Ibdaa Youth Dance Across U.S.
By Sonia Nettnin

Ibdaa, which means "to create something out of nothing," is a grassroots
organization that provides social, educational and cultural programs for
over 1,500 youth and women of Dheisheh refugee camp, located outside of
Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank. On less than one-square km of land are
over 11,000 residents - 6,000 of whom are children. Dheisheh is one of 59
refugee camps. In 1948, Israeli forces expelled approximately 750,000
Palestinians from their land. Mid-May marks the Al-Nakba, the Catastrophe
for Palestinians, and the creation of the Jewish state, Israel. In 1949,
people forced to flee from 45 villages west of Jerusalem formed Dheisheh.
The camp began with clusters of refugee tents on jagged terrain. Now,
Dheisheh is a congested sea of stone homes surrounded by razor-wire fences
and concrete wall. "We will never forget our homeland," Ziad Abbas said. "We
have keys to our destroyed houses and we believe they are the keys of our
paradise, the keys of our peace."

An Enemy of The State
Doug Thompson, Capitol Hill Blue

According to a printout from a computer controlled by the Federal Bureau of
Investigation and the U.S. Department of Justice, I am an enemy of the
state. The printout, shown to me recently by a friend who works for Justice,
identifies me by a long, multi-digit number, lists my date of birth, place
of birth, social security number and contains more than 100 pages
documenting what the Bureau and the Bush Administration consider to be my
threats to the security of the United States of America.

WHY IS FRANCE BURNING? The rebellion of a lost generation
Doug Ireland, Direland

To understand the origins of this profound crisis for France, it is
important to step back and remember that the ghettos where festering
resentment has now burst into flames were created as a matter of industrial
policy by the French state.

The Left's (non)Response to the French Riots
Infoshop News

Every day acts of insurgency are taking places throughout the world, and
very rarely if ever do these acts have anything to do with bureaucratic
political organizations. In these actions against capitalism, authority and
oppression people are taking power over their own lives. Burning an SUV,
either as a lone Earth Liberation Front action, or in the middle of a riot
in the French suburbs these insurgents are showing they have as much need
for the political Left as they do the political Right. While the
organizationalists of the world are sitting in their boring meetings trying
to decide how best to enlarge their bureaucracies, everyday rebellions are
happening throughout the world.

A tale of two generals
Eli Stephens, Uruknet.info

Supporters of Powell like to claim that Powell was just being a "good
soldier," but, with apologies to German readers, the proper colloquial term
for Powell's behavior is that of a "good German." A "good soldier" not only
doesn't have to obey illegal orders, it is his obligation to disobey them.
>From Powell's role in covering up the My Lai massacre, to his speech at the
U.N. which even he recognized was filled with "bullshit," Powell has acted
to promote illegal actions; in the latter case, he played a key role in
moving American "establishment" opinion to support the illegal invasion of
Iraq, and the subsequent deaths of tens of thousands of Iraqis and
Americans.

Is there a friendlier option for the post-peak future
Bill McKibben, Orion

Can you feel the mood shifting? I can. A year of spiking speculation about
peak oil and the death of suburbia has rattled lots of Americans. Plenty of
people suddenly feel that real, civilization-shaking change might be around
the next corner. And plenty of them also feel frozen in the headlights,
unsure what, if anything, to do about it. Other than wait.

13, Bisexual, and Fighting Prejudice: Interview with Shea Bryant
M. Junaid Alam with Shea Bryant, Left Hook

In a fair society, Shea Bryant would be considered just another young kid
embarking on her teenage years. But in American society, things turn out
quite differently. Bisexual, 13 years old, and living in Vermont, Shea feels
isolated and frustrated that her bisexuality sometimes provokes fear and
contempt. Through her parents, Shea reached out to Left Hook to seek support
and discuss her experiences.
