"For over a year now many Iraqis have been referring to what is happening in
their country as genocide. With over 500 Iraqis being killed every single
day as a direct result of the occupation, it is difficult to argue with
them." - Dahr Jamail

The Great Experiment
By Uri Avnery
Is it possible to force a whole people to submit to foreign occupation by
starving it? That is, certainly, an interesting question. So interesting,
indeed, that the governments of Israel and the United States, in close
cooperation with Europe, are now engaged in a rigorous scientific experiment
in order to obtain a definitive answer. The laboratory for the experiment is
the Gaza Strip, and the guinea pigs are the million and a quarter
Palestinians living there.

Dogfight in DC-Full of Barks and Drool, Signifying Nothing
By Ron Jacobs
I haven't read Bob Woodward's new book yet, but I am enjoying the dogfight
going on between the power elites over its veracity. Just like two dogs
fighting over last summer's buried bones, the Democrats and Republicans-each
representing their corporate sponsors in the yard-are snarling and nipping
at each other's legs and necks.

Denouncing Hugo Chavez
And other sports of the rich, infamous and just plain stupid
by Daniel Patrick Welch
When Nelson Mandela visited the US as the apartheid regime was crumbling
beneath his lifelong struggle, it was demanded of him that he "repudiate"
Mohamar Khadafi and Fidel Castro. Pictures were circulated of the supposedly
embarrassing hugs that would make such "repudiation" necessary. Mandela
refused, of course, clearly seeing the absurdity of bowing to pressure from
the erstwhile funders of his oppressors to denounce those who had supported
his struggle for decades. Black protesters of the Vietnam War, urged to
patriotic duty to kill communists and children halfway around the globe,
demurred with a similarly poignant retort: "No Viet Cong ever called me
'Nigger.'"

Peace Activists Beware: Homeland Security May Be Reading Your E-Mail, and
Passing it on to the Pentagon
Matthew Rothschild, The Progressive
More information keeps coming out, thanks to the ACLU, about the Bush
Administration's equation of protest with terrorism-and the snooping it then
engages in. Homeland Security is monitoring peace groups and even peering at
their e-mails. "This information is being provided only to alert commanders
and staff to potential terrorist activity or apprise them of other force
protection issues." It then shares that information with Joint Terrorism
Task Forces, which include the FBI and state and local law enforcement, as
well as with the Pentagon's notorious Talon (Threat and Local Observation
Notice) program.

A Terrorist Under Every Bush
Gayle Dean, LewRockwell.com
In a recently filed lawsuit, the ACLU has documented the way that, for
political reasons, the FBI has expanded the definition of domestic terrorism
to include mainstream groups who criticize government policy, i.e., groups
such as Greenpeace, PETA, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee,
and the ACLU itself.

Genocide in Iraq: The Numbers Tell the Horrific Story of a Lying Government
and Complicit Corporate Media
Kim Petersen, Dissident Voice
As reported by BBC News, a forthcoming study in the academic peer review
journal Lancet estimates the extra number of people killed because of the
aggression-occupation of Iraq at 655,000 -- up from a previous Lancet study
that estimated 100,000 deaths since the US-UK attacked Iraq. All the killing
has its origin in US-UK government lies. Weapons of mass destruction were
just a pretext as acknowledged by Ziocon Paul Wolfowitz in a Vanity Fair
interview, and the invasion was a foregone matter as revealed by the Downing
Street Memos. There is an ongoing genocide in Iraq. What else can over
600,000 killings be deemed but genocide? A price "worth it"?

Sowing the Seeds of Fascism in America
Stan Goff, Truthdig
Fascism traditionally employs either a master-race or master-culture
narrative. This narrative is reinforced for troops on the ground in Iraq by
the circumstances. The role of occupier is the role of dominator, and as
the Stanford Prison Experiment proved dramatically, this dominator role very
quickly translates into the dehumanization and objectification of the
dominated. On the ground, at the infantry level, wars of domination in
every instance become race wars. The dustup recently about a Marine singing
a song (which was published on the Internet as a video), called "Hadji
Girl," in which he humorously describes killing Iraqi children to the
raucous applause of his fellow Marines, was hardly a blip in the corporate
media.

Still Soaked: Corporate Settlements Don't Do Much for Residents of
Devastated St. Bernard Parish
Kari Lydersen, Infoshop News
On August 29, 2005, seething floodwaters from Hurricane Katrina lifted a
huge crude oil storage tank off its base and moved it 33 feet, releasing a
river of oil that combined with toxic sludge and oozed over and into about
1,800 homes in St. Bernard Parish about 10 miles east of New Orleans. The
incident is reportedly the biggest oil spill ever in a residential area. But
it was also just a more dramatic example of the kind of injuries the
facility had been inflicting on nearby residents for years.
