Facilitating Fascism
by Zbignew Zingh

What kind of doctors has the United States trained who stand by idly while
prison guards force-feed prisoners in Guantanamo Bay with plastic pipes
shoved down the noses of the shackled and tortured? What kind of
psychologists have we educated who assist the Pentagon inventing new ways to
torture men and women, breaking their minds without breaking their skin; who
help create government propaganda, plant false news stories, devise
"psy-ops" to mislead us all? What kind of lawyers are these who work for the
Department of "Justice", the "Defense" Department, the Pentagon or the White
House, who waste their careers finding legal loop-holes justifying torture,
deceit, eavesdropping and imprisonment without charge? What manner of
scientists, hardware and software engineers have we graduated who dedicate
their intelligence and creativity to devising deadlier weapons, more
secretive ways to snoop, and more innovative ways to kill? What types of
ministers, priests, rabbis, chaplains and reverends are these who mutter
empty palliatives to their congregations, run through empty chants and
mindless prayers and paeans to Love and Holiness in pursuit of a Life to
Come, while today, right now, human carrion burns in their names, and naught
do they do at all? What types of writers, journalists, editors, reporters,
actors, what types of men and women are these who slavishly say and write
and do as they are told knowing that they spread lies and deception and
blather?

Obedient Slaves Have Nothing to Fear
By Kurt Nimmo

Get used to surveillance gadgets mounted above every intersection or inside
every store. Soon enough, surveillance cameras will be "on downtown streets
and in apartment complexes, shopping malls and even private homes to fight
crime during a shortage of police officers," as presaged by Houston Police
Chief Harold Hurtt. The eventual idea-divorced from crime or security-is as
Orwell envisioned it some sixty years ago.

Stone Age Freedom
Jason Godesky, Anthropik Network

The Stone Age is making a comeback. It doesn't matter if we want it or not.
Collapse is inevitable; civilization is unsustainable, and it must end soon,
one way or another. The key to survival is to separate ourselves from our
doomed civilization, to ensure that when it dies, we are no longer dependent
on it.

It's the end of the world as he knows it and Randy White feels fine (sort
of)
Ian Demsky, Willamette Week

Over the past year or so, White, 29, has gotten serious about throwing off
the trappings of his old lifestyle, the habits that drove him to use more
and more of the stuff, but it hasn't been easy. By his own admission, White
is still hopelessly hooked. It's hard, he confides, when almost everyone you
know-even your wife-is strung out, too. Randy White is addicted to oil. Then
again, he would say, so are the rest of us. At least he's trying to do
something about it.

Cantarell - An Omen?
Tom Whipple, Falls Church News-Press

There are a lot of bad things out there waiting to bite as the world moves
towards peak oil- Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Venezuela, China, globalization, and
hurricanes to name a few. Last week a new bogeyman arose - super fast oil
depletion.

Early Humans On The Menu

You wouldn't know it by current world events, but humans actually evolved to
be peaceful, cooperative and social animals, not the predators modern
mythology would have us believe, says an anthropologist at Washington
University in St. Louis.

Bush's Mysterious 'New Programs'
Nat Parry, Consortium News

Not that George W. Bush needs much encouragement, but Sen. Lindsey Graham
suggested to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales a new target for the
administration's domestic operations -- Fifth Columnists, supposedly
disloyal Americans who sympathize and collaborate with the enemy.

The Devil Is in the Lack of Details: The Defense Department's Media
Contracts
Diane Farsetta, PR Watch

Although they've done their best to keep their spinning from public
scrutiny, several major incidents have exposed the Bush administration's
manipulation of news media: The "sell job" for the invasion of Iraq. Payola
pundits Armstrong Williams, Maggie Gallagher and Michael McManus. Stooge
"reporter" Jeff Gannon / James Guckert. Video news releases determined to be
covert propaganda by the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office (GAO).

Mainstream Media an Instrument of U.S. Foreign Policy
Garry Leech, Colombia Journal

A sequence of events transpired over the past few days that perfectly
illustrate the mainstream media's role as propagandists for the U.S. and
Colombian governments. These events consisted of the media's coverage of the
massacre of six family members in Colombia and the release of a United
Nations human rights report. The problem is rooted in the media's
over-reliance on official sources, despite being fully aware of a long
history of lying and manipulation by those sources. The corporate media's
insistence on continuing this practice makes evident its willingness to
operate as an instrument of U.S. foreign policy by providing disinformation
and outright lies to the U.S. public.

Declassification in Reverse: The Pentagon and the U.S. Intelligence
Community's Secret Historical Document Reclassification Program
Matthew M. Aid, National Security Archive

The CIA and other federal agencies have secretly reclassified over 55,000
pages of records taken from the open shelves at the National Archives and
Records Administration (NARA), according to a report published today on the
World Wide Web by the National Security Archive at George Washington
University. Matthew Aid, author of the report and a visiting fellow at the
Archive, discovered this secret program through his wide-ranging research in
intelligence, military, and diplomatic records at NARA and found that the
CIA and military agencies have reviewed millions of pages at an unknown cost
to taxpayers in order to sequester documents from collections that had been
open for years.

OIL FOR THE KILLING MACHINE - THE BBC ON IRAQ
Media Lens

On its main evening news last week, the BBC's royal and diplomatic
correspondent, Nicholas Witchell, reported from Baghdad on a video which
showed (not "appeared to show" as many journalists insist) British troops
beating a group of young Iraqis. This was unfortunate, Witchell observed,
because the foreign troops in Iraq are there "in an essentially peacekeeping
role". Witchell would doubtless reject out of hand the suggestion that
Soviet troops occupying Afghanistan in the 1980s were there "in an
essentially peacekeeping role". Likewise, the Iraqi troops occupying Kuwait
in August 1990. The same unthinking prejudice was exhibited in a Guardian
leader on the British abuses.

The Bourse Conspiracy
Russ Wellen, Freezerbox

Trying to prevent oil from being transacted in euros looks more and more
like the act of an administration desperate to stall gathering worldwide
momentum toward the euro. After all, Russia may be on the verge of pricing
its oil in euros. Meanwhile, in a speech before the House of Representatives
on February 15, Texas Congressman Ron Paul gave a crash course on how
printing money that's not backed by gold has put us on a collision course
with the euro. "Using force," he said, "to compel people to accept money
without real value can only work in the short run."

Vaccinating For Profit - From Cradle to Coffin
Evelyn Pringle, Media Monitors

Over the past twenty years, our government has facilitated a nationwide
experiment on our country's youngest citizens via the Mandatory Childhood
Vaccine Schedule, and the tragic results of the experiment can be equally
credited to the joint efforts of compromised regulatory officials and
politicians, and the pharmaceutical industry that stood to make billions. In
a perverse twist of fate, the vaccine program has evolved into a grand
profiteering scheme, second only to the military industrial complex's war on
terror fiasco. Instead of prevention, the program has resulted in an
epidemic of serious health problems for an entire generation of children and
at the same time, produced an infinite market expansion for the sale of
other prescription drugs, for the scheme's developers.

I Glorify in Revolution! So arrest me damn you!
William Bowles, williambowles.info

In actuality, running the risk of being thrown in the slammer for
'Glorifying terrorism' is the least of our problems as the 'Prevention of
Terrorism Act' is already wreaking havoc on the citizens of this 'cradle of
democracy [sic]. From shouting out "nonsense" at the Labour Party Conference
to attending film festivals or wearing a t-shirt that disses Blair, we are
all subject to arrest and/or detention under the Prevention of Terrorism
Act. And it's clear that the police have been given orders to use it to
intimidate and harass anyone who speaks out or behaves in a way likely to
bring disrepute on our 'glorious' leaders.

Slicing Away Liberty: 1933 Germany, 2006 America
Bernard Weiner, The Crisis Papers

What happened in Germany in the 1920s and '30s can teach us much about how a
nation in a few years can lose its freedom in incremental slices as a result
of a drumbeat of never-ceasing propaganda, strong-arm tactics, government
snooping and harassment, manufactured fear of "the other," and wars begun
abroad with the accompanying rally-'round-the-flag patriotism.

Danish Cartoons: Racism Has No Place on the Left
Deepa Kumar, MR Zine

I've just about had it. I cannot watch one more episode of the Daily Show
which makes racist jokes about Arabs and Muslims. I am sick and tired of
people who see themselves as part of the left writing articles that put a
liberal gloss over what is, in essence, a right-wing "clash of
civilizations" argument. And I am fed up with an anti-war movement in the
United States that will do nothing to defend Muslims against all the attacks
they have faced both domestically and internationally.

New television show explodes myths: "In Justice" dramatizes reality of US
criminal justice system
Debra Watson, WSWS

It is remarkable that ABC's new mid-season drama "In Justice" is on
television at all. By virtue of its underlying premise, that many innocent
people are in prison as the result of official malfeasance, the program is
at odds with every police drama on US television today. Until "In Justice"
debuted on New Year's Day 2006, the glorification of the draconian
law-and-order culture in the US was virtually the only approach available on
network television. In the detective and police dramas that litter nightly
prime time schedules, hardened cops, clever detectives and stern courts and
prosecutors work unfailingly to bring in the guilty and mete out severe
punishment to society's criminal element.

Cindy Sheehan Interview
David Barsamian, The Progressive

The first thing that strikes you about Cindy Sheehan is she is genuine.
There is no artifice, power play, or lexical wizardry. She is without

beyond intellectual formulations to get to the heart of the matter.
