*** FORWARD OUT PLEASE!!! ***
Bike for Fair Food: Ride to Action!
When: October 30th, 6pm
Where: Meet at Dupont Circle, then ride to Burger Kings around town.
What: An energetic, biking protest at 3 different Burger King locations.
Who: You and all your friends
Why: This is an action to support the Coalition of Immokalee Workers'
Campaign against Burger King. The CIW is an organization of farmworkers in
south Florida fighting for: "among other things: a fair wage for the work
we do, more respect on the part of our bosses and the industries where we
work, better and cheaper housing, stronger laws and stronger enforcement
against those who would violate workers' rights, the right to organize on
our jobs without fear of retaliation, and an end to indentured servitude
in the fields."
What the Coaltion is asking of Burger King:
1. A penny more per pound to workers harvesting tomatoes for Burger King;
2. A stronger code of conduct based on the principle of worker participation;
3. A collaborative effort to develop a third-party mechanism for
monitoring conditions in the fields and investigating workers complaints
of abuse.
Taco Bell, and subsequently all of YUM! Brands, and McDonald's have
already agreed to this deal. Burger King has no excuse!
So grab your bicycle, and come dressed in your favorite fair food costume,
and join us to support farmworkers' struggle for fair wages and working
conditions!
Don't have a bike? Meet up at Dupont anyway, rally, pass out flyers,
protest at the first Burger King, and meet your fellow fair fooders in the
DC area!
ps- we may hit up Chipotle too!
