Halloween Without End: The Permanent Costume Ball of War, Politics and
Economic Manipulation
by Zbignew Zingh

Halloween is a celebration of a protection racket, an extortion threat
reduced to the level of a child's game. The original plea for a "treat"
carries an implicit threat of retaliation if no sweets are put in the bag.
"Trick or treat!" cry the kids who want candy in return for not
toilet-papering your car or egging your house. "Trick or Treat!" shout the
President, the Congress, the Pentagon and Wall Street as they hold out their
bags to extort the world's wealth, its resources, your labor, your children,
your futures and your lives. "Trick or Treat!" say the plutocrats, the
neocons and neoliberals;"Trick or Treat, or our armies will blow up your
houses, bomb you back to the Stone Ages; we'll throw you in prison, we'll
beat you, torture you, rape you, shove 'democracy' down your throats."
"Trick or Treat!" scream ambassadors, generals, businessmen and god-mongers;
"Trick or Treat! Trick or Treat! Trick or Treat!" And the majority of us,
scared witless, cowed, terrified, pay the extortion, the price of the
protection racket, to keep our jobs, to preserve our shrinking health care,
to preserve the illusion of retirement benefits, to fill our cars with gas.

Voting: What is it Good for? Absolutely Nothing
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire

If you trek to your voting place next week, you will be condoning thievery,
endless war, continued corruption, and above all else, the destruction of
the Constitution. "Being patriotic in America means being devoted to the
Constitution, if not the natural rights philosophy that motivated much of
it. Since neither of the major political parties has any interest whatsoever
in enforcing the constitutional limitations on the state, they are all
traitors to the Constitution," writes Thomas J. DiLorenzo. "Anyone who
supports them is also behaving in a traitorous manner. That is, anyone who
votes for any of them. Voting only allows these traitors to the Constitution
to proclaim that 'the people have spoken' and 'I am your president,' or
congressman, senator, governor, or whatever. Their legitimacy rests solely
on their ability to make this claim."

Fight the Illusion--Don't Vote!
Robert L. Johnson, Strike the Root

The criminals that take up space in Congress and the White House need people
to vote. They need to keep the lie alive! Even though there is no room for
real debate and free exchange of ideas in this country, they desperately
need to keep the illusion going that they are the representatives of "the
people," that they are doing "the people's work." Of course, in reality they're
doing nothing more than promoting their own political careers, which
requires they serve powerful special interest groups like the American
Israel Public Affairs Committee and giant corporations. This is why
approximately 650,000 Iraqi civilians and almost 3,000 US troops have died
in Iraq and why even though productivity, executive pay and corporate
profits have climbed, real wages for working people have remained flat at
best.

Personal Account: The Horrors of Extraordinary Rendition
Maher Arar, CounterPunch

We now know that my story is not a unique one. Over the past two years we
have heard from many other people who were, who have been kidnapped,
unlawfully detained, tortured and eventually released without being charged
with any crime in any country.

Al-Qaeda Wants Republicans to Win
Robert Parry, Consortium News

George W. Bush's blunt assertion that a Democratic victory in the Nov. 7
elections means "the terrorists win and America loses" misses the point that
Osama bin Laden stands to advance his strategic goals much faster with a
Republican victory. Indeed, as U.S. intelligence analysts have come to
understand, there is a symbiotic relationship between Bush's blunderbuss
"war on terror" and bin Laden's ruthless strategy of terrorist violence -
one helping the other. Last April, a National Intelligence Estimate,
representing the consensus view of the U.S. intelligence community,
concluded that Bush's Iraq War had become the "cause celebre" that had
helped spread Islamic extremism around the globe.

Biofuels: A Disaster in the Making
Global Forest Coalition, Energy Bulletin

There is nothing green or sustainable to imported or exported biofuel.
Instead of destroying the lands and livelihoods of local communities and
Indigenous Peoples in the South through yet another form of colonialism, we
call upon Northern countries to recognize their responsibility for
destroying the planet's climate system, to reduce their energy consumption
to sustainable levels, to pay the climate debt they have created by failing
to do so until now and to dramatically increase investment in solar energy
and sustainable wind energy.

Living In A Van Down By The River Blog

Civilization has taught me from birth to watch out for number one. This is
true even despite the lip service we give to sharing on Sesame Street and in
church. What sharing I have learned to do has been sharing from what I have
that is extra, rather that sharing of whatever I have. Yesterday, I began
the process of unlearning that unhelpful lesson. I have long suspected that
one of the groups of humans who stand a better chance than most of us at
outliving the collapse are homeless people. They are already surviving
outside the dominant heirarchical structures. They are the least dependent
on those structures of any of us. I'll bet they are already the most adept
at the sharing of resources and information that is crucial to navigating
the collapse.

Marching on McDonald's: Coalition of Immokalee Workers Campaign Continues
Kari Lydersen, Infoshop News

Farm workers are arguably the lowest-paid and most-abused workers in the
U.S., making on average less than $10,000 a year with no health benefits or
paid vacation or sick days, working with toxic pesticides and living in
squalid, unhealthy conditions. Immokalee workers pick tomatoes at a
piece-rate that hasn't changed in 25 years, according to an analysis of U.S
Department of Labor data done by the CIW. They must pick more than two tons
of tomatoes per day just to make the state's minimum wage rate of about $6
an hour.
