Bush-The Man With a SNAFU Plan
By Sheila Samples
FEMA is the Patriot Act on crack. Once its powers are unleashed, Oliver
North's REX 84 "exercise" will become a reality. The Constitution will be
suspended and FEMA will have the right to detain or seize the property of
anyone even suspected of engaging in, or who might be thinking of conspiring
with others to engage in acts of espionage or sabotage. REX 84 also
advocated rounding up and transferring to "assembly centers or relocation
camps" of at least 21 million American Negroes in the event of massive
rioting or disorder, not unlike the rounding up of the Jews in Nazi Germany
in the 1930s.

World Summit, MDGs and Israel
By Sonia Nettnin
The wall, which stands 25-feet high, is an economic strangler to Palestinian
agricultural development because farmers are losing their citrus and olive
groves tended by their ancestors. When they lose their farmland they lose
the income that provides for their families and their way of life. For
instance, when Israeli Forces began construction of the wall in Jayyous, a
town in the West Bank, Israeli bulldozers razed several hundred citrus and
olive trees. Moreover, the farmers lost access to six groundwater wells they
used for farmland irrigation. The wells are on the Israeli side. As a result
of the lack of irrigation approximately 15,000 citrus and olive trees died.
The farmers received no compensation for their agricultural loss.

Update on University of Colorado 's Investigation of Ward Churchill
By Natsu Saito
As you know, for the past seven months Ward Churchill has been under intense
political attack. Having been forced to acknowledge that all of Ward's
"controversial" statements were protected by the First Amendment, the
University of Colorado (CU) has attempted to legitimize its ongoing and
retaliatory investigation by converting it into an intense scrutiny of the
"academic integrity" of his work.

People Tell of Police Abuse, Express Anger at Feds
By David Van Deusen
I can report that the night before, while on patrol with the Guard no more
than a mile away, two local cops from the sheriff's department pulled up to
us. In the darkness they did not notice that a member of the press was
present. I heard them tell the Guardsmen "no one on this street is
innocent." They went on to encourage the Guard to shoot people, and
informed them that they would cover up such events. As they pulled away,
they aimed their PA system at area apartments, blaring the sounds of a woman
screaming.

Bad Blood And High Water
Liz Burbank, ICH
Will we stop being distracted and deceived and allow this depravity to
arouse our humanity and fury, to snap us out of comfortable denial and
disinterest? Will we finally connect the global dots of imperialist terror
from Palestine to Haiti, from Biloxi to Baghdad, from Africa to the Gulf
Coast? If not, what will it take or will we continue being complicit "good
germans"?

Free Kevin Pina!: American Journalist Arrested in Haiti
Justin Felux, CounterPunch
Getting accurate information about what is going on in the impoverished and
embattled country of Haiti is next to impossible. The mainstream U.S.
reporters stationed in Haiti don't even keep up the pretense of objectivity,
printing outright lies from government officials, corrupt police, and
fascist business leaders. Often times they simply parrot the distortions of
the local media, which is largely owned by right-wing elites. However, there
has been one voice that for years has been bringing some semblance of sanity
and balance to American audiences about this country, all while facing
numerous threats and attempts on his life: Kevin Pina.

New Orleans: Dress rehearsal for lockdown of America
Carolyn Baker, Online Journal
Particularly since 9-11, FEMA has been very little about disaster relief and
very much about "population management." Katrina has underscored what the
federal government and virtually all Americans already knew-the chaos that
results from natural disasters. What the federal government knows, but most
Americans don't know is the pandemonium that will result as the consequences
of Peak Oil exacerbate.

Crossing the Rubicon: An Interview with Michael Ruppert
Rob Williams, Toward Freedom
Most people I know have some intuitive sense that the stories told about the
way the world works in our culture of daily "news" (and I use the term
loosely) are suspect. The real stories about power and the ways power is
exercised lie buried beneath the surface. But how deep, to quote The
Matrix's
Morpheus, does this rabbit hole go? For those willing to crawl down the
hole, U.S. investigative journalism has its own Morpheus, and his name is
Michael Ruppert.

US media hails martial law general in New Orleans
Bill Van Auken, WSWS
His agenda was that of the Pentagon, which ordered the city sealed-no relief
in, no evacuees out-until the military could intervene with overwhelming
force to impose law and order and defend private property. He acted on the
basis of plans and doctrines designed not for relief of human suffering, but
suppression of civil unrest. The result was many more needless deaths. All
this is conveniently forgotten in the media's lionizing of the "take-charge"
general.

Race to the Bottom: Slow Katrina evacuation fits pattern of injustice during
crises
Liza Featherstone, Grist
"The economic structure of the city is controlled by old-line wealthy
families and corporations," says Wright, also a New Orleans resident. She
points out that because the well-heeled live on higher ground, they will
have a much easier time moving back than residents of low-lying,
predominantly black communities. "This may sound cold, but I think the
[city's real-estate developers] are doing a break dance right now," Wright
says. "They are really happy to have us gone." Wright and others fear that
the city could be rebuilt as a massive gentrification project, one with no
room for Katrina's displaced.

The Shoestring Economy
Stephen Roach, Morgan Stanley
Never in modern history has the world's leading economic power tried to do
so much with so little. A saving-short US economy has long pushed the
envelope in drawing on foreign capital to subsidize excess consumption. But
now Washington is upping the ante as it opens the fiscal spigot to cope with
post-Katrina reconstruction at the same time it is funding the ongoing war
in Iraq. Could this be a tipping point for America's shoestring economy?

Colin Powell Being Colin Powell
Robert Parry, Consortium News
The ABC interview fits with Powell's life story as a careful military
bureaucrat. From his earliest days as a junior officer in Vietnam through
his acquiescence to Bush's Iraq adventure, Powell repeatedly has failed to
stand up against actions that were immoral, unethical or reckless.
