspected about widespread self-censorship.

Enter Bono, Stage Right
Derrick O'Keefe, CounterPunch

Though egomania and naivety may well lead him to believe that he can coerce
Wolfowitz to implement more humanitarian policies, Bono's de facto
endorsement of this explicit advocate of imperialism is way beyond the pale.

The Energy Crunch to Come
Michael T. Klare, TomDispatch

The world's known reserves still contain a lot of oil -- approximately 1.1
trillion barrels, by the estimates of experts at the oil major BP -- but
they cannot satisfy rising world demand indefinitely; and so, in the absence
of major new discoveries, we face a gradual contraction in the global supply
of petroleum.

They are afraid of you
John Pilger, ICH

The other day, the Aboriginal filmmaker Richard Frankland said this: "When
you've got a voice, you've got freedom, and when you've got freedom, you've
got responsibility. Negotiating with politicians doesn't work. You've got to
change attitudes." That's the task for all of us here today. It's not an
easy one. In fact, many good people in Australia and other countries believe
their voice cannot possibly be heard: that the forces of bigotry and
violence are far too powerful.

Is Bush's empire coming unstuck in Iraq?
Doug Lorimer, Green Left Weekly

In a March 14 article for the British Guardian, investigative journalist
Naomi Klein pointed out that, as the US is increasingly exposed - "Brand USA
is in trouble'' - as the world's biggest terrorist, it is desperate to
rebrand itself. And the woes of the world's "superpower" go beyond simply
rebranding: the disaster in Iraq may have challenged US President George
Bush's plans for world domination entirely.

Frequently in the global economy, it seems that corporations are able to get

Shocked and awed into 'freedom'
Pepe Escobar, Asia Times

Two years after being shocked and awed into "freedom", freedom on the ground
is a meaningless concept for large swathes of the Iraqi population. Sunnis
and Shi'ites alike tell Asia Times Online of a brutalization of every-day
life.

Noam Chomsky ... still furious at 76
By Alan Taylor, Sunday Herald

We begin by talking about the piece in The American Prospect. "It's the
journal of what they modestly call 'the decent left'," he says, oozing
contempt. "It's kind of moderate social democrat and they see themselves as
embattled. You know, caught between two powerful forces which are crushing
them. One is Dick Cheney, representing the White House, the Pentagon, one of
the most powerful forces in history, and the other one - an equal and
opposite force - is me. Do you think any intellectual or academic in history
has ever received such praise? I mean, it's way beyond the Nobel Prize. I
already got someone to put it on the website. It tells you something about
their attitudes. They're pathetic, frightened, cowardly little people."

Italian agent Calipari: A target of opportunity for US assassins
Wayne Madsen, Online Journal

High-level European intelligence sources report that the 51-year old slain
Italian SISMI military intelligence agent, Dr. Nicola Calipari, killed by
U.S. sharpshooters while accompanying the freed Italian hostage-Il Manifesto
journalist Giuliana Sgrena-to Baghdad International Airport, was a prized
target of opportunity for American assassins because of his knowledge about
past Republican White House ties to Saddam Hussein's nuclear program.
