Register now for Health & Sustainability Conference
WHAT: Conference linking public health issues and sustainable living
in the
Finger Lakes region
----------------
WHEN: 10:30 am – 5 pm, Saturday, September 15, 2007
----------------
WHERE: Hill Center, Ithaca College campus
----------------
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Health care professionals, educators, building
managers,
planners, policy makers, sustainability leaders, media, and anyone else
concerned about health care in relation to global climate change and
other
emerging threats. The conference is open to all, and interested
citizens are
encouraged to attend.
----------------
WHY: New global disease patterns, environmental toxins, the obesity
epidemic, untreated preventable diseases, and more frequent and
destructive natural
disasters are resulting in unprecedented stresses to our health care
systems.
Health & Sustainability Conference speakers, consultants, and
exhibitors will
present information on sustainable solutions to many of these
stresses.
---------------
WHO WILL SPEAK: Jonathan Patz, University of Wisconsin and Johns Hopkins
Bloomberg School of Public Health, will outline the health care
threats of
intensified heatwaves, sprawl development, and chemical exposures
and how to reduce
these risks by rethinking how we live and work. Marie Kulick, author of
Healthy Food, Healthy Hospitals, Healthy Communities, will talk
about the
importance of providing fresh, healthy foods for hospitals. She is
leading a pilot
farm-to-hospital program in the Midwest to bring locally-grown and
organic
foods to patient rooms and hospital cafeterias. Derek Cabrera, a
visiting
fellow at Cornell University and founder of ThinkWorks, will share
ideas about
using systems thinking and modeling in the health care field. Other
speakers
include Sandra Steingraber, an environmental researcher, author, and
cancer
survivor whose work is often compared to that of Rachel Carson.
----------------
HOW TO SIGN UP: Registration is $25 per person ($30 after Sept 1) which
includes information sessions, lunch, exhibits, and a dessert
reception where
chefs will compete to provide the tastiest treats made from healthy
ingredients.
