Organizers with Save Gaza will give a presentation on the current
humanitarian situation in the refugee camps of the Gaza Strip in Palestine
and their project to help alleviate the crisis there through intensive,
sustainable home gardening and composting.
Save Gaza is an organization dedicated to alleviating the current situation
in Gaza through development and humanitarian relief. We are launching our
first project from the Summer of 2007 through April 2008. More than 80% of
Gazans live below the poverty line, which is a little less than $2 a
day. Half of them are food insecure which means that they do not have
regular access to food.
Our project is focused on sustainable development. 70% of Gazans are
farmers. People are already attached to their land and rely on farming for
their food. A great deal of existing agricultural land and equipment has
been destroyed. There is a severe water shortage that affects more than
half of the population. We are promoting and encouraging small scale home
gardens which require very little maintenance and water. These gardens
will provide nutritious vegetables for families that cannot afford a
healthy meal and hopefully alleviate some of the already existing
mal-nutrition.
With that said, we are still raising funds to make this project successful.
$10 to $20 will give a family of 4 a small, nutritional and wholesome garden
to last 3-5 years. This is more sustainable than food aid such as outside
shipments of milk, flour and rice, which are needed as well, but are not
stable solutions in the long term.
