Osama's Book or Oprah's Book?
Rosemarie Jackowski, Press Action

The queen of trivia does it again. Am I the only person on the planet who is
outraged with recent Oprah shows? Usually the trivial nature of the topics
she chooses is enough to liquefy brain cells. That is not the worse of it.
Recently, she seemed to enjoy her one-upmanship in the book scandal with
author James Frey. The frying of Frey was troubling because there are more
important lies out there. Hey Oprah, remember the big WMD lie? What about
the lies about the numbers of homeless among us? What about the lies about
the causes of poverty in the USA? What about the lies about the number of
civilians killed in Iraq? Killed kids should at least rate a nod from
someone in the U.S. media.

Imminent Peril, Part 2
Dale Allan Pfeiffer, Pfeiffer's Blog

The prevalent economic system is predicated on never ending growth, where
prosperity requires continuous growth in production and consumption.
However, this growth must take place on a planet with limited resources and
carrying capacity. Economists are completely blind to these limits. They
illogically argue that as known reserves of vital resources grow short, the
increasing value of the resource in question will spur the discovery of
additional reserves and render previously uneconomical reserves economical.
When cornered, economists point towards scientific and technological
innovations which they are sure will come to our rescue. They ignore the
scientists and engineers who warn that we cannot expect such breakthroughs
alone to solve our problems. They argue that we need basic changes in our
lifestyle. We need to wean ourselves from over-consumption, emphasizing
sustainability instead.

If This Be Treason
Patricia Goldsmith, Dissident Voice

A lot of us actually are up in arms over the fact that our
commander-in-chief/war president/unitary executive has officially declared
himself above the law -- and us below it. From henceforth, the intent and
application of all laws he signs will be decided by his signing statement,
not the law's actual language. He will continue to take all steps necessary
to protect the nation, and those steps will always be constitutional and
within the law, because, as the Unitary Executive, he and he alone will
decide what the Constitution and the law say.

The Farcical Definition at the Heart of the War on Terrorism
James Bovard, FFF

The Bush administration, in its war on terror, stresses that anyone who aids
and abets a terrorist is as guilty as the terrorist. By this standard, the
U.S. government was guilty of enabling the Indonesian government to
terrorize the Timorese people. The Timorese victims of U.S.-backed
aggression received far less than 1 percent of the attention than have
American victims of terrorist attacks. The U.S. government currently
bankrolls and arms many foreign regimes that terrorize their own people,
including Colombia, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan.

The Friendster Effect
Kara Jesella, AlterNet

Social networking websites like MySpace, Flickr and Friendster are more
popular than ever. But are they a valid tool for progressive political

It's Still the Occupation...!
Anisa Abd el Fattah, Media Monitors

Anyone who thinks that Palestine's recognition of Israel will bring peace in
this conflict is mistaken. The PLO recognized Israel, and a few months later
Israel entered Jenin and massacred hundreds, if not thousands of
Palestinians. The UN refused to investigate the Jenin massacre, or to issue
a formal report as it has in the Hariri case in Lebanon because it didn't
want to embarrass Israel. Fatah didn't understand that if you recognize
Israel's right to exist before Israel defines exactly where it wants to
exist, it is similar to saying that Israel has the right to exist wherever
it chooses, or wherever it can.

Unlike Bush, bin Laden Keeps His Word
Paul Sperry, Antiwar.com

All told, 20 nations made bin Laden's hit list. "Of the 20 nations al-Qaeda
threatened, 18 have been attacked - a 90 percent correlation," Scheuer says.
His assessment included strikes on Bali, Casablanca, Istanbul, and Madrid,
but not on London, which came after his book was released. So make that 19
nations hit out of 20 forewarned - a 95 percent correlation, making al-Qaeda
at once the world's most effective terror network and the most predictable.
Only, you'd never know it from this president, who engages in false bravado
about breaking "the back of al-Qaeda" instead of taking an honest
measurement of the enemy, who is still lethal and poised to strike again.
