[dc-critmass-list] Fw: Critical Mass in NY gets the gavel.

Manhattan riders have dealt with some shit for a looooong time. Going there, I could see how rides have adjusted. They are pretty organized with watchers keeping an eye out for police traps at intersections and getting the mass to stop at intersections where it looks like police are waiting to pounce. Meet up points have been promoted before rides, so if the police really break up the gathering, there is a regrouping to look forward to. There area lot of cameras. Still in the hundreds, the Manhattan Critical Mass is a lesson on how many have endured through years of harassment. A lot of New Yorkers worked hard to keep it alive and fun through a loud and rude nypd presence. It's actually weird how many resources nypd dedicates to harrassing a monthly party on bikes.

As I understand it, one goal of Critical Mass is to raise issues related
to cycling. Police bias against cyclists is one such issue. This seems
to be getting a lot of discussion on-line right now, along with the usual
cyclist-motorist conflicts, which also will not be fixed without an ongoing
public discussion.

The NYC CMers who have kept riding through all the harassment have my thanks.
