Our Neighbor - The Enemy
By Carlos Herrera
The world now knows that impeaching President Bush and prosecuting Rumsfeld,
Powell and the rest who lied their way into war will be the only way for the
U.S. to gain any international credibility. Lies, lies topped off by more
lies and disinformation has been the recipe of this neo-fascist
administration in order to achieve its geopolitical, geoeconomic and
geostrategic goals. It is imperative that the people of the United States
push forward an agenda of impeachment and adjudication for war crimes via
the antiwar movement. Get organized and just do it!

9/11...plus 4
By Mickey Z.
Among the more sad and sordid events and episodes we've witnessed in the
past four years, war has been declared on a tactic (terror), countless
innocents have been killed in Afghanistan and Iraq (with no end in sight),
terror attacks occurred in places like Bali, London, Morocco, and Madrid
(with no end in sight)...plus: the PATRIOT Act, the 9/11 Commission, a
library's worth of books, and far more than any one blogger could catalog.

FEMA Nixes Grassroots Radio Station for Hurricane Evacuees
Sarah Ferguson, Village Voice
Although the effort was trumpeted in the media as an example of grassroots
ingenuity in the face of disaster, local officials with the Federal
Emergency Management Agency have nixed an attempt by Houston activists to
set up a low-power radio station at the Astrodome that would have broadcast
Hurricane Katrina relief information for evacuees.

Business Elite Ethnically Cleanse the Poor in New Orleans
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
Reiss believes there should be a manageable number of poor minimum wage
workers in the new New Orleans-just enough to clean the toilets and sweep
the floors at the new casinos and luxury hotels he envisions. Incidentally,
Bush has set the tone by suspending the minimum pay scale requirements for
federal contractors in New Orleans under the Davis-Bacon Act. It appears
Reiss and the "business elite" would like to set up isolated Bantustans of
impoverished workers and have them shipped in to serve tourists and middle
class fun seekers. Sort of reminds you of South Africa under apartheid

Katrina; relocation or ethnic cleansing?
Mike Whitney, uruknet.info
FEMA has been entirely reshaped under the Bush Administration. It's no
longer designed to meet the needs of a natural disaster but, rather, to
advance the political agenda of the current regime. This is clear by the way
that FEMA employees did everything in their power to undermine relief
operations for the people stranded by Hurricane Katrina. Their orders simply
corresponded with Washington's intention to put the city under federal
control and to forcefully-evacuate the victims to locations around the
Southwest.

FEMA: The Secret Government
Harry V. Martin, GRG
Some people have referred to it as the "secret government" of the United
States. It is not an elected body, it does not involve itself in public
disclosures, and it even has a quasi-secret budget in the billions of
dollars. This government organization has more power than the President of
the United States or the Congress, it has the power to suspend laws, move
entire populations, arrest and detain citizens without a warrant and hold
them without trial, it can seize property, food supplies, transportation
systems, and can suspend the Constitution.

Overkill: Blackwater Mercenaries Deploy in New Orleans
By Jeremy Scahill and Daniela Crespo
Heavily armed paramilitary mercenaries from the Blackwater private security
firm, infamous for their work in Iraq, are openly patrolling the streets of
New Orleans. Some of the mercenaries say they have been "deputized" by the
Louisiana governor; indeed some are wearing gold Louisiana state law
enforcement badges on their chests and Blackwater photo identification cards
on their arms. They say they are on contract with the Department of Homeland
Security and have been given the authority to use lethal force.

Racism, Nationalism and the 'Refugees' Debate
Brian Dominick, New Standard
The term "refugees" should be applied to Americans just the way it has been
applied to Sudanese, Palestinians, Haitians and so many others over the
years. People who believe the term is undignified should be asked what their
bias is against refugees in these other places. People who believe the term
should not be applied to Americans should be asked what puts US citizens
above the term.

The Outer Limits of Empire: Interview with Howard Zinn
I would guess that a very large number of Americans against the war in
Vietnam still believed in the essential goodness of this country. They
thought of Vietnam as an aberration. Only a minority in the antiwar movement
saw it as part of a continuous policy of imperialism and expansion. I think
that's true today as well.

POLICE STATE IN AMERICA: The final levee has given way...
Siddharth Varadarajan, GlobalResearch.ca
Its Guantanamo time for everyone. And since the war on terror has been
described by U.S. officials as "an endless war", the period of incarceration
will also be endless. This is precisely what the Italian scholar, Giorgio
Agamben, means when he says the State of Exception -- which in 'democratic'
countries is meant to be a 'provisional measure' -- has become a normal ,
routine, paradigmatic form of rule.

Bookmarking the Spinelessness of the Democrats
Chuck Munson, Infoshop News
The Democrats have once again shown their true colors. They are still the
party of war, capitalism, imperialism, and really pathetic presidential
candidates. While some Democrats are more outspoken about the war and
occupation, the rest of the party still supports the war (and the Patriot
Act and other attacks on civil liberties).
