Gas prices are soaring into uncharted heights here. Food prices are soaring around the world in part because the prospect of powering cars with plant based fuel, especially here, has driven food costs upwards really fast. Auto sales are down for a lot of the big auto makers. Driver mileage is down. Sedentary commuting and fast food diet gave our babies diabetes early, and us a shorter life span. Everybody knows Iraq has a lot of oil and even the most obedient among us think the war in Iraq is a huge harmful mistake. Ground level ozone - particulate matter - air quality index - code red day. The developers who dominate how our towns are built are, with the state's aid, coercing people out of their neighborhoods, clearing carbon-storing-land-cooling-rain-absorbing-plants to build an 18 mile highway north of dc, the intercounty connector.

The next Critical Mass happens on July 4, a day when souls the region over pack into dc to watch reminders of bombs to the monarchy on the mall, and some dirtier neighborhoods melt into autonomous street parties lighting their own "kaboom". Everybody is in the streets and all the drivers among them aren't enjoying driving as much this past year.

So, what does Critical Mass look like to you on July 4th? 

Who wants to make the biggest flags ever with messages of independence from the likes of exxon?       big flag idea: "let's get free"-with a bike
