The development of roads in Tompkins County and the transformation of
wet lands on the southern end of Lake Cayuga are two of the
historical processes Ithaca College environmental history students
examined this semester in partnership with The History Center’s
research library.

The History Center invites you to join us on Wednesday, April 25 from
7 – 9 pm when the students will present their findings on these and
other case studies of environmental transformation to the community.
A question and answer period will follow. With news of human-induced
environmental change increasingly in the headlines, the latest
installment of this history project offers insights into the
historical relationship between people and the local environment.

Michael Smith, Assistant Professor of History and Environmental
Studies at Ithaca College, developed this environmental history
course requiring students to use local historical resources to study
an event or process in the greater Ithaca area. In doing so, it is
his hope that students will develop a sense of “ecological
citizenship” and an understanding that they are a part of the
community they are studying.
Upon completion of their studies, the Ithaca College student research
will become part of The History Center’s collection.
