Forest Farming as an Agroforestry System for the Northeast

October 19, 4 p.m., Mann Library, Exhibit talk by Ken Mudge, Dept. of
Horticulture, CU

It used to be that forests were cleared to make way for productive
farmland. Now, no longer--at least not as a matter of course. The past
century has seen a gradual resurgence in the forest cover in the
northeastern U.S. In a special lecture at Mann Library, professor Ken
Mudge (Dept. of Horticulture) will reflect on the promise of forest
farming--the cultivation and harvest of medicinal herbs, fruits,
mushrooms and nuts under a thriving tree canopy--as a sustainable
agroforestry system for the region. Forest-farmed treats will be
served!

Talk presented in conjunction with an open house at the McDaniels Nut
Grove (behind the Library Annex, just south of the Cornell School of
Veterinary Medicine and Cornell Orchards at the east end of campus) on
Saturday, October 14 and with the exhibit: "Farming under the Forest
Canopy," on display at Mann Library October 16, 2006 through January
15, 2007.
