You Can't Go Home Again
By Sheila Samples
January 5th was the bloodiest day in Iraq since Bush's illegal invasion. As
many as 140 were killed, including 11 US servicemen, and many more injured.
Bush responded by suddenly summoning all living secretaries of state and
defense to the White House for a skull session and photo op on what to do in
the Middle East before he is completely overtaken by even more catastrophic
success.

Ready, Aim, Cease-fire
By Remi Kanazi
The people of Gaza are living under occupation. The prison quarters
diminished as Israel implemented "no-go" areas in the northern Gaza Strip
and took military control. Israel remains firmly in control of the airspace
as well as the sea and all borders except the European Union monitored Rafah
border, which according to Israel can be shut down at any time. All the
while, human rights reports come and go, asserting that the harsh conditions
of "post disengagement" are worsening rather than improving. Poverty,
malnutrition, and unemployment are on the rise, while new "peaceniks" like
Ehud Olmert are ushered into the Kadima party on feathered pillows to bring
Israel to new heights.

Orwell Estate To Sue President Bush: "1984" Being Used By White House
Illegally
Steve Young, American Politics Journal
"We've felt that since its beginning, this administration has stolen much of
its policy from Mr. Orwell's writings," said attorney Will Bilyalotz,
"expressly '1984' and 'Animal Farm.' In some cases -- for example, the
illegal surveillance of its own citizens -- this administration has lifted
passages word for word from '1984.' Simply changing the year does not
protect the president from copyright laws."

Corporate Media Standards Scrape Bottom
Brian Dominick, New Standard News
CNN was exemplary in its willingness to shove a camera -- flood light and
all -- right into the faces of worried, and later grieving, family members
and shout questions at them, as if their private feelings or thoughts are
even remotely our business. On last night's show, Cooper tooted his own
horn, saying that family members had told him they were glad the media was
there. Cooper informed his audience that was because otherwise, the families
would have had to deal with their emotions all alone. A different, less
egotistical interpretation might conclude that families were glad the media
was there to document the behavior of the mining company and regulatory
officials who failed them so tragically. Just imagine how much more grateful
for journalists' presence those families might be had reporters spent half
as much time harassing officials as they spent prying accounts of "emotions"
and "hopes" out of the victims' loved ones.

Let Ernst Zundel and David Irving Go Home
Press Action
Ernst Zundel and David Irving may be filled with hate, but they should not
be treated as criminals. The German and Austrian governments are the ones
who have committed outrageous crimes by jailing these men for voicing their
opinions about the Holocaust.

The Opposite of Good is Apathy
Cindy Sheehan, Common Dreams
This is what you are allowing your government to do in your name: Detain and
torture prisoners without due process. Use chemical weapons on other members
of humanity. Spy on Americans without a court order (I hope my conversations
put them in a coma of boredom). Carpet bomb cities filled with human beings
like yourselves. Destroy the infrastructure of other countries. Destroy the
infrastructure of American cities. Cut taxes on the rich while pouring money
and blood into the thirsty sands of the Middle East. Decimate our treasury.
Rape the environment. Et cetera, et cetera, ad nauseum. Hillary Clinton told
me that the "wheels of government grind slowly." This is a tired cliché and
it is unacceptable blather while the war machine is grinding the bones of
our children.

Brain Fever: The Bush Regime's War on American Soldiers
Mark Benjamin tells an important story of how the Pentagon denigrates,
humiliates and misdiagnoses soldiers with brain injuries sustained during
their term as cannon fodder for George W. Bush's "war of choice" - as the
"muscular liberals" like to call it - in Iraq. The story illustrates once
again the paradox that pervades the Bush Regime: They love war, they love
military power - but they hate soldiers, the actual human beings who do
their dirty work for them. They regard them as mere biological material to
be used then discarded. They despise and disrespect them, as all overseers
despise and disrespect their slaves and coolies (while loudly proclaiming
their tender, paternal care for them). It's how these big-time criminals
sleep at night - by dehumanizing everyone they harm by their depradations.

The Man (and the System) behind the Mining Murders
Andrew Pollack, MR Zine
Some may see Ross's story as one of a particularly avaricious man savaging
the workforces of one industry after another. More accurately, however, it
is a story of the system whose cyclical nature creates the need for men (and
women) like Ross, who drive its component parts through inevitable
reorganization required by the destruction of old, and the creation of new,
capital (concentrating and centralizing it in the process). His operations
have been variously called distressed investing or vulture investing, and
Ross himself a bottom feeder. Indeed, he slashes jobs, wages, and benefits,
but that is inevitable under capitalism -- unless there is resistance.

The Sub Motorcycle Diaries: On the Road with the Zapatistas
Ramor Ryan, CounterPunch
Under the moniker Delegate Zero, Marcos launches a six month tour of all
Mexico, unarmed and apparently alone, not to speak or run for office but ¨to
listen to the simple and humble people who struggle." This new political
initiative, called the Other Campaign, is intended to influence Mexico's
July presidential election. The Zapatistas will reach out to anti-capitalist
and leftist organizations across the country, creating a nation wide
movement that will turn the national political agenda "upside down".
Rejecting the suggestion that they were leaving the armed struggle and
entering the political mainstream, the Zapatistas say they are conducting a
campaign "from below, for below", focusing on "a radical transformation of
the Mexican political system".

2006: The Peak Oil Crisis
Falls Church News-Press
During the past year, the average price of oil increased 33 percent almost
matching the 34 percent increase of 2004. If one wants to think of peak oil
just as steadily increasing prices, then we are clearly on our way. Since
2001, oil prices have nearly tripled.

New Orleans Homeowners Fight to Save Homes from Bulldozers
Michelle Chen, New Standard News
To concerned residents, the demolition plans reflect the government's desire
to create a whiter, more affluent New Orleans by shutting low-income
minority communities out of the reconstruction process, both physically and
politically. The city says the houses are unsalvageable and must be
demolished for safety reasons. To prevent the demolitions, a coalition of
hurricane survivors, activists and public-interest lawyers has filed a
lawsuit, charging that by destroying properties without notifying owners or
seeking approval through a standard court procedure, the city would violate
due process rights.

Oh, baby: Are the childfree a fast-growing, misunderstood movement - or just
a bunch of mean ol' kid haters?
Sarah Klein, Metro Times
Deciding not to bear the fruit of your loins is nothing new, but within the
last five years the childfree community has begun to band together, largely
through online support groups. The more vocal members of the community have
drawn headlines with their sometimes scathing diatribes against "ankle
biters," yet the range of childfree people is as varied as the range of
those who choose to parent, running the gamut from caring, intelligent
individuals to petty assholes.
