TACO HELL: MEXICAN WAVES OF RESISTANCE AND REPRESSION
By SchNEWS
Teachers and their supporters have been demonstrating since May against a
corrupt authoritarian state regime, guilty also of seriously underfunding
local education. Included on their list of demands were outrageous requests
for more textbooks, breakfasts for schoolchildren, scholarships, uniforms,
shoes, medical services and better pay. The clincher, perhaps, was their
demand for the resignation of the Governor, Ulises Ruíz Ortíz, who has been
busy using the usual array of tactics available to Mexican cops, with
disappearances, beatings and torture being used against so called
'subversive elements' for some time.

Hell Is Rising in Oaxaca: An Interview With a Oaxacan Rebel
By Ron Jacobs
This rebellion reminds me of Bolivia, because of it indigenous component. As
in Bolivia, once the indigenous population determines that it needs to be
overturned, we see that they gain a determination that has caused
governments to fall. In the case of Oaxaca, the most likely scenario is that
the governor is going to be overthrown.

Botched or not, the joke's on us
by Mickey Z.
Only a heavily conditioned society would be unable to recognize that Kerry
is an incurable warmonger, a man who voted for--and wrote parts of--the USA
PATRIOT Act, a man who declared that the Vietnam War was merely a "mistake,"
a man who cast a "yes" vote in October 2002 for George W. Bush's plan to
invade Iraq the following year.

Tangram: Son of Total Information Awareness
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
As usual, when it comes to surveillance and the panopticon state, the ACLU
misses the point. In response to the discovery of the son of the Total
Information Awareness, Tangram, described as "a program in which former TIA
contractors build on existing TIA research to create a new, enhanced form of
the program," according to Justin Rood, the ACLU tells us the state is
"misdirecting resources towards this kind of fanciful, science-fiction
project. while neglecting the basics" of what Shaun Waterman of the UPI
calls "good counter-terrorist detective work." In fact, since the vast
majority of terrorists out there are working directly or indirectly for the
Pentagon, CIA, MI6, or Mossad, no "good counter-terrorist detective work" is
required. John Negroponte, CFR member and former overseer of the El Aguacate
torture and murder dungeon in Honduras, now Director of National
Intelligence, is building upon Iran-Contra criminal John Poindexter's Total
Information Awareness, a "closed-loop" snoop system supposedly closed down
on October 1, 2003.

The Forgiven: Clint Eastwood's Good War
Mickey Z, ZNet
In the midst of our current, perpetual war against evil, America is yet
again reflecting upon the "good war." If Clint Eastwood is allowed to
recycle those images in "Flags of Our Fathers", as the author of an
alternative history of WWII, why shouldn't I state my case yet again? The
U.S. fought that war against racism with a segregated army. It fought that
war to end atrocities by participating in the shooting of surrendering
soldiers, the starvation of POWs, the deliberate bombing of civilians,
wiping out hospitals, strafing lifeboats, and in the Pacific boiling flesh
off enemy skulls to make table ornaments for sweethearts. FDR, the leader of
this anti-racist, anti-atrocity force, signed Executive Order 9066,
interning over 100,000 Japanese-Americans without due process. Thus, in the
name of taking on the architects of German prison camps became the architect
of American prison camps.

The Real Scoop on Biofuels
Brian Tokar, Common Dreams
Several well-respected analysts have raised serious concerns about this
rapid diversion of food crops toward the production of fuel for automobiles.
WorldWatch Institute founder Lester Brown, long concerned about the
sustainability of world food supplies, says that fuel producers are already
competing with food processors in the world's grain markets. "Cars, not
people, will claim most of the increase in grain production this year,"
reports Brown, a serious concern in a world where the grain required to make
enough ethanol to fill an SUV tank is enough to feed a person for a whole
year. Others have dismissed the ethanol gold rush as nothing more than the
subsidized burning of food to run automobiles. The biofuel rush is having a
significant impact worldwide as well. Brazil, often touted as the the most
impressive biofuel success story, is using half its annual sugarcane crop to
provide 40 percent of its auto fuel, while increasing deforestation to grow
more sugarcane and soybeans. Malaysian and Indonesian rainforests are being
bulldozed for oil palm plantations-threatening endangered orangutans,
rhinos, tigers and countless other species-in order to serve at the booming
European market for biodiesel.

The 9/11 Truth Movement as something we should not talk about
John Siman, Culture Change
Any American who is willing to study the implications of Global Peak Oil can
readily come to understand the cold logical necessity behind our continuing
military presence in Iraq: If we want to keep our commuters consuming and
our consumers commuting (and almost all of us do), if we want to keep our
interstates humming and our suburbs sprawling, if we want to keep our big
box shopping outlets stocked with hyper-cheap globalized goodies, then we
have to keep the oil flowing.
