Hey, all,
While I recognize people's concerns about not creating a set of rules of
conduct for the ride, concrete measures need to be taken to address a
pervasive concern that the rides of late have been tainted by a bit of hostility and
a rather un-festive tone.
The bottom line for me and I think for many folks at the meeting at
Sparky's is that the rides be a celebration that is decidedly political. And the
last time I checked, a celebration involved good cheer, not pissed off folks
ready to smash some windows. The more we take active measures to be a
celbration on two wheels, the less a possibility that hostile incidents will break
out. I think we do need to have some kind of vision statement, but also
chants, cheers, songs - and as we discussed - perhaps themes to each ride. This
will further enhance what we want the rides to be (and I'm almost positive no
one will disagree with the celebratory aspect of critical mass).
I will be working on a flyer and some chants/songs for the next ride. I
just found out I have to go to a staff "retreat" for work starting tonight
and going till Sunday. Blah.
Anyhoo, I'll get cracking on those things next week.
Best,
John
