The Iraq Study Group Study Group
by Zbignew Zingh
Once stripped of its tepid criticisms, the Baker-Hamilton ISG report looks
like an attempt to stuff the evil genie of Mr. Bush's policies back into the
bottle of a more subtle Bismarck-Metternich style of empire. Mr. Baker and
his groupies clearly are nostalgic for the day when his class of people
could achieve dominance while keeping up the pretenses of goodness and
democracy for public consumption. They recoil from the blunt, naked
aggression of the Bush Administration which Mr. Baker et. al. equate with
the boorish behavior of crass amateurs and thugs. Baker et. al. prefer the
more nuanced, more subtle exercise of power, like the true aristocrats they
are, who keep their white gloves clean while the blood is spilled off-stage
and out-of-sight by covert military operations.

Saying goodbye to my "Fargo" accent
by Robert Jensen
In the course of his talk, Clark made reference to the fact that in the
United States, English is a foreign language. That remark set off in my head
a chain of thoughts that left me resolved to never again joke about a North
Dakota accent. Let's start with the obvious: While some of the indigenous
people killed or displaced by Europeans and their descendants learned to
communicate in English with the settler-colonizers, they did so in a second
(or third, fourth, or fifth) language. English is not a native language in
the territory we now call the United States -- it's the language of a
colonizing people who pursued a genocidal strategy to acquire that territory
and its resources.

Deleting Irony and Hiding Truth: Recent Reflections on the New York Times
and the Narrow Spectrum of Debate
Paul Street, ZNet
It's like Noam Chomsky says: if you want to see how shockingly narrow the
spectrum of acceptable political debate and ideological contestation is in
the U.S., read the "liberal" New York Times. It's in the "leftmost" sections
of dominant corporate media that you best discern where the business
community sets the outer parameters of permissible discourse.

The Terror of Television
Alex R. Knight III, Strike the Root
Another contention of Hitler's, as he so masterfully demonstrated, was that
the power of suggestion was a terrible weapon in the hands of anyone who
knew how to utilize it to maximum effect. Television, in the modern world,
is every single bit that weapon. One need only peruse the propagandist drek
of which 90% of television media is comprised: CNN, MSNBC, ABC News, Fox
News ("Fair And Balanced!" Right. About as much so as a wrinkly
octogenarian hag on her second fifth of Jack Daniels.), CBS. Take a drive
through suburbia sometime at night. Anywhere, USA , will suit just fine.
Watch the blue glows through all the windows while inundated minds of every
stripe and walk of life absorb the garbage filtering outward like a cancer,
stifling meaningful controversy, erasing independent thought.

World's Largest Science Teachers' Organization Awash in Denials
John Borowski, Truthout
The hypocrisy of the NSTA is a stark and bold reaffirmation of the
incredible stranglehold corporate interests have, not only in the media, the
Congress and so many walks of life: they are now trying to manufacture
consent amongst our youngest citizens in school.

The Right to Pursue Powerdown: Seaking alternative lifestyles post-peak
Richard Embleton (Oil, be seeing you blog)
Those unwilling to adhere to the practices and tenets of mainstream society
seem invariably to be considered a threat to that society, a threat that
must be dealt with harshly. The presumed threat, however, generally exists
only in the collective mindset of the mainstream society. Most often the
splinter group seeks only to follow their own beliefs and practices in
freedom. And almost invariably the mainstream society around them will not
accept their right to do so.

Industrial Agriculture & the E. Coli Outbreak
Jason Godesky, Anthropik Network
This is not a question of washing vegetables or even the unhealthy nature of
fast food. The E. coli is being absorbed right into the vegetables in their
irrigation water. This is the price we pay for intense, concentrated,
industrial agriculture. At work are the perverse forces of economic markets,
not the forces of nature. The U.S. food production system has been
fined-tuned to maximize profits for a small group of farmers, often
corporations, holding vast acres of land.

Indigenous Peoples were disposables to nuclear industry
Brenda Norrell, Infoshop News
Arriving from every region of the earth, their stories are the same. They
tell of the machinations of the global nuclear industries, corporations
leaving behind trails of radiation, cancer, birth defects and death for
Indigenous villagers. Stolen as an infant from her birth family, one
Australian Aboriginal woman now speaks out against the massive expansion of
a uranium mine that threatens her people with more misery in South
Australia.

Afghanistan the Bloodiest Field for Slaughtering Human Rights
Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA)
Five years ago, America and their allies attacked Afghanistan in the name of
bringing "Human Rights", "Democracy", and "Freedom" to the war-torn country.
The Taliban regime fell and Hamid Karzai's puppet regime, which included the
world-known Northern Alliance criminals or as UN envoy Mahmoud Mestri said,
"the bandit gangs", took over in the name of a fake democracy. However,
today, the deceitful policies of Mr. Karzai and his Western guardians have
brought Afghanistan to a very critical situation in which disaster is a
ticking time bomb that can explode any minute. Treason and mockery have
efficiently been used under the name of "democracy" and "freedom" in these
five years and the human rights situation in Afghanistan is a product of the
painful deception of the warlord led government.

More Dangerous Than Crack--Death By Coke
Joshua Frank, CounterPunch
Despite the barrage of marketing to the contrary, sales pitches, and
misinformation, consumption of soda has been directly linked to both obesity
as well as type 2 diabetes. Soft drinks are packed full of sugar and refined
carbohydrates, both of which are undeniably correlated to these factors.
Type 2 diabetes is also associated with a poor diet that is laden with
high-fructose corn syrup and low in fiber. Research indicates that soft
drinks largely contribute to this growing epidemic, with high school and
college age kids being the most likely to consume sugar laden soda beverages
on a regular basis.

Freedom Song: Building an Icon Out of Kuwasi Balagoon
Jessica Loughery, Philadelphia City Paper
On Dec. 13, 1986, Kuwasi Balagoon died in prison of pneumocystis carinii
pneumonia, an AIDS-related illness. He was a bisexual man and a part of the
queer liberation movement. A Black Panther who was a defendant in the
Panther 21 case. A member of the Black Liberation Army. A New Afrikan
Anarchist. And yet his name is nowhere to be found in our history books.
