The New Media Offensive for the Iraq War
By Norman Solomon
The American media establishment has launched a major offensive against the
option of withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq. In the latest media assault,
right-wing outfits like Fox News and the Wall Street Journal editorial page
are secondary. The heaviest firepower is now coming from the most valuable
square inches of media real estate in the USA -- the front page of the New
York Times.

"Violated Twice:" Mexican Rape Victims are Regularly Denied Abortions
By Kari Lydersen
Cruz founded Las Libres five years ago to help women access their legal
right to abortion after rape in Guanajato, which is considered to have the
country's most restrictive state anti-abortion laws. In the time the
organization has existed, Cruz said, the government has failed to provide
even one abortion to a rape victim. Women with enough resources can legally
pay for an abortion from a private clinic if they are raped, but low-income
women have nowhere to turn.

Off the press!: My life and good times in alternative journalism
Clif Garboden, The Phoenix
The world according to CBS and the local daily ceased to align with what we
were discovering about the world we were entering, uncensored, at recklessly
high speed. But at our core, the equation was unbreakable. Media = truth. So
when the media we were fed stopped adding up, we re-invented it, using the
medium most readily at out disposal - student newspapers. We eschewed the
varnished bull that filled the mainstream press and, most of all, the
Pollyanna-mouthed PR that deans of students expected us to publish. We cut
through the crap.

Voting divides, spurs authority
Bill Anderson, The Badger Herald
Voting simply legitimizes the authority of the state. What's called Liberal
Democracy was an adaptation, undertaken by expanding late-medieval
nation-states, to the rise of guns and the printing press. When the masses
of people have access to guns, and can communicate and record what the
government is doing, it's not long before they are going to realize they are
being exploited, rise up, and overthrow or assassinate their king or lord.
And so, political democracy was invented to give the masses a perception
that they are in control, because we get to select from a representative of
the ruling class. In other words, we pick who is better at lying to us.

Impeach the American People!
Butler Shaffer, Lew Rockwell.com
I do not discount for a moment the vicious and wicked deeds of the White
House sociopaths who have, with only token objection from others, behaved
like drunken SS-officers on a holiday for butchers. But it is time not only
for Americans, but for the subjects of other nation-states as well, to look
themselves in the face and ask why they have been willing not only to
sanction such destructiveness, but to insist upon it as the highest
expression of the "greatness" of the society in which they live.

Blaming the victim
Noah Merrill, Electronic Iraq
Blaming the victim goes a long way in the United States, because we don't
like failures. It's a safe bet that the continually rising poll numbers
opposing the war aren't an expression of collective outrage at the suffering
of the Iraqi people. Plain and simple, Americans don't like losing, and so
we find a scapegoat when things don't work the way we want them to. Because
otherwise, we'd have to blame ourselves.

Oaxaca: The Painful But Necessary Birth of a Popular Revolt
Tomas Cruz, Toward Freedom
I have never been involved in protests of this magnitude before. Old
houseviwes, teachers and mothers were confronting the armed men and
instilling on them through words, respect for life and the autonomy of
popular mobilizations. The fear of the tanks, the helicopters, somehow went
away because of the importance of this moment - we just felt the moment. The
police attempted to retake one of the main arteries in the city but
protesters fought back fiercely. Old men, women, children, armed with sticks
and rocks were able to succesfully make the unjust government retreat, in
spite of all its police, military and weapons.

Missing presumed tortured
Stephen Grey, New Statesman
More than 7,000 prisoners have been captured in America's war on terror.
Just 700 ended up in Guantanamo Bay. Between extraordinary rendition to
foreign jails and disappearance into the CIA's "black sites", what happened
to the rest?

Depleted Uranium, Another Gift From The Imperialists
Pauline Paulinson, Countercurrents.org
US forces admit to using over 300 tons of DU weapons in 1991. The actual
figure is closer to 800. Also the US used 200 tons more in Baghdad alone
during the recent invasion with a total of 1500 tons in all of Iraq. And
this time it wasn't limited to anti-tank weapons but was extended to guided
missiles, large bunker busters and big 2000-pound bombs used in Iraq's
cities. This means that Iraq's cities have been blanketed in lethal
particles. Japanese professor, Dr. Yagasaki, calculated that 800 tons of DU
is the atomicity equivalent of 83,000 Nagasaki bombs. The US has used more
DU since 1991 than the atomicity equivalent of 400,000 Nagasaki bombs. The
"smog of war" from the 1991 Gulf War was found in deposits in South America,
the Himalayas and Hawaii. In addition, the use of DU in huge bombs which
throw the deadly particles higher and wider in huge plumes of smoke means
that billions of deadly particles have been carried high into the air swept
worldwide by the winds.

Fifty Million Farmers
Richard Heinberg, Energy Bulletin
I believe that the de-industrialization of agriculture could be carried out
in a way that is not catastrophic and that in fact substantially benefits
society and the environment in the long run. But to be convinced of the
thesis we need more than promises-we need historic examples and proven
strategies. Fortunately, we have two of each.

Richard Linklater transforms `Fast Food Nation' into film
Christopher Kelly, Mercury News
This is unabashedly political-minded stuff - a film that dares to express an
abrasive, anti-capitalist message. The 46-year-old Austin, Texas-based
director - whose previous efforts include "Dazed and Confused," "The School
of Rock," "Before Sunset" and last summer's "A Scanner Darkly" - says that
it's also the realization of a long-standing ambition to make a film from
the point of view of the average American worker.
