Well, ours were a lot more curled up when I found them.  They'd
had a couple of hours to enjoy the nice, fresh air by the time I
finished shoveling mulch and got around to taking their pictures.

Stefan Minot identified them as June bug larvae and pointed to
this page:

According to which the June bug is a variety of the Japanese
beetle.... So I guess you're both right.

Encountering all this wildlife certainly is exciting for a city boy.
