"Far from damaging the system, (activists) actually legitimize it. By their
petitioning, they acknowledge the right of those in power to exercise that
power as they choose." - Larry Law

Nukes: Iran and North Korea are not the problem
By Mickey Z.
Thanks to the nuclear aspirations of North Korea and Iran, there's no
shortage of rhetoric along these lines: "We can't let rogue nations have
nukes. They might use them." Absent from the discussion are two elementary
questions. First: What is the only nation to have used nuclear weapons (and
have civilians been targeted)?

University response to racist "ghetto fabulous" party is less than fabulous
by Robert Jensen
When one of the first-year University of Texas law students who participated
in a "ghetto fabulous" party posted pictures on the web, we saw the ugly
face of white privilege and the racism in which it is rooted. But the depth
of the problem of white supremacy at the university-and in mainstream
institutions more generally-is also evident in the polite way in which the
university administration chastised the students.

To Give Our Brightest Deepest Truth
Derrick Jensen, Living Freedom Archive
We have the freedom to consume, and then consume, and then consume some
more. We have the freedom to exploit and to be exploited, and then to
exploit and to be exploited some more. But we do not have the freedom to not
live under an exploitative, hierarchical system that is killing the planet.
This culture systematically destroys non-exploitative, non-hierarchical,
sustainable cultures. That's what it does. It systematically destroys all
alternatives (try living as a hunter-gatherer as part of a functioning
natural community on Manhattan Island), which means it destroys the ability
to say no to participating in it, which means that participation in it is
not voluntary, not free. It systematically destroys real freedoms. It
systematically destroys landbases.

Secret Service Grills 14 Year-Old Artist

I don't know about you, but I think Julia's art makes a political statement
that the vast majority of the people on the planet Earth would find
appealing, albeit in a humorous way (nudge, nudge). Recently, when Al
Franken came to the Crest Theater in Sacramento, I was there with a large
sign that said, "Impeach Bush." When a couple of old guys (who wore the hats
of WWII veterans) walked by me, one said, "Impeach? Hell, kill the bastard!"
Several people standing nearby broke out in laughter. I laughed too, just
like I did when I first saw Julia's art.

Sentimental Education: Academia Signs Up to Track Down Dissent
Chris Floyd, Truthout
The Bush administration already has spyware devouring reams of private
information in every direction. It is now paying top universities millions
of dollars to refine this data into actionable intelligence - including the
automated discernment and tracking of dissent against administration
policies and criticism of the president. Bush has openly declared that he
has no intention of obeying privacy laws - or any other laws safeguarding
the Constitutional rights of American citizens - if he doesn't want to. And
if that's not sinister enough for you, consider this: on Tuesday George W.
Bush signed the "Military Commissions Act," which states that he can
arbitrarily declare anyone - yes, American citizens included - an "unlawful
enemy combatant" for any action that he arbitrarily decides constitutes
"material support" to terrorists. He can imprison these "UECs" without
charge or trial, for the duration of the "War on Terror," which he and Dick
Cheney have already assured us will not end "in our lifetime."

Chertoff: "Radical Ideologies" Threaten Internet
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
According to Ministry of Homeland Security don Michael Chertoff,
"disaffected people living in the US may develop radical ideologies and
potentially violent skills over the Internet, something that can present the
next major security threat to the nation and to the world," reports Reuters.
"We now have a capability of someone to radicalize themselves over the
Internet," he told a meeting of the International Association of the Chiefs
of Police. "They can train themselves over the Internet."

Habeas corpus is the most elementary defense against arbitrary state action,
and it has never been permanently repealed for any section of the American
population-until now.

Will Peak Oil End the Cycle of Civilizatiion?
Peter Goodchild, Life After the Oil Crash
The main difference between America and previous civilizations, however, is
that from now on the cycle of "civilization" cannot be repeated. Oil is not
the only mineral that will be in short supply in the 21st century.
Industrial civilization has always been dependent on metals, but hematite,
for example, is no longer sufficiently common, and mining companies now look
for other sources of iron, which can be processed only with modern
machinery.

Israeli / US Cluster Bombs Litter Lebanon
James Brooks, CounterPunch
On September 26, the UN announced that the number of unexploded cluster
"bomblets" left in southern Lebanon by Israeli forces may be three times
higher than previous estimates. A million or more antipersonnel weapons may
be strewn across a region one-third the size of Rhode Island. Israel has yet
to respond to repeated requests for information about the locations of its
cluster bomb strikes in Lebanon. UN demining experts say this has made their
job 'far more difficult'. Two hundred thousand people cannot return to their
homes due to the severity of destruction and the massive quantities of
unexploded ordnance and cluster bomblets covering their communities. Since
the beginning of the ceasefire less than two months ago, 20 people have been
killed and 120 others have been injured by cluster bomblets and unexploded
ordnance.

False Hope and the Democrats: America's Other War Party
Mike Whitney, Al-Jazaeerah
The Democrats will never get us out of Iraq nor will they repeal the Patriot
Act or the Military Commissions Act of 2006 (which allows Bush to imprison
American citizens without charges and torture them according to his own
discretion). The party has been co-opted by a pro-business,
liberty-slashing, war-mongering clique of free traders who simply feel they
can put a better face on imperial politics. No argument there; but for
anyone with a trace of a conscience, the prospect of voting for a party that
may slaughter another half-million or so Iraqis presents some basic ethical
problems. Is it too sanctimonious to suggest that the war in Iraq is MORALLY
EVIL, and that any policy or party that supports the conflict must be flatly
rejected?
