The Conventional Wisdom of Warmonger William Arkin
By Mark Hand
William Arkin, a regular guest on Amy Goodman's Democracy Now!, is gung-ho
about the United States threatening Iran with invasion if Iran does not
follow Washington's orders. Arkin, the U.S. Left's favorite military
analyst, writes in today's Washington Post that "the diplomatic effort
directed at Iran would be mightily enhanced if that country understood that
the United States is so serious about deterring the Iranian quest for
nuclear weapons that it would be willing to go to war to stop that quest
from reaching fruition."

Forget the Middle East: North America Harbors the World's Most Dangerous
Terrorists
By Jason Miller
What could be more threatening or violent than a nuclear attack? What could
be more coercive than the US imposition of its will, culture, and ruthless
economic agenda on a global populace like a domineering father abusing his
cowed children? Employing terrorist tools of intimidation, coercion and
threats of violence, the United States consistently sets the political and
social objectives for the rest of the world.

KILLING FIELDS: GENOCIDE IN IRAQ
By David Model
Pol Pot imposed a revolutionary ideology on Cambodia so radical and rigid
that if the countenance of a terrorized Cambodian, indoctrinated through
coercion, betrayed even a hint of skepticism, that person would be summarily
executed. President George W. Bush seems to have virtually achieved this
kind of control in America without the threat of force as evidenced by the
meekness of the media, the Democratic pseudo-opposition and the hesitant
moderates within the Republican Party. Not only is Congress unwilling to
investigate possible impeachment charges, they refuse to even censure him
despite all the lies, cover-ups and illegal activities, not to mention war
crimes. The accusation that Bush has violated the UN Charter, Geneva
Conventions, the Convention on the Use of Some Conventional Weapons and the
Convention on Torture is paradoxically inadequate to describe the severity
of the crimes against humanity perpetrated by this president. By adding to
the war crimes committed by his father, the former President George H. Bush,
and President Clinton, President George W. Bush has reached the apogee of
war crimes, namely genocide.

Call a Spade a Spade
By Remi Kanazi
How long is a sane man expected to sit on his hands while his enemy slaps
him in the face? The Palestinian people have endured a prolonged aggression
by a pariah state, and yet the world not only expects them to sit on their
hands, the world blames them for it.

The Moral Quandary Well-Meaning Imperialists Face or How Does One Convince
the Occupied That This Mayhem is for Their Own Good?
By Ron Jacobs
Feldman, like so many other humanitarian imperialists, seems to honestly
believe that
the countries of the world would be better off if they were all like the
United States-corporate capitalist republics. More dangerously, he also
seems to think that the US has a moral imperative to transform as much of
the world's nations into such entities.

THE PARADIGM IS THE ENEMY: The State of the Peak Oil Movement at the Cusp of
Collapse
Michael C. Ruppert, From the Wilderness
Perhaps the greatest flaw in the Peak Oil movement's current operating
paradigm is that, a part of the movement at least, instead of building
lifeboats in the face of an immediate disaster, is delusionally focused on
trying to build alternative-powered luxury liners that operate just like the
paradigm we as a species need to be abandoning.

"Opting out" is a key term for Joel, who believes that it would be a fatal
mistake to "try to sell a connected, holistic, ensouled product through a
Western, reductionist, Wall Street sales scheme"-by which (I think) he means
selling to big organic supermarkets like Whole Foods. As far as Joel is
concerned, there isn't a world of difference between Whole Foods and
Wal-Mart.

The Real First Casualty of War
John Pilger, ICH
During the 1970s, I filmed secretly in Czechoslovakia, then a Stalinist
dictatorship. The dissident novelist Zdenek Urbánek told me, "In one
respect, we are more fortunate than you in the west. We believe nothing of
what we read in the newspapers and watch on television, nothing of the
official truth. Unlike you, we have learned to read between the lines,
because real truth is always subversive." This acute skepticism, this skill
of reading between the lines, is urgently needed in supposedly free
societies today. Take the reporting of state-sponsored war. The oldest
cliché is that truth is the first casualty of war. I disagree. Journalism is
the first casualty.

The "New Totalitarianism" now defines a desperate neo-con end game
Bob Fitrakis and Harvey Wasserman, Free Press
As the Bush/neo-con kleptocracy disintegrates in a toxic cloud of military
defeat, economic bankruptcy, environmental disaster and escalating
mega-scandal, its attack on basic American freedoms---its "New
Totalitarianism"---has escalated to a desperate new level, including brutal
Soviet-style prosecutions against non-violent dissidents and an all-out
offensive for state secrecy, including an attack on the internet.

Shame on the Post's Editorial Page
Robert Parry, Consortium News
If a full and truthful history of the disastrous Iraq War is ever written,
there should be a chapter devoted to the pivotal role played by the
Washington Post's hawkish editorial page and the many like-minded thinkers
who are published in the newspaper's Op-Ed section.

The Pulitzer Farce
Alexander Cockburn, CounterPunch
The central project of the Pulitzer Prizes for work done in 2005 has been to
remind the world that, appearances to the contrary, the nation is well
served by its premier east coast newspapers, the New York Times and the
Washington Post. I should rephrase that. The central project of the Pulitzer
Prize committee is always to perform that function, only this year the need
was more pressing than usual. 2005 was a bad year for the New York Times,
dominated by steady disclosure of its important role in manufacturing and
then disseminating lies designed to plunge the nation into war in Iraq.

OVERTHROW
Russell Mokhiber and Robert Weissman, Corp-Focus
Democratic Party critics charge that the Bush administration is ripping the
United States from a long history of diplomacy by violently overthrowing
governments. Not true, says former New York Times foreign correspondent
Stephen Kinzer. Kinzer says that in fact the opposite is true. "Actually,
the United States has been overthrowing governments for more than a
century," Kinzer said in an interview.

In Support Of Mutiny
Dennis Morrisseau, ICH
Just this past week there was a flicker of information or rumor across the
internet that a number of senior U.S. Military officers had threatened to
resign if the Iran Operation comes on, as it now looks like it will. In
addition, it was said that DoD was treating the communication of the threat
to resign as a "mutiny". (Against civilain authority was the
Administration's spin.) If, in fact, such a thing did occur, it is indeed a
mutiny in my opinion.

Immigration Endgame: May 1st and America's New Race War
Juan Santos, Dissident Voice
We can no longer use the term loosely -- America's war against migrants is
real, and the nation's rulers mean to sweep the nation's barrios the way
Katrina swept the Black wards of New Orleans. And like the military
operations visited upon the Black population of that city in the wake of the
winds and floods, the war against migrants is a race war -- one directed
from the highest levels of power.

The US Gulag Prison System
Steve Lendman, Z Magazine
Today the US shamelessly has more people behind bars than any other nation
including China with over 4 times our population. And things have become
especially repressive against those in society least able to defend
themselves including immigrants of color and our newest head of the queue
demon - Muslims. The Bush administration has made a bad situation far worse
taking full advantage of their fear-induced "permanent state of war" and
sham "global war on terrorism" to target all those seen as a potential
threat to their plan for global dominance and full control at home. Taken as
a whole, this is a national disgrace and outrage, but the effect on those
targeted is pretty much below the radar, unreported and undiscussed in the
mainstream.

Who Wants Peace in Darfur?
Yoshie Furuhashi, MR Zine
The "Save Darfur" rally today was aired on C-Span. The rally was small --
only several thousands according to Reuters ("Thousands March to Stop Darfur
Killing," 30 April 2006). And the crowd in attendance was overwhelmingly
white. But, boy, it was a professionally-staged photo op, with celebs,
politicos, and exiles from Sudan at the podium expertly framed by the U.S.
Capitol in the background. The timing of the rally was perfect, designed to
coincide -- and scuttle -- the Abuja peace negotiations between the rebels
and Khartoum brokered by the African Union, whose deadline is midnight
today.
