The Real Terrorists: How 6 million people were killed in CIA secret wars
against third world countries
"If U.S. foreign policy results in massive death and destruction abroad, we
cannot feign innocence when some of that destruction is returned ... You've
got to learn that when you push people around, some people push back. As
they should. As they must. And as they undoubtedly will. There is justice in
such symmetry." -- Ward Churchill
"Which one book would you give to every politician? Answer: One that
explodes. Before you freak out, let's change the question and see what you
think: Which one book would you give to Hitler, Goering, Himmler, and
Goebbels? Let's ask this another way: Would a book have changed Hitler? I
don't think so. Unless it exploded. And before you freak out at the
comparison of modern politicians to Hitler and his gang, try to look at it
from the perspective of wild salmon, grizzly bears, bluefin tuna, or any of
the (fiscally) poor or indigenous human beings. Those in power now are more
destructive than anyone has ever been. And they are for the most part
psychologically unreachable. And if someone does reach some politician, that
politician will no longer be in power. I recently shared a stage with Ward
Churchill. He said the primary difference between the U.S. and the Nazis is
that the U.S. didn't lose. I responded with one word: "Yet." -- Derrick
Jensen

What's worse than an illegal war? A legal one
Brendan O'Neill, The Guardian
If I hear another anti-war protester or commentator use the word "illegal"
to describe the war in Iraq, I will throttle them. Not because I think the
war was "legal", or because I supported the war; in fact I was an implacable
opponent of invading Iraq since long before the invasion took place. Rather,
I despise the cries of "illegality" because implicit in this line of attack
is the idea that if the war had been legal - had the UN security council
decided in its infinite wisdom that Saddam really was tooled up with WMD and
thus deserved a whooping from the west - then the invasion and destruction
of Iraq would have been OK, or at least better. In fact, there would have
been only one thing worse than the illegal war against Iraq, and that would
have been a legal one.

Rising Violence Against Native Women Has 'Colonial Roots'
Michelle Chen, New Standard News
Groups advocating for Indian women say legislative remedies do not tackle
the colonialist underpinnings of the abuse, which are deeper and less
comfortable for official institutions to broach. Viewing the current
brutalization of native women through a historical lens, activists say that
violence on the scale seen today is a direct outgrowth of white settlement.
They argue that the rampant abuse, along with other social problems that
feed into it, originate from the sexual, economic and racial hierarchy
imposed on indigenous peoples. "Violence against native women is a result of
colonization," asserted Brenda Hill, a Siksika Blackfeet tribal member and
education coordinator with the Sacred Circle National Resource Center to End
Violence Against Native Women. "So how do you undo colonization? How do you
undo the internalized oppression?"

All the leaves are brown
Mickey Z, Infoshop News
More than two million acres of parks, farms, and open space are destroyed
each year in the name of a little something called sprawl. During the
twentieth century, an area equal to all the arable land in Ohio, Indiana,
and Pennsylvania was paved in the United States. This swath of terra firma
requires maintenance costing over $200 million a day and the surreptitious
cost of our car culture totals nearly $500 billion a year in the U.S. alone
(much of that going to the sustentation of waging perpetual war to keep the
world safe for petroleum). Besides the global warming, greenhouse effect,
unchecked militarism, and other sinister side effects of a society beholden
to the internal combustion engine, all that concrete severely impinges upon
those multi-hued falling leaves-which are, by design, supposed to be
introduced to microorganisms in the soil where they should theoretically
land. Since we humans have seen fit to pave the planet, the rhythms of the
natural world are habitually and imprudently ignored.

Apocalypse No! An Indigenist Perspective
Juan Santos, The Fourth World
It's simple. And obvious. We find ourselves in the midst of the most rapid
mass extinction in Earth's history; we have the power to all-but end life on
Earth. We can do so with nuclear weapons, today, in Iran, or simply by
turning the ignition switch on our automobiles and gliding over paved
surfaces where nothing can live. A little more carbon dioxide, just a
little, will tip the scale-unleashing our potential for matching the
greatest mass extinction ever-the one called The Great Dying.

Apocalypse No! Christian Fascism and the Nazi Legacy
(Part 2 of Apocalypse No! An Indigenist Perspective)
Juan Santos, The Fourth World
The Christian fascism we see arising before us is not the historical
exception - it's the rule, a rule proven time and again over the last half -
millennia. Christian Rome got its start slaughtering pagans and Gnostics in
a drive for imperial cultural conformity and conquest. It's little different
now. This is a deadly serious business.
