GARGANTUA: Fear of a Fat Planet
June 8th - June 17th @ the Fringe Festival
An out-of-this-world sci-fi dance odyssey
************************************************
BOSTON, MA.- Start with hefty dancers, throw in some glitter dust and
fat chicks on skates, mix it up with an insane military plot that
could tear the galaxy apart, and what do you get? Why, it's GARGANTUA:
Fear of a Fat Planet, the newest Big Moves show that will be running
at the St.-Ambroise Montréal Fringe Festival June 8 through June 17.
The Mach-10 musical is taking up residence at Théâtre La Chapelle,
3700 Rue St-Dominique (Venue 10), with opening night on Friday, June
8, at 6 pm. Admission is $9 at the door, with festival passes
available online at www.montrealfringe.ca. Tickets may also be
purchased through the Fringe Festival box office at 514-849-FEST.

One part dance musical, one part Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy,
with a blast of B-movie kitsch and some kick-ass liberation politics
to boot, GARGANTUA is a campy extravaganza with more booty, more food
fights, and more heart than any other musical on a Montréal Fringe
stage, ever. It is an Anglophone show as far as script, but it is
full of dance numbers, too, and dance, as everybody knows, is the
universal language (and now it's pan-galactic, too!). The show played
to full houses throughout its fall 2006 tour through New England and
New York City, drawing audiences in with the usual Big Moves blend of
humor, dance skills, and social consciousness. Unlike previous Big
Moves shows, GARGANTUA actually has a script, and we're not afraid to
use it!

When we first meet our heroine, the Captain (Suzi Tasca), she is
heading out on a diplomatic mission to the little-known planet
Gargantua. Contrary to intergalactic gossip, she finds the natives
intelligent, cultured, and overflowing their tight alien silver
spandex outfits with exuberance, grace, and friendliness. Populating
the Fat Planet are dancers from Big Moves' home companies: Phat Fly
Girls (hip hop), Filling the Stage (musical theater), and Caravan of
Curves (bellydance), plus modern dancer Ariel Federow and the
Gargantuan poet laureate Jaclyn Friedman.

The Captain also meets Hefertiti, the Queen of Gargantua (Janie
Martinez), and the planet's top chef and street fighter, Charlie
(Mandy Lussier), who stages a Founders' Day banquet that can't be
beat. But an invasion by the neighboring Dietrons could mean an end to
the Gargantuans' joyful existence of dance, feasting, and song. Can
the brave captain and her new friends fight off the Dietrons and their
dastardly Wasting Ray? Buy your ticket and find out!

Selected by Boston Phoenix readers as the Best Dance Company in 2006,
Big Moves is the only producing and training organization in the
country dedicated to bringing more people of all sizes into the dance
studio and up on stage. Our cast for GARGANTUA is a powerhouse of
fat-tastic performers, from the award-winning spoken-word artist
Jaclyn Friedman, to Ms. Jew-SA Ariel Federow, to Janie Martinez, who
appeared in the acclaimed movie Shortbus as her fabulous lusty self.
Big Moves founder Marina Wolf Ahmad was recently honored for her work
in the field of dance and empowerment with a national award from
Project Confidence and spokesperson Queen Latifah. The GARGANTUA cast
from the US is even joining forces with plus-size bellydancers from
Montréal's Tywalline studio, for a stage event of international
proportions.

On the East Coast, Big Moves is a fiscally sponsored project of the
Boston Dance Alliance, a 501(c)3 organization. The Montréal
presentation of GARGANTUA is made possible by the generous financial
and organizational support of Centre 2110 at Concordia University. For
more information about GARGANTUA and the various programs of Big Moves
around North America, visit us online at http://www.bigmoves.org or
