hey all,
i agree a lot with what aaron has said, and it has been a major reason why i haven't felt comfortable coming to critical mass rides lately. i feel like especially on the heels of this weekend and emphasis should be placed on sending a clear message and not as much disruption.
here is an example of a flier that my friends and i handed out when we biked to the mississippi river, i don't have the file so i'll just write some of the questions:
we are biking to:
demonstrate that bicycles are and alternative to depending on cars for oil and transportation.
we are biking to:
BEGIN A CONVERSATION...WITH YOU...
did you know that although we are only 5% of the world's population, the us consumes 26% of the world's oil? in the year 2000 we consumed 20 million barrels of oil a day, 53% of which was used for transportation mostly for single occupancy vehicles!
how do you feel about the oil and gas corporations that profit from our dependence on cars? companies like exxon, shell and texaco are hoping to receive $22 billion in federal subsidies from the us government this year.
what do you think about the fact that the middle east, home of the world's largest oil reserves, is also the top marketfor us weapons sales?
as we are biking the bush administration is making moves towards an "inevitable" war in iraq, which will take thousands of innocent lives. how does the promise of violence and war make you feel?
...ABOUT OIL, WAR AND THE POSSIBILITIES FOR PEACE.
that's just a bit of some of our flier, just wanted to put it out there for ideas.
take care.
chris
