Petrocollapse: Social Isolation or Solidarity?
By Jan Lundberg
A bigger reason for my possibly unique stance on growth and reformism is
that I'm promoting fundamental, system-change. The idea of returning to our
species' former, complete reliance on nature during our long prehistory,
instead of relentlessly exploiting nature - at a time of apparent incipient
ecological collapse - and the idea of returning to a real community-based
culture (e.g., tribal), are heresy here in the land of techno-worship. The
Western Civilized world is still revered by those who approve of destroying
nature and driving countless species extinct, or by those who believe
Western Civilization is its own cure. I do not.

Cheney: Prepare for Decades of Mass Murder
By Kurt Nimmo
When Cheney tells us we "must be prepared to fight the war on terror for
decades," what he really means is we must surrender our civil liberties,
consent to 24/7 surveillance, national ID cards, subdermal chips, and other
pervasive aspects of the corporate-plutocratic Panopticon conveying a
"sentiment of an invisible omniscience" in true Orwellian fashion. Cheney
also means the American people must prepare themselves for endless and ever
increasingly brutal violence, both abroad where "vassals" resist Cheney's
version of neocon-neoliberalism and at home where law enforcement officers
are transformed into paramilitary goons, trained and commanded to confiscate
guns and either "evacuate" citizens to concentration camps or quarantine
their neighborhoods as ill-defined (or government concocted) diseases spread
(or do not spread, except by way of corporate media hype).

IN A RIGHT STATE
By SchNEWS
Last week 600 people were stopped and searched in Brighton under Section 44
of the Terrorism Act 2000, during the Labour Party Conference in Brighton.
According to the Home Office, "Stop and search under Section 44 is an
important tool in the on-going fight against terrorism" and that the use of
the powers was "intelligence-led and based on an assessment of the threat
against the UK." But with 600 searches and no terrorists arrested, SchNEWS
reckon that's a pretty poor level of intelligence. So for four days we got a
taste of what black and Muslim communities have been experiencing for years.

Time to re-scale, right-size, and reorganize all the fundamental activities
of daily life
James Howard Kunstler, PetroCollapse speech
We've entered a permanent world-wide energy crisis. The implications are
enormous. It could put us out-of-business as a cohesive society. We face a
crisis in finance, which will be a consequence of the energy predicament as
well as a broad and deep lapse in our standards, values, and behavior in
financial affairs. We face a crisis in practical living arrangements as the
infrastructure of suburbia becomes hopelessly unaffordable to run.

The Scooter-Judy Liaison Dangereuse
Arianna Huffington, huffingtonpost.com
As one source put it: "The Scooter-Judy liaison dangereuse exposes how,
during happier times between them, the darkest heart of the Bush
administration was able to beat freely on the front page of the world's most
important paper, with no hard questions asked." Like O.J. promising to hunt
down the real killers of Ron and Nicole, the Times once upon a time (a year
and five months ago, to be exact) promised "to continue aggressive reporting
aimed at setting the record straight" about the paper's miserable coverage
of the Iraq WMD story. The question is, will any courageous Times reporters
take up that challenge and dig deeper into Miller and Libby's
you-scratch-my-byline-and-I'll-scratch-your-policy relationship?

Muzzled Voices: A federal court decision forces Voices in the Wilderness to
disband
Erin Polgreen, In These Times
After 10 years of delegations, peace activism and non-violent protest,
Chicago-based Voices in the Wilderness (VitW) was silenced on August 12,
when a federal judge ordered the group to pay a $20,000 civil penalty for
delivering medical supplies to Iraq without a permit.

The logic of racism in the age of US imperialism
Luciana Bohne, Online Journal
When the sympathy of ordinary Americans threatened to become seditious
outrage at the government's criminal irresponsibility, the plan to demonize
the victims went into effect, tapping into long-established myths of black
people as rapists and murderers.

Which Rogue Nation?
Andrea Howard, Axis of Logic
The US is now detaining its own citizens without charge or trial. The US is
now incarcerating members of the press for adhering to journalistic
integrity as well as denying entry to the Country by well-established
journalists. Now there is a call to "reconsider" the Posse Comitatus Act,
which prohibits the use of US military forces from engaging in law
enforcement activities in the Nation's communities. Nazi Germany was allowed
to function, in large part, by the silent complicity of its people.

The Deadliest Flu Virus in the World: Made in USA
Bill Sardi, LewRockwell.com
The world is being warned a flu virus might mutate at any moment and render
the planet helpless against its spread. Americans don't need to wait for a
flu virus to mutate. Infectious disease specialists, working in a
semi-secure laboratory at a Midwestern university have already done it ahead
of nature. These American researchers obtained the viral particles from the
H5N1 Spanish flu virus that killed millions worldwide and altered one of its
ten genes, making it far more dangerous and virulent than any influenza
virus in nature.

Pop Goes the Real Estate Bubble
Nicholas von Hoffman, The Nation
The Big One isn't the long-predicted California earthquake or even a
hurricane named Katrina. The genuine big one will arrive with a deafening
pop, the sound of the real estate bubble bursting. In the past few years
there have been plenty of false sightings, but now comes something truly
ominous: a 13 percent drop in Manhattan real estate prices in a mere
three-month period ending October 1. As if that were not bad enough, more
unsettling news of the same nature is reported in Boston, Washington and San
Francisco, the places that have led the national upward zoom in real estate
prices for the past several years.

Has the Age of Chaos Begun?
Mike Davis, TomDispatch
The latest news from scientists laboring in cold climes has been startling.
The expanse of Arctic sea ice has been shrinking in the summer since the
late 1970s, though usually rebounding to near normal levels in the winter.
Until recently. For the last few years, winter ice cover has been shrinking
as well. This will be the fourth consecutive year of record, or near record,
shrinkage of September sea ice in the Arctic. Scientists speculate that a
threshold has been crossed.

Sino-U.S. Energy Competition in Africa
Chietigj Bajpaee, PINR
With oil prices hitting record levels of US$70 per barrel in recent weeks,
major energy consuming countries are engaging in an increasingly heated
competition for energy resources on the world stage. Nowhere is this more
evident than between the United States and China, the world's first and
second largest energy consuming countries respectively.

Study: Euthanizing Right-wing Pundits would Solve Global Warming
EWM (Humor)
The scientific community was stunned today when famed French geophysicist
Jacques Revanche published a study that concludes euthanizing right-wing
talk show hosts would solve the global warming problem. The report sparked a
firestorm of controversy across the nation's airwaves, even as Revanche
sought to downplay its findings. "It's true that if you wanted to stop
global warming, you could, if that were your sole purpose, you could
euthanize every right-wing talk show host in this country, and the global
temperature would go down. That would be an impossible, ridiculous, and
morally reprehensible thing to do, but your temperature would go down."
