Radio Spoof Draws Support for Nazi-Like Treatment of U.S. Muslims
A parody of anti-Muslim bigotry on a Washington, D.C., radio station drew
support for treating American Muslims in a manner similar to how the Jewish
community was targeted in Nazi Germany.

Clueless in America: Feeding the Tape Worms of Desire
By Charles Sullivan
Whatever the origins of the grossly inflated American self image, it is, in
part, the paradigm behind the ideology of Manifest Destiny--a force that
continues rampaging and pillaging most of the world in its quest for markets
and wealth. Thus we witness the tragic consequences of the preservation of
the American Way--a wrath the rest of the world is expected to incur with
gratitude. We cannot recognize that the American Dream is the world's
nightmare. Our gluttonous wants, we think, supersede the right of other
people to exist. The gilded highway is built upon the bones of the victims
of genocide and empire, and that is what makes our ride into oblivion so
smooth.

Vietnam, Iraq, and the M Word
By Mickey Z.
In 1966, David Lawrence, editor of U.S. News & World Report, wrote: "What
the
United States is doing in Vietnam is the most significant example of
philanthropy extended by one people to another that we have witnessed in our
times." When challenged with stories of American atrocities in Vietnam,
Lawrence corrected his little gaffe, "Primitive peoples with savagery in
their hearts have to be helped to understand the true basis of a civilized
existence."

The Closure of Clamor Magazine
Clamor published over 1000 writers and artists in its 7-year, 38-issue run
We're writing to you today because we've decided to stop publishing Clamor.
We set out to create an independent magazine that would bulldoze borders,
defy dogma, and inspire instigation. We wanted to create a magazine that
extended the vibrancy of the underground zine community to a larger general
audience and share the enthusiasm and energy we saw in our fellow
do-it-yourselfers. We intended to redefine the progressive magazine. And
while we feel like we accomplished those goals at various stages, one goal
we never fully realized is that of making Clamor economically sustainable.

The Genocidal Fury of Thomas Friedman
Chris Floyd, Empire Burlesque
It seems that this very enthusiastic promoter of the unprovoked war of
aggression against Iraq -- which he proudly called "a war of choice,"
apparently not realizing that he was parroting the propagandists of the Nazi
regime that killed millions of his ethnic kindred -- has now discovered that
Iraqi Arabs are hopeless, worthless barbarians, broken by "1,000 years of
Arab-Muslim authoritarianism" and can only be held together by an "iron
fist."

The myth of the Kennedys
Joe Allen, Socialist Worker
The greatest of all the myths about the Kennedys is that if the two brothers
had lived, then much of the "turmoil" of the 1960s, particularly the U.S.
war in Vietnam, would have been avoided. For many liberals, Robert Kennedy's
assassination represented "the end of the '60s"-- the end of the road for
progressive political change and the beginning of three decades of
conservative rule.

Torture, the Geneva Conventions and the School of the Americas
Ann Wright, Truthout
I had served three years in the middle 1980s with the US military's Southern
Command in Panama while the School of the Americas was still located there.
People in Central and South America were tortured by members of their
militaries throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Terrible periods of torture in
Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras were conducted by
members of militaries from those countries. Some of the known torturers
attended the School of the Americas.

Supporting Death and Destruction
Michael Gaddy, LewRockwell.com
It would appear there are still a number of people out there who believe it
is actually possible to support the troops without supporting the war they
are participating in. I received comments such as "I can't believe you were
a soldier and are showing such contempt for those in uniform," and a
multitude of clichés such as "support the warrior, not the war." Until one
can fully comprehend the words of General Butler, they will never be able to
discern that one cannot support the criminal without supporting the crime.

Be All That You Can Be: Leave the Army
David Swanson, davidswanson.org
Approximately 6,000 Americans have refused to report for duty or deserted in
order to avoid taking part in this war, or to avoid taking further part in
it. Many have objected to the stop loss program that requires them to serve
longer than they had agreed to. Others have objected to the rationale behind
the war and the horrors that are part of it. Many are best able to support
their families by avoiding military service that is poorly compensated. In
the cases we know the most about, one motivation for desertion that is
clearly absent is cowardice. While quiet desertion tends not to result in
any penalty, public opposition and resistance often means prison.

Tipping point: energy
Jan Lundberg, Culture Change
The energy crisis is really a culture crisis, as King said. Do we have the
wisdom to at least acknowledge what kind of a ride we've been on? Now that
the world passed the energy tipping point, we need to take a non-energy
approach to the problem and emancipate ourselves from the domination of
technology wielded by profiteers, thrill seekers and numbed consumers.

Meth: The Overstated Addiction
Margaret Dooley, Drug Policy Alliance via Alternet
There is no indication that methamphetamine use is increasing. The
proportion of Americans who use methamphetamine on a monthly basis has
hovered in the range of 0.2 percent-0.3 percent since 1999. In fact,
according to the 2005 Monitoring the Future survey, the percentage of high
school seniors who reported using methamphetamine in the last year fell to a
low of 2.5 percent in 2005. (Use of depressants, meanwhile, increased from a
low of 2.8 percent in 1992 to around 7 percent in 2005.)

Where Murderers Still Stalk the Streets, Protected by the Police
Dispatch from Oaxaca: Where Murderers Still Stalk the Streets, Protected by
the Police
Rochelle Gause, CounterPunch
Running as fast as I can, surrounded by hundreds of others, I can hear
screams behind me. Glancing back, through the darkness of night I can only
differentiate between the masses running with me and the federal police by
the light reflecting off their shields and face masks. They are still
advancing. A hand pushes my left shoulder and I realize there are medics
behind me trying to run from the police while carrying a man on a stretcher
clasping a bloody cloth to his head. The medics are trying to reach the
makeshift clinic that the movement set up in a building just a few feet
ahead. I continue to run block after block as more people pour in from side
streets. The police are obviously advancing on multiple streets
simultaneously. Panic is starting to set in. Rushing through my mind are the
stories I have listened too over an over in the past two weeks while
interviewing those who have suffered human rights violations at the hands of
the federal police; the stories of sexual assault, of beatings, of
psychological torture, of death threats.

How Bin Laden's Master Spy Penetrated the CIA, the Green Berets and FBI
Amy Goodman, Democracy Now
Ali Mohamed was a member of Osama bin Laden's inner circle who operated
freely within the United States for years before 9/11. Despite being a top
al Qaeda operative, he managed to become a naturalized US citizen, join the
US Army, get posted to the military base where Green Berets and Delta Force
train and infiltrate both the CIA and FBI. And while he was an FBI informant
he smuggled bin Laden in and out of Afghanistan and helped plan the attacks
on US embassies in Africa. He ended up playing a pivotal role in 9/11.
