[dc-critmass-list] Mayor Fenty dumps Smart for giant SUV at pro-gentrification ribbon cutting

http://dc.indymedia.org/newswire/display/144131/index.php is a DC Indymedia story about homeless shelter advocates(for Franklin Shelter) confronting Mayor Fenty at the ribbon cutting for the new City Vista Safeway.The mayor is closing downtown's only homeless shelter on Oct1, just winter starts to approach. The City Vista Safeway is part of a giant condo project called City Vista aimed at turning the 5th and K st/Ls area into an uper-class neighborhod and displacing the poor.

Here's an interesting sub-story as far as Critical Mass is concerned: When protesters followed Fenty away from the ribbon-cutting, he went to his car-a brand new, city-tagged LINCOLN NAVIGATOR!!

  This is a brand-new, gas-guzzling luxury SUV that is no doubt costing serious money both to pay for and to keep fueled!  Even using TWO Smarts(one for him,m one for security detail) would have used less gas in the city that that thing-and WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO FENTY'S BIKE??????

 He could have shown up on his bike, with his cop escort on police bikes. Instead he uses the giant SUV to show off for he developer buddies.

  A comment to the Indymedia story says he had a bike wreck, but most of us on this list have had our sharee of those-and are still riding. Where is Fenty's bike-and who is paying for that huge SUV and its gas bill...
