Google: Disabling the Politically Incorrect
By Kurt Nimmo
Uruknet is highly rated as an Iraqi news source. "URUKNET is and has been
the most consistent, credible, and powerful web-based source of News and
Information on Iraq during the last 4 years. They have incomparable lines of
communication
direct from inside Iraq that fly in the face of the lies of the Global
Corporate Empire. When the imperialists cannot buy off or intimidate
websites like URUKNET, they can always depend on their billion dollar
corporations like Google to get the job done," explains Les Blough of
AxisofLogic.

Shameless in Gaza: Inching Toward a Palestinian Civil War
By Ramzy Baroud
The most recent fighting in the Gaza Strip, which has left many people dead,
confirms that the internal strife plaguing the Occupied Territories since
the advent of Hamas to power in January 2006 was not entirely the outcome of
outside meddling in Palestinian affairs. It is, in most part a violent
expression of the already existing weaknesses and disunity that has sadly
defined the Palestinian political milieu for
generations.

CHRISTIAN FASCISM: THE JESUS GESTAPO OF ST. ORWELL
By Carolyn Baker
New York Times reporter, Chris Hedges, has written an extraordinary book,
American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War On America. Having
survived a Christian fundamentalist background myself, I marvel at the
timely urgency of Hedges' book, but also, at the obtuse disconnect most
Americans have with the pivotal thesis of his book: the power of the
religious right in the United States to bring forth a nation whose
totalitarian repression could dwarf that of Nazi Germany in the 1930s.

Newsweek Throws the Spitter: The magazine repeats the myth of the
gobbed-upon Vietnam vet
Jack Shafer, Slate
The myth of the spat-upon Vietnam veteran refuses to die. Despite Jerry
Lembcke's debunking book from 1998, Spitting Image: Myth, Memory, and the
Legacy of Vietnam, and my best efforts to publicize his work, the press
continues to repeat the fables as fact. Earlier this month, Newsweek
resuscitated the vet-spit myth in a dual profile of John McCain and Chuck
Hagel.

The Orwellian Ideology of 24
Matt McCaffrey, Mises.org
The show calls to mind the brilliant propaganda films of Leni Riefenstahl,
who managed to sway the opinions of many Germans prior to World War II,
convincing them of the righteousness and glory of the Nazi Party.... the
show is attempting to justify and even celebrate an ever-expanding Orwellian
state. It almost makes me want to root for the bad guys.

Turner Broadcasting, Time Warner, Two Artists in Boston and the Big Double
Standard
Corporate Crime Reporter
Now that two young artists have been charged with felonies by state
prosecutors in Massachusetts for placing 38 cartoon devices to promote the
Cartoon Network's show "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" around Boston - devices that
caused a city-wide panic - the question becomes - why were the artists
charged and not the companies? The artists were charged with placing a hoax
device - a felony - and disorderly conduct. But the artists were working for
some very big companies. So, why isn't Time Warner facing felony charges?
Why isn't Turner Broadcasting? The Cartoon Network? The marketing company -
Interference Inc.? Why not the CEOs of these companies? Why were the artists
charged and not the companies? And not the company executives?

9/11: The Case Isn't Closed
Sander Hicks, AlterNet
No matter what you believe about who was responsible for 9/11, and how it
went down, we're all amazed at how much political capital the events of that
day produced for this administration: A bipartisan consensus on torture; an
era of permanent war; detentions without trial; "no fly" lists for
activists; the Bill of Rights gone with the wind, and a cowed professional
media willing to self-censor and suppress pertinent information. The 9/11
"America Attacked" story has distracted us from the natural outrage we
should feel over illegal wiretaps, stolen elections, hundreds of billions of
dollars missing at the Pentagon, war profiteering, Enron and Cheney's secret
energy policy.

War Criminals 'R' US
Richard Curtis, Common Dreams
If the war is acknowledged as illegal that means admitting that everyone who
participates in it, plans it, or orders it is a war criminal. As a society,
our morality is incredibly shallow, and we have a difficult time dealing
with challenges such as these. Watada is obviously right and those who
prosecute him can only succeed if they can put the law aside in making their
charges stick. We don't like to think that a young Marine drafted into the
military via the Poverty Draft and then sent off to war in Iraq is a War
Criminal - but he is. They all are. This is the obvious moral truth that
follows from Watada's challenge. This is what the Nuremburg Conventions
demand.

"Surging" Right Into Bin Laden's Hands
Adam Elkus, Electronic Iraq
Lost in the "surge" debate is the unfortunate reality that Bush's surge in
Iraq, just like the invasion itself, is just another success for Al Qaeda's
ultimate strategy to eliminate America. The goal is to get America to throw
all of its resources into fighting a losing battle against Iraq's lethal
patchwork of warring factions. Bush's 'surge' is only throwing more meat to
the jackals, who gain strength and popularity with each web-broadcasted
beheading or IED explosion.

Iran Clock Is Ticking
Robert Parry, Consortium News
Military and intelligence sources continue to tell me that preparations are
advancing for a war with Iran starting possibly as early as mid-to-late
February. The sources offer some differences of opinion over whether Bush
might cite a provocation from Iran or whether Israel will take the lead in
launching air strikes against Iran's nuclear facilities. But there is
growing alarm among military and intelligence experts that Bush already has
decided to attack and simply is waiting for a second aircraft carrier strike
force to arrive in the region - and for a propaganda blitz to stir up some
pro-war sentiment at home.

>From the Wonderful Folks Who Brought You Iraq
Craig Unger, Vanity Fair
The same neocon ideologues behind the Iraq war have been using the same
tactics-alliances with shady exiles, dubious intelligence on W.M.D.-to push
for the bombing of Iran. As President Bush ups the pressure on Tehran, is he
planning to double his Middle East bet?

A Clarion Call for Health Independence
Wendy McElroy, FFF
On a more political level, the overriding theme is "Question Authority."
Early in Lorenzo's Oil, Augusto requests medical material to better
understand what is happening to his son. Without meaning offense, a doctor
assures Augusto that he could not make possibly make sense of the studies.
The Odones do not stop questioning even when the responses are openly
hostile. Their willingness to tolerate both unlikely theories and the
skepticism those theories elicit is precisely what leads them to the source
of an effective treatment: olive oil. It is not merely that experts are
shown to be fallible and constrained by narrow thinking. It is that ordinary
people are shown to be capable of realizing their own self-interest even in
"expert only" areas.

Five Minutes With: Noam Chomsky
Niral Shah, Campus Progress
The U.S. used to routinely overthrow governments in Latin America. It went
on for decades, but it can't anymore. The last time the U.S. backed a
military coup, in 2002 in Venezuela, it had to back down very quickly. There
are tremendous barriers, and it's very hard to know if Latin America can
overcome them. But there is development of a kind that's never happened
before. It is, in many ways, the most exciting part of the world.
