Conspicuous consumption comes out of the closet
By Mickey Z.
The richest one-fifth of the world's humans consume 58% of total energy, use
74% of all telephone lines, consume 84% of all paper, and own 87% of all
vehicles. The poorest one-fifth of the world's humans consume less than 4%
of total energy, use 1.1% of all telephone lines, consume less than 1% of
all paper, and own less than 1% of all vehicles. These stats may imply
innocence for four-fifths of us but if you live in America, you are almost
definitely a member of the "richest one-fifth" and thus require more than
two closets.

It Could Happen Here
Gregory Meyerson and Michael Joseph Roberto, Monthly Review
We oppose the idea that fascism or an intensification of fascist processes
could emerge through a fundamentalist movement, a rogue ruling class, or
both. While recognizing that current conditions are fueling the idea of
fascism via a neoconservative hijacking of American democracy, we argue that
the intensification of fascist processes will come-if it does come-from the
ruling class as a whole.

Using Words, Not Weapons: Students Weigh in on the Draft
Susan Van Haitsma, Dissident Voice
Students also notice contradictions in allowing the military onto school
campuses. "People complain about violence in school and they let people come
in and encourage it. I just don't get it," wrote one. Another student added,
"I think it's wrong to try and impress kids with BIG GUNS and SHINY BADGES.
Why would anyone want to get respect for murder?"

Federal government launches marketing campaign for psychiatric industry
Richard A. Warner, Online Journal
Under the guise of combating the stigma of mental illness, the U.S.
government will soon begin a massive campaign of psychiatric indoctrination,
designed to increase the acceptance of psychiatric chemical imbalance
theories and labeling, and to pave the way for national psychiatric
screening, driving more Americans into seeking psychiatric drug treatment.

Just Another Imperialist: Barack Obama and the Winds of War
Glen Ford, Black Agenda Report
Obama reveals himself as just another imperialist, oblivious to his own
nation's crimes and incapable of internalizing the concept of
self-determination and sovereignty of weaker nations. The U.S. has "coddled"
600,000 Iraqis to death - not counting those who previously perished during
decade-long sanctions. The Americans methodically destroyed the Iraqi state,
and now wonder why the militia/parties can't put it back together again. The
Americans drove most Iraqis to hate them, yet remain persuaded that they
retain the moral authority to scold one part of the nation, their "allies,"
while "extinguishing" (Obama's word) another part, the resistance.

Racism Kills
Molly Secours, CounterPunch
Last week comedian Michael Richards fired a round of angry racial epithets
at several young black men heckling him in a comedy club in Los Angeles.
Just one week later, Sean Bell, a 23 year old groom-to-be and his two
friends (all black) were gunned down by five plain-clothed New York City
police officers who felt compelled to fire over 50 shots total at the three
unarmed men who were celebrating Bell's impending marriage. Although some
have characterized the slaughter as 'mistaken identity', the three were
unmistakably young, black and deemed menacing--even without possessing
weapons. Apparently these young men didn't need to be armed to be considered
dangerous.
