Jill Sternberg on Human Rights, Women’s Rights
and the Struggle for Justice in Timor-Leste

March 1st, 2011, 7 pm
339 Lafayette St., New York, NY
between Bleecker and Bond Streets

Please join ETAN in welcoming long-term
solidarity activist Jill Sternberg for a
presentation on recent developments in
Timor-Leste. Jill will discuss Timor-Leste’s
pressing human rights issues and activism,
including women’s rights struggles and efforts to
end domestic violence. She will highlight recent
efforts in the struggle for justice and
accountability for crimes committed against the
Timorese throughout the Indonesian occupation between 1975-1999.

Jill Sternberg (bio)
For the past ten years, Jill has been
accompanying the people of Timor-Leste in their
struggle for self-determination. She was a United
Nations accredited observer for the August 30,
1999 vote for independence in East Timor, and has
observed every national election there since. In
2007 she coordinated the ETAN initiated
Solidarity Observer Mission (SOMET) for the
country’s first parliamentary elections since
independence. From 2000-2004, Jill assisted Nobel
Peace Laureate José Ramos-Horta to develop the
Peace and Democracy Foundation, a peace center
focused on conflict transformation. From
2008-2011 she worked at HAK Association, a
leading human rights organization, where her work
focused on communications and building support
and solidarity for a free, fair and independent Timor-Leste.
Jill has organized, designed and facilitated
diversity, gender, and nonviolent conflict
transformation programs across the globe,
emphasizing nonviolent intervention in conflict
situations, and an analysis from a power
perspective with a focus on gender. Her aim is to
empower people to develop concrete positive ways
to address the causes of violence and war, and to
support local actors working for peace. Jill’s
organizing and training work encourages strategic
local, national and international activism.
