Orchard Workshop
March 3rd & 4th, 2007
With Hugh Williams


Saturday, March 3rd: 9 am to 4 pm. Potluck lunch. Learn the
art of Grafting! Practice bench grafting apple trees with 1
year old scion wood on EMLA 111 rootstocks.

Discussion of other grafting techniques & nursery care of young apple 
trees.

We provide: rootstocks, scion wood, grafting rubbers, wax.

You bring: a very sharp grafting knife (and if desired, scion wood

from a favorite apple tree)

Take home up to 5 baby trees; additional root stocks may be

purchased (@$2.50/piece).

You will also learn selecting and cutting scion wood, how to top-work
an old apple tree to a new variety, knife sharpening and discussion
of all related subjects.


Sunday, March 4th: 9 am to 3.30 pm. Potluck lunch.

Pruning Apple trees.


Learn the principles of pruning & practice them on mature bearing
trees in a commercial biodynamic orchard.

You bring: Excellent clippers and pruning saw.

(We recommend Felco clippers # 2 and Felco folding saw # 60)

Bring also pictures of your own apple trees for some pruning hints.



3.30 pm – 4.30 pm

Introduction to biodynamic orchard management.

Grafting workshop: at 16 Summit Street in Philmont.

Pruning workshop: at Threshold Farm, Roxbury Road. (Dress
weather appropriate!)


Cost: $120 for both days, $75 for one day. Includes 5 root stocks and 
snacks.

orchardist. Together with his wife Hanna Bail, he operates Threshold
Farm, a mixed biodynamic Farm in Columbia County, NY.
